  • Best. Teacher. Ever.

  • 1:04 with transcribe audio on, go look, laughed for 5 minutes straight :D

  • Yes!!!

  • @guitarbridgecleaner MAB is a great teacher also. His instructional dvds are awesome, if you're at the level to learn No Boundaries! But he still has a lot of principles great for anyone. A lot of teachers in schools are shit and could learn teaching things from Gilbert and MAB etc ^_^

  • Great teaching, great guy, GOD ON GUITAR! It's hard to top Paul Gilbert man...

  • Great stuff, thx for sharing

  • "YES" 3:36. hahahaha

  • Always somebody posts that Paul is a great player, but they don't like his music, bla, bla. Are you deaf? Technical difficulties is freaking great, and don't tell me about Comfortably Numb. Silence Followed by a Deafening Roar (song) is one of the best guitar instrumentals, also The Gargoyle. If you don't bang your head to Viking Kong, you must like Justin Beaver. I can listen to Yngwie, MAB, most others for about five minutes, but I listen can to Paul Gilbert all of the time, and I do.

  • @nulife022 Some people just don't like guitar sounds, it takes a while for people to get used to guitar sounds, let alone guitar shredding.

People are different, some people don't like rock, some people call anything that's death metal rock and just rock, some people think Kesha, or anything that doesn't have rap is rock.

Honestly it's bad how little minded people are these days, but i'm not gonna generalize, because hopefully there are some people that listen to stuff regardless of genre.

  • yeah!:)

  • I like how he play some crazy shred lick and everyone is in awe and he's just like meh.

  • Paul is an amazing guitar teacher. It would be a blessing to get lessons from him.

  • "YES!", "yeeah"

    :')

  • If only I could even simply be in the same room as Paul. I'm sure everyone there can feel his godly-ness radiating from him!

  • i think hes right, i never really fell in love with PGs songs even though i love him as a guitar player

  • Oh Paul you god you.

  • plz I really wanna know how he is using that technique with picking and legato combine from 1:44-1:50 :D

  • @loljoje5 look up "Paul Gilbert 11 note pattern" :D

  • @loljoje5 it is the same as hammer-on and pull off, so in a tab for e.g on the A string where it would be 1,3,4, he would have pick 1 and 3 then hammer on to 4, after that pull off to 3 and 1 then repeat, if u still have questions feel free to ask :)

  • oh! I really wanna know how he is playing that kind of technique from 1:44-1:54 :D

  • @loljoje5 it's not that hard, just combine what he told in this lesson with his famous full picking lick and add another lick like he demonstrated in a sting skipping lick lesson...^^ it's easier than it seems and it makes you think that he's playing 1000notes

  • dude i saw him this year at NGW and it just kicked so much ass.....

  • great guitar player..exceptional attitude ! good clean musical nourishment

  • Paul needs to start his own youtube channel.

He's one of the half dozen players that still impresses me and holds my respect.

It would also be a great Q&A source and make a great alternative to the magazines kids buy that really teach us nothing.

10 years agao, Guitar World/Player magazine couldn't even properly step by step you through the basics of sweep picking. There we all were, playing Pantera, Metallica, Hendrix, Page etc. solos and they never exposed us to the TRUE shredders.

  • @JonDeth Paul already made a youtube channel 8).. its called paulvsgodzilla (check my page i subscribed to him), but he hasnt used it a lot yet cuz i guess hes busy atm in japan..

  • @JonDeth Ithink he started it's called paulvsgodzilla

  • 1:26 Epic kickassness...

  • The greatest of all time!! great player, great teacher=God! PG is God!

  • @jasonism123 Lol I liked how you arrived at the PG is God conclusion! could feel the energy!!! :D. PG is awesome!

  • I was there during this. It was so epic.

  • is this what the whole time at NGW is like or is there 1 on 1 lessons too??

  • @bucketzakkdimetconn There's one on one lessons (well, more like a group with a teacher). This was just the guest musician one night, after classes. You should go, NGW was so fun and taught me a lot.

  • This man is a brilliant teacher.

  • he is so amazing...

  • 3:32 holyshit!!!

    so damn clean

  • I like how he makes this fast and advanced stuff so simple and easy to understand unlike a lot of people. Plus he doesn't try to show off how fast he really is and how hes the greatest but actually shows the people how they can play just as fast as him with a little practice and time.

  • ive met him, and he is as modest as this !

towards the end that clean picking...i mean most people hide all that with effects. gilberto doesnt have anything to hide !

god ! and respect to van halen

  • lol @ 3:35 hes got such a cool sense of humor

  • He's the man!

