I'm thinking of buying a vintage ice cream van and riding around with this playing over the speakers...maybe while dressed as the child catcher from chitty chitty bang bang...
haha. I heard this first when I was a kid (well I'm 18 now) and always thought it sounded like a creepy carnival. Now I know that it's meant to be that way.
Knowing only too albums thus far, The Good Son and Your Funeral (getting more albums this or next week though), this is definitely my favourite. A true masterpiece.
The musicians are: Nick Cave, obviously, Mick Harvey on xylophone, Warren Ellis on accordion, Blixa on guitar and vox, Conway Savage on keys, Thomas Wydler on drums, and Martin Casey on bass.
Haha it's so true, but I see that as a positive thing! This is possibly my favorite Bad Seeds song... I listened to it repeatedly walking around Berlin recently after watching Wings of Desire far too many times. What a piece of music...

I love Nick Cave's peformance in The Ship Song, The Mercy Seat & Straight To You. Also, when he sang with Kylie Minogue.. & PJ Harvey too, he was fantastic. But not this song! Here, he sounds like a preacher who went mad.
Beautiful version of one the most beautiful pieces of art ever made! This song is life, is beauty, is anger and love in all their complexity! Thanks for the upload!
I just did a video interview for Nick's new album reissues in London with Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard (the artists who have been directing Nick's recent music videos). I talked about this song and Red Right Hand for ages and how it reminded me of 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' by Ray Bradbury - My flesh still crawls when I think about it! The Carny is one of the most inventive pieces of contemporary music out there.
They remind me of the Doors, when they were in their wildest stage, which was the best for Them..(not that I'm saying Nick Cave, et. al., should imitate)...they put out a sound I attach to...I am listening closely to just this one song, ...what Lyric!!..
Hi!! I added this because this one is my favorite version. It disappeared from YouTube last year, so here it is again. This is my favorite version. Enjoy, all of you fellow freak and brute creations all packed up and on their way ... ~Allison

I'm glad he refused to be nominated for MTV best male artist 1996. Nick Cave doesn't need an award for his fans to know how good he is.

Nick Cave sounding a bit Tom waits or Tom Waits is sounding a bit like Nick Cave... confusing
Hirnlego999 1 year ago
@Hirnlego999 Actually, Nick Cave has said that Tom Waits is an inspiration of his, so there you go. :)

So? Tom waits does these types of songs too.
Its bible black, creates an eerie atmosphere of despair, the perfect setting for a good story and thus a song.
