Those troops were under a UN mandate, an internationally agreed mandate (by the whole world) to keep the peace but not enforce it (i.e. actually use their weapons). At that point it could have been anyone, Americans, Russians, and it would have still been a failure

@karlkarlkarl1234 The reason the Peacekeepers could do nothing is because they were only 2,500 strong against tens of thousand maybe hundred of thousands of Hutu extremist they were hopelessly outnumbered but even then they were still ordered to not even defend themselves numerous times which lead to the deaths of 10 Belgian peacekeepers. The U.N is run by politicians rather than leaders which is why I hate the U.N not necessarily the peacekeepers but the U.N as an organisation can kiss my ass.

The Tutsis begging for help (around 4:16) is the most awful thing I have ever seen. The Belgian reporter summed up the nature of the events in one line: "We left-- for the white people, it's over...but hell starts for them [the Tutsis)."

Actually, the French weren't there. Rwanda was a former Belgian colony. French is one of the official languages of Belgium and happened to be the language spoken by some of the first Belgians who settled in Rwanda :)

To be honest there wasn't really anything any citizen there could do. The Tutsi were being slaughtered by the Hutu, and since the information of the situation was skewed nobody knew what was really happening.

Im sorry - why didn't they take those people with them? I realise they were under orders not to, but even I, a pretty racist bastard would have done so knowing those people were to die. They could have moved as a group up the road as far as they could get anyway - these guys with machetes at the door are not going to fight a group of machine gun carrying, well trained Western soldiers. If you would have been there you would have done what officers expect a good soldier to do, followed your orders.

Sometimes I get a bit sick of people always blaming whites for all evil. Look at Rwanda, al the victims of gang/ghetto violence across the globe, criminality, as much blacks are fault as whites. Europe at least help, did what we could. We didn't start the war, they start trouble and expect others to solve this difficult poliical issue. We always help Africa, support and get nothing back. If Africa once installed good non corrupt governemnt then they could solve their on problem. Sorry for rant.

First off, some European UN workers did not try to intervene , they let innocent Tutsi's and Huti's die. Second off the Southern Hemisphere pays for the Northern living standard. Sub Saharan Africa pays over 25 000 dollars a minute to Northern creditors. Plus the unbeliveable amounts of natural resources. By the way not all of Africa is fucked up. There are very prosperous nations also. So next time you rant about Europeans always helping Africans, get your facts straight

And after you read about it and you don't believe it was "WHITE PEOPLE", aka Germany and Belgium's doing, I will rest my case. Are Rwandans responsible also absolutely, at no point of time did i say they weren't. That may be true, but the blame here lies with the world. Everyone messed this war up, Americans, Canadians, Belgians, the UN, Rwandians, British...etc. Everyone could have done more, the point is NOBODY did enough. Nobody.
The topic here should be what to do so this never happends again. The topic should be sympathy for what these people went through. You cant blame other countries/organisations without blamming your own as well.

In my opinion those who can watch this documentary on this tragedy, and feel other than sympathetic to those who lost thier lives in the most brutal way are the same people who are able to commit crimes like these. The same people who hold very little regard for human life no matter what ethnicity, race, religion etc.
