These were not good cars, the build quality was poor,I owned one in 1975 Austin made the 1100/1300, British Leyland just couldn't compete against Japan, they didn't invest in new tooling & machinery, they were only interested in paying fat dividends to their shareholders, resulting in the collapse of most of UK motor manufacturing.
Used to try and find these cars or the 1300's in scrap yards during the 1970's. the engines were taken out and often ended up fitted in old mini 850's or 1000's because they were identical and fitted without much fuss. Was a cheap and easy way to boost your old mini............
My God, I had one of those! 1966 Connaught green Morris, superb car! I lived very near the factory where they were made (Cowley), long after production ended. BMW make Minis there now.
Hey, that would be my old 1100 that I sold on the side of the road. Found it lying around a wrecking yard, put it back together, drove it around for a couple of years. Then the missus at the time decided she hated it too much and a "for sale" sign ended up in the window.
A happy ending - She's disappeared, and I have a new 1380 powered 1100. That I found in exactly the same wrecking yard :P
AND Leyland/BMC Australia.
