It's all about songwriting and inspiration. Anybody can play clean and note for note if he practices enough. Love Jimmy for the good performances and the bad.
Kudos to Page for being strung out then, cos the song would've totally sucked without him,Clapton never adjusted his microphone and Beck dropped his guitar pick during this song.Although somehow it all worked out!
Haisey Jimmy Page was never inspired by the Beatles nor would ever try to copy the Beatles music! He simply said they made some nice statements.Jimmy Page is the best!!!!!But George is (something)also!
Jimmy's putting a lot more effort into his playing than the others and he doesn't around like a statue. He's having a good time playing and the audience can feel it.
Jimmy's solo was like a shot of adrenalin. The Jimmy haters are obsessed with playing every fucking note with a sterlized and manicured finger. There are thousands of players who can play ultra-clean. Someone like Jimmy with real feel is a lot more seldom encountered.
@Reggie1971 The problem with page is not hes unclean style. Its his 'not-going-nowhere' shapes. He doenst have idea of what is a guitar phrase, he just plays randomly and SOMETIMES he gots some cool parts, but most of the time he just gots a very inestable playing where you can't here a clue of what hes trying to say.
@gre1990 what??!!you must be an idiot-"he doesnt have idea of whats a guitar phrase?"I catch hell for criticizing Page occasionally-but usually its cos he dresses funny-or he stole a bunch of stuff and didnt credit anyone, and I'm still trying to find out WHERE he stole the "Rain Song" from-they stole so much- but I have rarely heard an assinine comment such as this-he was on 60to 80% of all studio recordings in london for the whole 60's!how can he not know what a "Guitar Phrase "is-PLEASE!!!!
@gre1990 Its funny you call that a problem when I would call it a plus. I allways used to say Clapton was a "safe" guitar player and Beck was to concerned with getting it 100% right.
If page pulled off 70% of what he was trying to do, it would still sound better than both Clapton and Beck. Sorry but Page was all heart.
@Reggie1971 that is one of the best comments about jimmy i have heard im pissed aff with these frealks who think he cant play it not what you play it is what you write that counts the rain song i mean that is a fucking masterpeice half these so called great guitar players have never being able to write like that
@Reggie1971 You are absolutely CORRECT. Jimmy Page knows how to get that tone ooozing out of the wood. Keeps the effects transparent and you can hear that WOOD.
Are we watching the same video? Page looked, and sounded, like he had a score to settle; who's the best guitarist? His solos did nothing to serve the song, just manic showing off. And Im a big fan of Jimmy!!!!
Every time Jimmy Page takes a solo, I just smile and laugh out of sheer happiness. He's so awesome, random, innovative, competitive and killer, all at the same time.
THis one of the most 'coherent' and nice sounding jams I've seen for so many instruments. Usually when starstudded jams happen it is a big like grandstanding and diminishes into a mush. but this...let me ask, could it be that at heart they was having a rockin' hoedown? cuz they rocked dat juke joint like a country barrel house. And Clapton looks so happy, nice post!
Turn the Dolby off on this recording, please.. It's muffling the sound way too much. I prefer the tape noise. God Dolby and rock and roll don't mix. Thxs.
It's great to see such great musicians all together and from England too. As I readily identify with these guys being of the same age group and being brought up in England in the 60's when they pretty well all started out, there was a real feeling of excitement in the music scene then. Good to see Andy Feather Low and Steve Winwood in the line up too. Long may it continue.
@TL250Rider That guitar is NOT solid rosewood. You're getting Page's Tele confused with George Harrison's solid rosewood telecaster, seen in the Get Back video. Jimmy's tele is painted, you don't paint rosewood (unless you're stupid).
Page's Telecaster does have something that makes it unique, other than Page being its owner. It has a custom installed B-Bender, which you see Page use a lot (anytime he 'pulls' on the upper part of the guitar strap, that's him bending notes with the b-bender).
What a bunch of BS you are spewing here. Clearly you just hate Page. There is no reason to bash him here even though I have seen many examples of him bombing on stage. Not here. Give the man some credit though when he is clearly tearing the other two a new arse hole.
Anyone watching this video can see and hear for himself or herself how badly a nervous, shaky Page overplays compared to a cool, calm, confident Jeff Beck or Eric Clapton.
Page is so bad that he needs effects to mask his sloppy playing.
After Page shows he can't play, Clapton looks to Beck (@2:00) with a smirk.
You are a funny little guys aren't you. I've seen you on other Zep sites dissing Page. Clearly this is for your own amusement. That being said, this is obviously the lowest point in Page's career. His Rock n Roll excess in the late 70's greatly effected his playing. Still, in THIS particular video he rips it up. Yes his tone is heavier, but he is a heavier guitarist than the other 2 anyway, and it spices up what is an otherwise dull performance by Clapton and Beck.
while Vaughan is definitely a good blues player, so is Clapton in every sense, great vibe, great articulation, just a good player. Not much of a Beck fan myself, but he's a good player. And Page? A good electric player, and a much better acoustic player, i don't think your qualified to say which guitarist are "overhyped," you seem to lack some knowledge of the instrument or something, just something

