“The world doesn’t disappear when you close your eyes, does it? My actions still have meaning, even if I can’t remember them. My wife deserves vengeance, and it doesn’t make any difference whether I know about it.”
“Do I lie to myself to be happy? In your case, Teddy... yes, I will.” What alternative did Lenny have to keep Teddy from continually using him as a killing machine?
@Edwardvantec I believe that was after his wife was raped and he killed the real John G, but before his wife died. The implication is that he had the original tattoo erased. I somehow doubt it was a fantasy.
@keepcompletecontrol We never really know. Can we believe Teddy? It's difficult to say. Part of the movie is the unsolvable parts of the mystery. Just like Lenny, we have no way of knowing for sure what is true
@keepcompletecontrol Yes, that is what the movie seems to imply. In fact, there is a scene in which Leonard tells how memory is unreliable. Eyewitness testimony is prone to error. He has conditioned himself to remember that Sammy Jankis was the one who accidentally killed his wife.
@keepcompletecontrol No, just no. The wife and tattoo thing is a fantasy that he sees when he closes his eyes. He is not confused at all in fact. The fantasy represents everything he wants, but since his wife is dead, he can't get her back.
The "I've done it" tattoo signals that he thinks he can get his wife back if he catches the killer. Once he figures out he's already caught the killer and his wife isn't back he decides to return to the idea that the killer is still out there. At least now he still has something to live for. If he ever knows that he is done, his life will become meaningless.
I HATE this movie. I hated it back in 2000 when I saw it the first time and I thought I´d give it another try here 11 yrs later, to see if I had to change my opinion. Unfortunately I still hate the movie. Maybe its just because I hate movies, where you have to keep your brain working on 110% all the time-or maybe its just because I´m stupid. I just think the way they made the "plot" destroys the movie. And yes...I am aware, that the B/W sequences are chronological and the color ones are reverse.
I have to believe in a world outside my own mind. I have to believe that my actions still have meaning, even if I can't remember them. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world's still there. Do I believe the world's still there? Is it still out there?... Yeah. We all need mirrors to remind ourselves who we are. I'm no different... Now, where was I?
@Blemo23 i wouldn't call him poor teddy by any means...it was not like he was innocent...he was 'helping' lenny but he was serving his own interests at the same time...in fact i don't believe he cared about lenny, but he found his condition useful, just like natalie...
This ending is cool....whenever I lose motivation about something I watch this ending....I like Guy's resolve to have a purpose in the world no matter who it effects
This isn't the end, it's actually the beginning of the movie. He is a different person from this point one, which allows him to finally shed the obstacle (ie Teddy) that causes him to make the same mistakes without learning. Lenny, finally turns quantitative repetition into something qualitatively different. Repetition is in reality the only way anybody learns. Making the same mistakes is a part of that. But if we don't learn from the past, we're destined to repeat it, trapped like Lenny.
Finally saw "Memento" tonight...WOW! Such an amazing way of story telling!! Christopher Nolan is no doubt one of THE BEST Writer/Director of our generation. He's my BIGGEST INSPIRATION for wanting to make movies telling mind bending stories.
Read my short story I wrote called "Thank You" it's this style of story telling I just LOVE doing....and hopefully later film.
So what nataly character was in the movie why again?
@D1am0nd77 he made up the part " don't believe his lies and copied his licenses plate" and that would eventually lead to him killing teddy. So no, he was not the one who raped and murdered his wife.
@Nerevar1990 Err, I was under the impression that John G was some low life who he did kill with the help of Teddy (also a John G.) Then he killed Jimmy G....then finally Teddy himself. Maybe I haven't seen it in a while, not too big of deal.
@R1OT4L1FE who was it then? there are a few hints throughout the film that indicate lenny might be doing what he accused sammy jenkins of doing.. basically lying about memory loss, though i don't think that is how memento is suppose to be perceived. 'noob' haha why are you so confrontational? take it easy
@davemcconn I always thought that was to show how clouded and mixed up his memories are. It's almost as if he lied to himself to create this mystery, as Teddy suggests.
@davemcconn because his wife never died from the rape, she survived HE was the one who killed her, HE is sammy jenkis, DID YOU NOT WATCH THE MOVIE??!?!?
@Snoopies622 no, because he would have gotten that tattoo if his wife got killed and he got revenge. right? now in the clip you see he is with his wife. therefore your statement is invalid.
@Sven2Perroy His wife survived the attack but he wanted revenge anyway - just for attacking her. After he got his revenge and then unknowingly killed her with the shot later on, he added the imaginary feature that it was the initial attack that killed her, to make it all simpler and more noble.
I think it's more the middle at the end. The middle part of the plot is shown at the end. Black/White scenes are chronological and color scenes are reversed chronological and they meet in the middle in this scene.
Love the backwards scenes, it gives the confusion of not knowing what happened before. Just like Leonard has.
@90sambabam2 the title basically summarizes Nolan's style -- the beginning was only revealed at the end, and the whole movie was shown backwards in sequence, so we'd learn more about the protagonist and others as the movie progresses, and understanding the story as a whole, only at the end!
@xxmetioqurexx Ohh don't worry about it. I can't believe they are practically obsolete. I don't really like the digital cams now. I know to take instant pictures literally for a memento lol
Easily the BEST movie of the year! Great acting & story telling all around and a great soundtrack too! I rate this movie 10 Stars! walks the same ground as Fight Club!
@ondra159 the ending scene explains the whole movie. Lenny killed Teddy because he was "John G", but he wasn't the guy who attacked him and his wife. At the end of the movie, we find out that Lenny made all of the "clues" for himself to find a "John G" to fit the scheme, so his life would have purpose. The obsession with finding John G, gave him a reason to live, despite his condition. Even though he forgets everything that happens, he'd changes the story so he could have a purpose in life
I made a friend watch this recently, they said "the ending's just like Shutter Island which was better than this'...i had to refrain myself from punching them in the face...hard.
@the20hunk yeah that's true, it is a matter of personal preferance. I just think it's unfair to compare two films like Memento and Shutter Island..and considering that Memento was made a decade earlier and on a much smaller budget, it should recieve more praise..but I understand what you're saying as well.
this movie was so confusing, by the time it got to the end, i forgot lenny killed teddy, and was sam jankis actually leonard? or did teddy just say that to confuse him?
@markdm166 aha good question that's what makes the movie so great... unlike inception i think that this one really was made to have an answer. My thinkign is that Sammy Jenkis is Leonard cuz in one scene in the hospital in black in white for liek a second jenkis's face flashes into Leonard, also there was some evidence Leonard's wife was diabetic and diliberately hiding things from his mind to he can keep looking for a "killer"
@chicksdigsme Ghajni definitely has the same theme but its much different from this movie , Ghajni is much simple and easy to understand ... and story was different too.....
Undeniably a landmark film for showing the fragility and importance of memory, a vital function to the human mind and soul like never before. Life almost entirely depends on what we had experienced in the past to keep us going through the present which will determine our future. This explores a man who is stuck permanently with old thoughts, disconnected from the world trying to connect, give him a ultimate purpose to his life to keep going. Aren't we all like that more or less?
i suffered a severe concussion a while back (fell and hit the back of my head, apparently where your memories are stored) and suffered from short-term memory loss. pearce's portrayl of this condition is so accurate it's almost eerie.
you suddenly snap 'awake' and realise something's gone horribly wrong. time has suddenly jumped forward, the location has changed and you're pretty much wrapped in a state of disorientation, hysteria and paranoia. then the cycle repeats.

