OMG I'm 30, play by ear and never learned how to read music, play scales, anything! It's holding me back and I'm sooooo frustrated because I cannot absorb information lately! I feel like a retard!

Tempo = Beats Per Minute
Beat is not equal to Tempo.
A beat is what gets one count, for instance in 6/8 time there are 6 beats per measure and an eighth note = 1 beat. In 4/4 there are 4 beats per measure and quarter notes are 1 beat each.
I think what you're trying to do here is great but try to present good information.
