bmw x3 is an SAV not SUV. It is not designed for this kind of stuff, it is built for roads not for crossing rivers. If you want an off road car buy one that is designed for this kind of adventure, like a professional off-roader, with higher ground clearance and off-road tires. why ruin such a fine bmw on some stupid rocks? it really makes no sense.
it would be really awesome if bmw would make real 4x4's more like touareg, i really love the x3 for it's engine (3.0sd) , comfort , gearbox and 4x4 system , i now own a e39 530d touring but i test drived an x3 and i think this would be my next car.
The problem it's you cannot make a really good road car and have the articulation good also for the offroad. Maybe on future there will be a system to unlock the articulation for offroad.
This car are more about BMW brand or luxury high end price, they are no design for offroad. For offroad get the Discovey, Hummer or car with high wheel profile, not this sedan cars with offroad body

most suv can do light offroading with right tires and some type 4x4lock and at least 8in ground height

DId you turn DSC on? When you get stuck, Its best to turn DSC off.

i went to off road with my x3 today too
didnt get stuck or anything.
the best part was where i could drive up to 40mph at those gravel with out sliding much even when i was turning handle fast to avoid rocks.
i think its a great car to use as city/ moderate off road

it s a pitty bmw not wanting to make real 4x4 vehicles.... anyway very brave for a car with the wheel articulation of a skateboard
must recognize 4wd system in bimmers are good
