I love my City , the people, the weather, the beaches, taking cruzing up and down the coast, to Malibu ,Santa Monica pier, Santa Barbara, . That's my city baby , OXnard Southern CaLi805nia... I miss home: )
My brother and I were kids when we lived in Oxnard in the late 50's and 60's. I couldn't believe it to see the old shopping center with Thrifty's, Sally's Dress Shop and the 5 & dime.
We used to love to sit in Thrifty's eating area and have ice cream and listen to the little jukeboxes that were on each table. We didn't mind how long it took for our mom & her friend to go pick out new dresses at Sally's! Great memories!
Huh, so Oxnard was a nice place once? That's amazing. Too bad that this place is way over crowded now with so many idiotic people roaming the streets. Nice video, thanks for the upload.
@bizznap Racist scum. Oxnard is an excellent example of a giant melting pot. Not only are there Mexicans who have been living there since before it became a city, but Filipinos, Japanese, Koreans, and Central and Latin Americans as well.
The panoramic shot of Oxnard at 1:59 was shot from the top of the water tower. Its a 150 foot climb streight up on a ladder concealed in the large center support tube of the tank. Theres an access hatch on top so you can change burned out aircraft warning lights as needed. Whoever shot this video must of had some real clout, and balls.. to be allowed to climb up there and film this. Awesome !
To bad its not like that any more such a gorgeous place it was,People acttuly went to the beach, now they stay home because they have phones internet video games ect to hell with tecnolygy. Oxnard,Ca <3 still is a great place but people just dont know how to enjoy it.You dont know what you have untill its gone a wise man said
U don't see some of those places before but the Downtown Plaza Park still looks the same but it's overrun by homeless people during the day and farmers marketers in the afternoon
Moved to Port Hueneme in 1957. Left there via Camarillo in 1969. Grateful I was wise enough to get out. Last time I was there, 7 or 8 years ago I couldn't leave the filth fast enough. And yes, it was once a nice place to live. I have to watch again to see if the Blue Onion was in the video. Best cherry/lime Rickies ever!
Wow... yeah, like MegaBrian35 said. To look at the town now, you'd never know any white people ever lived there. Nowadays it's just an overpopulated annex of Mexico with a bunch of joke gangs like the Colonia Chickens (Yeah, I know it's "Chiquez", but how many of them ever fight one on one with their fists? Thought so).
thank you for posting this. Did you see the Rosepark sign? We had to move there bc they would not sell houses elsewhere to blacks...although my parents were educators, once the sellers met them in person, there was always a reason why we couldnt buy. i rode those go-carts, my first car loan came from bank of a levy. Ahhh thank you for the walk down memory lane. Can't wait to show my parents!
All you people makeing stupid comments about how Oxnard is this and that. Its still a place where the weather is the best at times in the entire state.Thats why you got all those feilds that are just waiting to have new housing & building devolopment espeacialy the feilds that are off ventura & victoria roads. So close to the beach soon you will see multi-million dollar condo's or homes in the near future. You'll see the gang/ faze will die out soon I hope!!
I was raised in Oxnard in the 60's, loved the vid. The last time I was in Oxnard was 2004. From what I saw with the crime rate and gangs and the people in general made me very sad. Oxnard is not what it once was. I have no reason to return to Oxnard and for that I am very thankfull
That's the Oxnard I know in the 60's,I was in Oxnard, five or six years later in 1966-67, While I was there, I watched Jay Ward's Fractured Fairy Tale cartoon about Goldilocks & the 3 Bears, which the bears want to hibernate at Goldie's winter resort at Mount Pinos in Ventura County ,near Oxnard, Oh, I was at Mt. Pinos in January of February '66 and played in the snow. Oxnard is Groovy!
thanks for hte upload it is interesting to watch the ox city from way back...some look familiar and some don't...imagine uploading a video of this time and see it later in the future to see how it changes...
At the cemetary across from the old Levitz furniture store. The Esplanade Mall was a great place to hang out. I met Lee Van Cleef from the good ,the Bad and the ugly movie there in 76. He also lived there in Oxnard. Geroge Kennady lived in Oxnard Shores. Fishing derby at Oxnard shores was fun every year.Santa Cruz Market with Manager Johnny Bell. Coolest man ever to run that store.
I was born there at Saint Johns in 61, I left in 2005. Oh the memories. The fishing at the Islands was superb in the late 60's and to the end of the 70's . At 212 you can see the Topa Topa mountain range that towers above Santa Paula. The City Center Park, where all the city buses used to make their rounds. The woolworth Store on A st , candy by the pound. Rexall drugs. Even the Thrifty Drug on Saviers rd next to the old Pic and save used to have a diner counter. My parents are burried there.
This clip is from Oxnard 1961 a movie made by Dr. Ted Greathouse, in 1961. The full length movie can be purchased from The City of Oxnard, call The City Clerks Office for information. It is a remarkable movie showing a then small town which was, and is growing quickly. Of course the original does not have John Mayer music in the background, but has its own unique sound track.