@nothingness36 the 2 directors i will go to the theater to see there movie:christopher nolan, quentin tarentino any other directors need to prove thamselvs on dvd than i will go see taht director in the theators
@Simon0 I've just seen this movie and I think he had this assertive memory. I believe he was Sammy Jenkins and he did not accept the fact his wife died because of him. He prefered to believe that she was raped and murdered and he also mentions that his motivation in life was to find the 'murderer' and kill him. That's what i deduced anyway. xD
i didn't like the party where he lost his memory. i thought that was too unrealistic. so, overall: a boring and standard movie of a guy going on a killing spree. i thought falling down with michael douglas was waaaay better. at least that one had some intelligent story writing and a protagonist whom you could relate to
@Blobsterilla I can't tell you that you're wrong about the film being boring-- its your own opinion. BUT.... The memory thing is a real condition. It was actually portrayed very realistically and respectfully and is one of the reasons why the film is admired.
if you ask me, leonard was an escaped mental patient. why do i say this? try playing the scene that shows sammy jenkins in the mental institution over and over again. if you look very closely, sammy's face changes to leonard's face for a brief second.
"Inception" is a movie bordering to shitty. You can't see the plot because of all the obvious plot holes. It is lacking imagination. CGI is no substitute for philosophical depth.
If you make a movie in the mindfuck genre you have some serious competition, like "Jacob's Ladder", "Watz with Bashir", "99 Franc", "Waking Life", "Open your Eyes". "Inception" can't compete. No way.
I watched the film when it came into the cinemas, so I don't remember that much, but from what I remember Lenny was a self-righteous fuck who lied to himself in order to get the right emotional rewards. He knew that Teddy wasn't the killer of his wife but framed him so that he would kill him later. Teddy was a shady but overall painfully truthful figure. Lenny's wife was either diabetic and killed herself or was actually killed by the unknown rapist.
No, rather you are what is called a FANBOY and you think that everyone who is not a FANBOY is a TROLL, but it's just too bad that WORDS have DEFINITIONS, DUMBFUCK!!!
"I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world's still there."
This movie is hauntingly amazing. It's my #1 movie, followed by "ink" from Jamin Winans. It's an amazing story, amazingly directed .. it's just everything I would be looking for in a movie.
this movie inspired me cuz it relates to me kinda. I have ADD so i also have short term memory problems. it made wanna take notes and make a system for my....condition.