Is that Kenney Jones on drums along with Charlie Watts? Love the 3 guitar greats going at it...'tho Clapton & Page are not very healthy here. At least they survived when so many didn't make it

Is Clapton playing the 1956 sunburst Stratocaster that became known as the "world's most expensive guitar" when it sold for $450,000 on June 24, 1999?
I feel like it took Page a long time to recover, he was horrible all throughout the '80s and didn't really pick it up again until he started touring with Plant.
I say bring all these guys back together again and have a tour. Just play really good blues and rock. It would be a war against rap tour. Add John Paul Jones.
If Zeppelin is planning on finding a singer when they tour why not use the guy from the Black Crowes. Page used to play for them so he must not hate them.
Andy Fairweather -Low is always under the radar, but to be perfectly honest is one helluva a musician. He is always Claptons backup and many other artists. He is just as capable as Clapton, Page and Beck without the name recognition.
Yeh, Jimmy owns this for sure. Not that Erics and Jeffs solos were not good but the echoplex and Jimmys sense for the right notes and phrasing for the song shine.
If my eyes don't decieve me it's Clapton, Page, Beck...with Kenney Jones, Charlie Watts, Ray Cooper (?), Steve Winwood, Bill Wyman, Andy Fairweather-Low (?), and I don't know who the pianist is. Anybody got any clues?

Page "rips it up"?
Masking horrible play with sound effects hardly qualifies as ripping it up.
Clapton, Beck and Page -- all have been overhyped.
Stevie Ray Vaughn showed the world that Clapton faked his way as a "blues guitarist".
Beck? I wouldn't let him fix my car.
Yet, Page is the most overhyped guitarist in rock history.
And Page is a song thief! Luckily, courts exist which forced Page the hack to make good on his song stealing.
TruthAxe 1 year ago

Is that Kenney Jones on drums along with Charlie Watts? Love the 3 guitar greats going at it...'tho Clapton & Page are not very healthy here. At least they survived when so many didn't make it
rocktenniscat 1 year ago
great personalities, after beck last 16 bars of finger picking triplets, Page try to emulate that with the pick, unable to acomplish on time and grovee, anyway hes A MASTER!

Dude, Jimmy totally tore the fuck out of his solos. If I were Eric or Jeff I'd feel upstaged.

clapton's slide was good, but if they had derek trucks here to do the slide stuff, that would've been cool. but i think he was 4 when this concert happened...

Is Clapton playing the 1956 sunburst Stratocaster that became known as the "world's most expensive guitar" when it sold for $450,000 on June 24, 1999?
PinkPrism008 2 years ago
59 and 58 Jimmy Page´s Les Pauls Guitars and EDS Double neck , are the most expansive value guitars estimate today... milion and milion dolars.

I feel like it took Page a long time to recover, he was horrible all throughout the '80s and didn't really pick it up again until he started touring with Plant.
Al112987 2 years ago
I say bring all these guys back together again and have a tour. Just play really good blues and rock. It would be a war against rap tour. Add John Paul Jones.

Who is the bass player?
Rzlo 2 years ago
Bill Wyman - played with a moderately successful group called the Rolling Stones - you might have heard of them...
Good to see Charlie Watts smile at 1:30.
hrothgleas 2 years ago 6
Well, I guess that shows how little I have listened to The Rolling Stones ;)
Thanks for your answer

Wow, Page is looking so much better than he did at Knebworth. Great performance!

Also, Bill Wyman is there and he looks handsome _ a very rare moment concerningo to Wyman.

If Zeppelin is planning on finding a singer when they tour why not use the guy from the Black Crowes. Page used to play for them so he must not hate them.

Page sounds sloppy compared to Clapton.
HotasL 2 years ago
page is just havin fun/always plays from feeling not technic / dont think for a second that its a " flaw "
z1inspector 2 years ago
Clapton is definitely by far the better pure blues player than beck or page, but Page and Beck made the blues and rock more progressive and modern.
johngmcgowan 2 years ago 2
Pete Townshend is a much better song writer than guitarist. But nevertheless, he is still a very capable guitar player.
johngmcgowan 2 years ago
Bill Wyman is the F***** coolest!!
johngmcgowan 2 years ago
Andy Fairweather -Low is always under the radar, but to be perfectly honest is one helluva a musician. He is always Claptons backup and many other artists. He is just as capable as Clapton, Page and Beck without the name recognition.

Yeh, Jimmy owns this for sure. Not that Erics and Jeffs solos were not good but the echoplex and Jimmys sense for the right notes and phrasing for the song shine.
marcusdolby1 3 years ago 2
Eric is playing slide, open tuning doesn't give him so much scope for soloing.
GunrunnerUK 2 years ago
What's the full line up then?
If my eyes don't decieve me it's Clapton, Page, Beck...with Kenney Jones, Charlie Watts, Ray Cooper (?), Steve Winwood, Bill Wyman, Andy Fairweather-Low (?), and I don't know who the pianist is. Anybody got any clues?
burnsybaby1987 3 years ago
I agree with everyone you posted - dunno the keyboard player, either.
