Hi I have a question. Ive heard you talk about EMP in the past, and Faraday cages. If an EMP were to occur, due to a solar flare or some kind of power station malfunction, would that render the solar system useless. If so how might you protect against this? Disconection from the grid, would that be enough, or would it be feasable to surround the house in somekind of makeshift Faraday cage? Good luck from the UK.
The electrican who wired the original distribution house panel took pride in their worksmanship. Not often do you find a clean installtion like that.
Your new work also looks great. Finally, someone who uses blank off plates in the open breaker slots. Most just run elect tape which sure violates the NEC
Great video my Friend... That is very cool that you had the chance to setup a hybrid system. I am getting ready to double my PV output to 2.6 KW.. The grid tie with battery backup is the best part. The less you cycle your battery bank the more life you get. Thanks for sharing as always...
What is the payback period and maintenance costs of the system including the battery bank? The idea of solar is great but the cost even with incentives is really high per kwh of electricity. If the break even point is 15+ years it's worn out before it is paid for. I'm considering solar for charging batteries and essentials like water, security system, and essential emergency lighting but for everything else it seems that generators and fuel storage are still more cost effective.
There's more & more of this going on in my area. The local city hall just did an install and the govt paid 40%. A youtuber called mr2tuff made a clever homemade system with solar/batteries, totally emp/cme proof. check it out
I would love to have a small backup system for a chest freezer and my well pump (which is 220, for a deep well pump). No need for all the automatic switching, I could throw some switches or switch plugs. Here in N. AZ we have 320 days of sun, so solar works great. That would give me water and cold food preservation, which would be great in a grid down scenario. The solar guys I talked to out here said the 220 well pump is expensive to solve with solar. Any thoughts?
Hi I just ordered and got a Powerhub 1800 have not set it up yet, wish I had seen this first but I'm sure the cost was more. My unit has 2 -110 watts panles and 2 12v 220Ah batteries. Not sure what it will run but can add panles and batteries. Any good tips, and wish you were here. Southern Grandmaw
All the conduits and equiptment are straight, level and strapped. This installation is a testament to the conscientiousness of your work ethics. A professional job all the way Thank you for sharing.
I've always heard that batteries must not be put in a closed cabinet because they off-gas hydrogen, which as you know is highly volatile and explosive. Why is this one featuring a cabinet and indoors to boot?
How are you venting that battery cabinet? Venting is important because when you're charging those batteries, one of the "waste" products is hydrogen gas.
Scott do you have any off gassing concerns from the battery banks? is there some type of ventilation system to vent gasses from the charging batteries?
@NWOIS666 although I wont take you up on your offer, I must say your kind and generous response has just made my day and helped restore my faith in people, I sincerely thank you. folks like yourself will make a shtf senario less ugly...
@blossombogart2 I can't afford it either. It is a luxury item that is not necessary to make it. It was done for a retired couple in their 70s. They just want to survive in style! Thanks for watching!
@mikemorrison281 Don't feel too bad, I think most all of us are in the same boat. I have been doing what I can to get ready. Do what you can, when ever you can.
is the new panel a "sub" panel from the main? I'm only asking because I saw your neutral bar bonding jumper installed. I sure would not think that new panel is solar/battery powered only?
@freakshow2000 the panel is solar/battery powered primarily. The inverter in setup to power that panel by battery or grid or generator etc. It is a very flexible system. Thanks for watching!
Did you lose your Load Control and Half Priced Water Heating discounts from Duke Power when you installed solar? "Or did you decide "the less said the better?" Losing those discounts can add 20% to the power bill... =OUCH!!!
IMO, having solar lowers grid demand and the utility ought to credit homeowners w/ solar systems for grid stability.
I worry about the disconnects being outside where other people would have access. Is there a reason they are outside and not inside? Was just thinking OPSEC.
@engineer775@ludeluver if you're not selling power back to the grid do you even need a disconnect for the power company? I can understand for personal need/reasons needing to disconnect but why does the power company get a say? This is your own equipment, right?
Very nice. Surprised that they did not go with Trojan L16RE or equivalent in Surette. IMHO, the higher cost of the L16 is justified and offset by the much longer long life span of that battery, especially during a period of high or hyper inflation.
how long will it take for that to pencil out, if its only 25% of their power, and that system had to cost over 25K, if it is for prepping and being off the grid then that is fine, but if it for saving money , it wont happen.
You're always playing with either water or electricity... is that a wise combination? LOL That's an awesome job you're doing, installing that system. Impressive. Thanks for finding the time to put it on video and share it with us.
Are those critical circuits totally isolated from the grid? Or are they breaker bypassed to the solar system and can be put on the grid if needed? Great work!!
You mentioned the tax credits so that means the system must be grid tied, is that correct? Then how does one do the battery back up and switch over to charge batteries for a back-up system? Is that what you meant by the Zantrex inverter charger?
This is what I have been wanting to do but the only solar installer in my area keeps trying to talk me out of it. I'm looking at a 8kW, looks like the one you installed is just shy of a 3kW.
Nice! Really top of the line stuff. Great videos they get me to think and learn a lot. Wife and I are going to install a new wood stove. You have any thoughts about a soapstone verses cast iron?
I was wanting to know what do I need to have? solar panel thru the tv I am watching

The single inverter and single charge controller make this a bad system from a TEOTWAWKI point of view. Redundancy in excess is your friend.

Is the battery box ventilated?
Otherwise explosive gasses will build up in there.
Great setup
