'Doom Metal' was just some silly term invented by some semi-illiterate rock journalist in the '80s. For those of us who were teenagers at the time, bands like St Vitus were seen simply as honorable continuations of the tradition started by Blue Cheer, Sabbath, Budgie, Zeppelin, Heep, Purple, etc. The media at the time simply needed to differentiate the new groups from the old ones. As a result, they would have us believe there are about 30 genres of hard/heavy rock where there's only 5 or 6.
