just bought my suzuki DRZ400SM today!! insured on wednesday so excited, runs a scorpion F series exhaust and i have a dynojet kit to go on as well as K N air filter.. not sure what else to do? it has led tail tidy, renthal bars, renthal grips, polisport handguards.. cannot wait!
you can get these to 60mph in well under 6 seconds, as low as 4 seconds, you need to up gear the bike, so longer gear ratio's. May sound silly, but if you're shifting less and on the power more, you are going to accelerate faster
i am looking into gettin a drz too cos they are cheap to insure, i have a yamaha R125 now and i want a next bike soon, you'll have to be nifty with the clutch and fast with your gear changes too, Note how he reaches 100kph or 60mph in third gear, they usually dont get there till 4th gear, hence the longer gearing
@jackriley8 no problems, just gets uncomfortable after 30 mins of solid highway miles. Anything above 80 and she starts to speed wobble however I blame the stock Dunlop Sportmax. You can change the sprocket sizes to suit your riding style.
@nemtizz Drop down to 39 tooth on the rear sprocket and leave the drive sprocket a 15 tooth. It will cruise at 70 a bit better, but it will still feel like you are screaming the engine. That's the main gearing people go for when they use motorways/highways.
30,000 miles isnt that much for an engine, is it? When you added the slip-on exhaust did you do anything else to it? Main Jet change? Carb Needle change? etc.
Or is this bike fuel injected? Ive never really looked into the engine, just what its like to ride.
I bought the bike with a slip-on (thought it was full system at the time). It shouldn't need a rejet maybe just a slight adjustment on the fuel/air screw but thats just about it. The only time it needs a rejet is if you put a full system on or remove the baffles. I run mine without the baffles that way I can benefit from the other mods I have done to the bike (K&N filter and JD jet kit). The DRZ are all carb. no FI and if you look after them right they last forever.
Sweet. im going to try and get a DRZ in a year or 2. They look and sound like pretty amazing bikes.
Was wondering if you could help me with something. Im on a 125cc Supermoto and I fitted an aftermarket slip-on exhaust. (The stock was half the diametre and had catalytic stuff in it) I was told to get a bigger jet but now it only starts with choke and the plug is black (might be because i have to start on choke) but with the stok jet it started without choke? im new to this stuff and confused?
@IP1NKYI Funny how you always hear if you open up the exhaust you need to run the carb richer. My problem is I have done a lot of this sort of work on cars, I port and flow test heads, and have raced circle track for three decades. I seem to always have just the opposite result, if I free up the breathing I have to lean the carb from what it was. I just did the heads on my R/100/GS, I put better intake valves in it and triple angled and blended the bowls. I had to lean the carbs a tad after.
Your DRZ sounds soo cool. And i really need to stop watching vids about them, every time i watch a vid i want to get one even more. =)
What is the advantage of having a single cylinder apose to having 2 or 4 like in sports bikes?
Anyway good vid, it definately shows off how good this bike sounds. although it doesnt look like your going 100+mph. It might not have looked like 100mph but i bet it felt like it =)
I've research all the mods the only thing it changes is the fuel consumption and maybe the oil change intervals nothing to biggy. The mods that affect the engine life are the big bores, hotcams and stroker sets.
.. gonna be a huge jump onto a bike like that.. but just man up and get usedd to it [ i went from a 1980 xl100 to a WR450f and i love it.. ride it all year round.. snow doesnt matter to us canadians
ya my last bike was a 2000Cr250 2-stroke and i just bought a 2004 DRZ 400 picking it up in a week, from the states. im also planing on riding it all year round. Go Canada
If you do a 100 miles on a motorway (highway) then you best be prepared to have a sore arse and tired arms also lifeless legs lol. Twisties then nothing but fun. The motor will cruise nicely at 70mph but anything after that starts to get a bit worrying wheel wobble and wind resistance. For long trips change the seat. Fuel economy not bad 100 miles full tank plus res, if modded though (3x3, jets, pipe) looking at 70 mile max (excluding res) before petrol is needed.
Same height as you mate the bike looks tall but isn't. Might be a stretch if you wear supermoto/motocross boots though. Also it depends what model you get. If you get the drz400 E convert to supermoto then the suspension is higher because it is a green laning bike. SM models are shorter.
Im getting one of these next summer...but im sorta worried about the seat height how tall are u? Im 5"8 but iv rode a yz125 and iv read that that has a higher seat than the drz and i could make the yz work fine..how ya think ill fare??nothing more embarrising than comming to a stop and just toppling over haha
Defo worth buying if you have the chance get one. Easy to tune, easy to insure and bulletproof. Top speed of mine 112mph average top speed 90+ depending on weather conditions
0-60mph how many sec.???thanks

Is there necessery to Jetting the carburator when it is installed a Slip-on ?

@skyline2119 Some people leave it, others don't. I didn't jet mine til I opened up the airbox and bought a header pipe to complete my exhaust system.

When the mods are added to the bike does it effect engine life any? I know these bike engines last for 30,000 miles roughly.

chrisdckm 2 years ago
there isnt a dynojet around me. the dealer should GIVE me a Yoshimura pipe ?!?!?!?!
Nikon89xj89 2 years ago
not give you, when you buy a new suzuki you should have the option to buy the bike and have a yoshimura pipe fitted (extra cost).
