went there in 1995, you could see people in the buildings, it was freaky flying below the level of the buildings but very exciting, hong kong incidentally is arguably the best holiday destination i've ever been to.
kai tak was, ironically, a rather safe place to land as pilots were NEVER complacent and ALWAYS alert ... of course, a few exceptions proved the rule!
when i become a pilot i would have loved to land hear but all of the aove and people just got scared of coming so they ha to scrap the airport but by far the best airport in the world
Superbe...scary and completly nuts at the same time. I landed there when it was still open as a passanger and its realy as if you're going to crash in the city.
The Hong Kong "CheckerBoard" approach gets its name from the large checkerboard patterns on the hill the aircraft flies toward during the final approach segment.
The one at 1:08, DC-10 w/ red sun on the tail, white crane in the middle. The words on the the fuselage looked like a Tibetan/Indian twist on letters, if not those languages themselves.
this is because the airport was a military one before, so long as the city's developed quickly, it was converted to a commercial one, so it's at the center of the city
@ 0:54 and 0:57 you can clearly see that the turbofan engine was scrapping ground during landing..... Were those planes destroyed?

Used to live in HK when kai tak was the only airport.
My first landing there was with an AF747-400 shortly after a typhoon had passed on HK ! Better not be plane sick !
