i installed 3-way occupancy sensor switches in my stairway and they don't work.
they turn on when they want, and stay on. some times they shut off, sometimes they stay on for hours and hours. the first switch in the line does not work, but the second switch works. but the lights stay on. can you please help?
As far as I know, a three-way dimmer is just a three-way switch with a dimmer in the common wire. Just make sure that the un-used traveling wire is nutted or taped so that it can't cause trouble.
Actually, at the price of dimmers, why not just play it safe and use the correct two-pole one?
Wich one is the traveling wire is it the taped one? I had a 3 way left over and I needed to replace one so I thought I would use the one I have. The black wire would get hot and the non taped wire is the outgoing wire is that right? If you dont mind can you do a qiuck vid and awnser my questions?
@Electrotime a 3 way dimmer is wired differently than a normal dimmer the common is by its self on one end of a regular 3 way switch! on a 3 way dimmer the common is in the place of where a traveler would be on a regular 3 way! doesn't mean it is a traveler! that is just how it is! nothing different! white wires where OK to use as a hot when white not used as a neutral in the 2005 Nec! but now it is different! you should check the 2008 Nec! their is too much to explain in this comment!
@Electrotime to make a 3 way dimmer into a single pole dimmer all you have to do is buy a single pole dimmer, remove the 3 way switches from the circuit,
take the hot wire and splice it to the other black traveler, then from the other box where your 3 way dimmer was take the 2 blacks and connect them to the dimmer. roll your red conductors back in the box and your done!
The electrical code varies all over the place. Here in Toronto, the white wire can be used as a hot if it's tagged with a flag of black tape. This situation happens whenever a switch is at the end of a piece of wire, rather than in the middle of a run.
If the switch is in the wire that is going to the light from the breaker panel, then it's like you say, and the white wire gets nutted together. Things are different when the power comes right to the light, and then another wire leads to the switch. Then, you end up with two hot wires goint to the switch, and the white nees the black flag on it.

The white wire should not be on a 3 way switch.