While Cobb is introducing shared dreaming to Ariadne in Inception, one of his quotes is, "Never recreate from your memories, always imagine new places".
I immediately thought of Memento when he said that, because that describes Lenny's condition.

I agree except I want to add Wes Anderson and David Lynch to that.
Nolan, Scorsese, Anderson and Lynch. Must better, if you'll excuse the intrusion.

so his wife didnt die and she had diabeties is that right? At 1:59 his tattoo said 'ive done it'. at what point in the story does this happen.
was SAmmy Jenkis real or was Leonard confused and actually there was no Sammy Jenkis and Sammy was him or something.
Can someone answer these! thanks.
Simon0 1 year ago
@Simon0 I've just seen this movie and I think he had this assertive memory. I believe he was Sammy Jenkins and he did not accept the fact his wife died because of him. He prefered to believe that she was raped and murdered and he also mentions that his motivation in life was to find the 'murderer' and kill him. That's what i deduced anyway. xD
MetallicSisters 1 year ago
@MetallicSisters but there was an attack on him and his wife right? but his wife didnt die from it..

@Simon0 Yeah she didn't die but he lost his mind xD

@nothingness36 Well then don't complain that "movies today" aren't made with much thought. They were crappy movies as well back in 2000. :|

i didn't like the party where he lost his memory. i thought that was too unrealistic. so, overall: a boring and standard movie of a guy going on a killing spree. i thought falling down with michael douglas was waaaay better. at least that one had some intelligent story writing and a protagonist whom you could relate to
Blobsterilla 1 year ago

No way.

@trakkaton why did lenny kill teddy and who killed his wife?
chikineader 1 year ago
@chikineader

This movie is hauntingly amazing. It's my #1 movie, followed by "ink" from Jamin Winans. It's an amazing story, amazingly directed .. it's just everything I would be looking for in a movie.

ONE OF THE BEST FILMS EVER

Undeniably a landmark film for showing the fragility and importance of memory, a vital function to the human mind and soul like never before. Life almost entirely depends on what we had experienced in the past to keep us going through the present which will determine our future. This explores a man who is stuck permanently with old thoughts, disconnected from the world trying to connect, give him a ultimate purpose to his life to keep going. Aren't we all like that more or less?

Love this movie! The ending was great "Now, where was I?" I love that.
Brilliant and very well written thriller, epic movie. Similar to Inception, I think that its just a little bit better than this.

While Cobb is introducing shared dreaming to Ariadne in Inception, one of his quotes is, "Never recreate from your memories, always imagine new places".
I immediately thought of Memento when he said that, because that describes Lenny's condition.