  • He showed this picking excercise in Italy, too. xD

  • hes so modest wenever they clap he just seems so thankful, never gets big headed ,what a guy

  • @jstairway2heaven Paul is a guitar Samurai

  • @diamonddust22 you sound like Mr.Fastfinger :D

  • @panny14 lol

  • @jstairway2heaven And he really really loves just playing his guitar, learning new techniques and teachin others.

  • @jstairway2heaven That's true, he doesn't even flinch. :)

  • @jstairway2heaven He really is a total sweetheart of a guy.

I was lucky to have a free 30 minute lesson with him once and he is the most humble down to earth guy you'll ever meet.

The REALLY great ones always are.

  • I very Like this guy! I stole one of his licks and smashed it into my guitar solo on my upcoming tracks! hahaha He's brilliant!

  • At 3:32, that's an Yngwie lick, right? What song is it from again?

  • Maybe but, Paul used it for a song called Second Loudest Guitar In The World. It might be harmonic minor which is yngwie's preferred scale

  • The harmonic minor is the only scale that yngwie use! ajjaja

  • no it isnt get your facts right.

  • Nope, it's a straight A minor sextuplet run starting from the high F down to the low A.

  • it looks 1 part of the Trilogy Suite Op.5 of Yngwie, but it is different

  • They applaud him as a king, and every time he does or says something

  • WHERE IS THIS!?

  • "Paul Gilbert picking exercise shown at the National Guitar Workshop in Conn, 2008" lol

  • he plays that tapping better than van halen lol

  • @luxor7 right, exactly hahaha, I noticed that too.

  • @luxor7 He's a better guitarist than Eddie. While the music they both write is debatable on who's is better, Gilbert has it all. Tapping is the easiest and laziest way to sound fast. As a guitar player, it's easy for me to play Van Halen licks but I weep when you throw Paul's work in front of me and tell me to play it.

  • @MadLip78 and this stills means nothing. You see, why people like EVH loved Les Paul so much? Or Page? Not for the complexity of the licks or the difficulty you have while trying to play it. Music is NOT about technique. Technique is a requirement to START doing music. Music is something that come from inside, you know? Music is inspiration, creativity, expression. And, EVH or Les Paul or Page, could kill PG any day in any of this segments.

If technique were everything, Hendrix would be shit.

  • @Taikamya Yes it does mean something. I said Gilbert is a better guitarist, not necessarily musician. Most people who love EVH or Page haven't even picked up the fucking instrument and have no fucking clue about what it's like to play guitar. Yes, music is inspiration, creativity etc...I don't understand what you're fucking trying to tell me. You basically just reiterated and parroted my point back to me. Hendrix is shit technique wise but a brilliant musician. What's your fucking point?

  • @Taikamya u sounds like a newbie in guitar :) wekkekek every newbies act like u, if ur not newbie, then u ear need to be clean :) no famous guitarist can kill any guitarists in any segment u mentioned u jackass. hahahaha

  • @MadLip78 by the way. I'm NOT saying PG sucks or whatever. But just 'cause you play EVH licks easy and PG licks not that easy, that doesn't mean that PG is godlike or is god himself. There are IMHO 3 guitarrists that can use technique in PERFECTION. PG, JS and JP. And they're pretty good, excellent even. But comparing them to players who actually INVENTED part of what we know today by music, is childish. Is a total waste of time. Is two different worlds.

  • @Taikamya Childish? It's fucking fact. So you're telling me that EVH "invented" a pentatonic scale? EVH is a great musician but there are guitarists out there who would roast him technique wise. That's not a hard concept to grasp. I just stated a fact and you say I'm childish!? Fuck you asshole. And, if you can only recognize that there are 3, in your honest opinion, guitarists out there that can use technique to perfection, you should just stop commenting.

  • @MadLip78 I agree on what you say about Eddie and Paul dude!!!....but tapping can get pretty hard and demand a lot of work, so no its not always easy and lazy...go check out stanley Jordan...hope you enjoy his playing....thanks for the comment.

  • @luxor7 No doubt.

  • @luxor7 ok, vanhalen made the peice. thats like saying rodney mullens kickflips are worse than mike moes.. of course they are. but rodney mulled made the damn trick

  • He's such a great teacher.

  • great teacher !

  • it must be so annoying for paul that those people start yelling everytime he tries to explain something by showing an example

  • is he using a tsl? and a thd hotplate!

