The part she was playing, Deena, is supposed to be an unimpressive singer - Beyoncé had to underperform for the part. "Listen", written exclusively for the film, was different from the other songs Deena sang because it was solely for Deena, and full of the "personality", as Curtis would say, that her other songs were void of. She found "her own" voice, which is why the level of skill in "Listen" is so much better than in say "Dreamgirls".