  • I was thinking the same thing myself.

  • he always uses Eruption as an example in his lessons and demos

  • the thing is, paul gilberts hammer ons and pull offs are so freaking hard, that they sound exactly like he's picking every single note...

  • Damn they wanna applause so bad! I've been thinking, every Paul Gilbert tab I've seen consist of almost 100% picking. No legato or ham/pull-off could someone explain that please?

  • bad tab. gilbert doesnt alternate pick everything and uses legato all the time

  • Soooo, the tabs are wrong. Fucking faggot

  • why the attitude...you asked someone to explain this and I explained it. The mentality of some people on youtube is absoluteley shocking.people ask for help and then cant accept that help without being a dick

  • I wasn't being a dick, I was being a Youtuber

  • so you ask someone to explain something then call them a fucking faggot...yeah my bad..perfectly cool behaviour

  • I just woke up! I never do such things

  • I normally do the same exercise like what gilbert does and its smooth as ever but here's the weird part, or I find it weird compared to other guitar players. When it comes to 3 note per0string picking, I alternate pick all the notes on the first 3 notes then when I move down to the next string, instead of up-pciking, I pick downwards. Does anyone else do that?

  • hes coming to guitarworkshopplus in Vancover. Lucky BC bastards!!

  • This guy is a genious.

  • i cant wait im gonna see him at ngw this year!

  • fuck man he plays eruption better than EVH could do it now! sick individual. and his playing hasn't washed up like a lot of the early guitar gods, he's sharper and more diverse than ever.

  • Comment removed

  • agreed!♪♫♪♫♪

  • paul is one ofvery very few people who keep getting better and better and better usually professionals, wether it may be sports players or musicians or actors, hit their peak and then start to fade away but paul has yet to peak he just keeps pushing his possabilities and creativity further than ever

  • fucking paul gilbert is the best guru ever

  • which PG DVD would you guys recommend for beginner shred?

  • Any

  • damn the way he teaches is so simple but so genious

  • yah!! he's the Einstein of all the guitarists. LOL

  • i know! he can take the simplest most basic riffs and licks and make an intense and amazing song, and he can also do vice versa and boil something incredibably complex down to something super simple and use it or explain it. which is why hes such a great teacher

  • i agree!♪♫♪♫♪

  • Where does PG usually conduct his workshops?

  • im not so sure. im pretty sure a workshop is about the same thing as a clinic though correct me if im wrong(its just more teaching and less show) but he tours all over to lots of different countries to do clinics and play so check his website but idk what hes got coming up with the whole mr big reunion and all.

  • In space, didn't you see his astronaut gear?

  • I love his humor with his explanations of techniques. Great teaching knowledge.

  • Ive tried doing what he's doing when he moves his left hand away and just picks, but my technique goes out the window.

    This man is a god.

  • Awesome! Paul Gilbert just kicks ass!!

  • lol, paul vanhalen

  • I have been struggling with speed for over 20 years - and Paul Gilberts instruction vids/clip bring so much to light for a rhythm guy like me.

This is where most top players drop the ball - they tell you nothing about "how to put it together" or how they came to major break throughs/realization in their own playing

    great lesson

  • he's a very good teacher. i like how he breaks down everything to the most basic elements so it's not overwhelming. man he's good

  • yea most guys just show u the picking without playing it at different tempos, he makes the core elements stand out because to spice it up u need that 3rd legato note and paul is trying to shower people how its does properly up to speed.

  • My goodness. This guy is amazing.

Anyone got any advice for an intermediate (maybe early advanced) guitar player on string skipping picking? It's been holding me up for years now. I can pick pretty fast and sweep and shit, but I can't get the string skipping down. I'm sick of my fretting hand being twice as fast as my picking hand when it comes to arpeggios and shit.

I've been practicing the Paganini thing Steve Vai does in Crossroads for years, but I'm still lacking on the picking part.

  • check out theis thing called paul gilbert string skipping lesson,he breaks it down step by step

  • youre funny as hell

  • Oh man. I paused it at 3:36. Nice face Paul.. Nice face.

  • hahahahahaha the dude at 3:37 YESSS

  • I was there. Sick.

  • I want more of this :p

  • paul plays eddie's lick better then him

  • LOL Paul's expression at 3:37. He didn't really expect an applause for that.

  • what the fuck that unpatient audience every time applaude! wait men!

by the way, cool video! thx!

  • I was in that audience. It wasn't that, it was because everyone worshipped Paul so much that they applauded everything he did.

  • Awesome stuff!
