He staged a rebellion to try to save his race, failed, and ironically was sentenced to be put into the Phantom Zone. The scientist that was given the responsibility of putting him into the Phantom Zone? You guessed it, Jor El.

1. The cop was holding it at him in a manner suggestive of a threat. Easy to deduce he intended to do something with it, and the first thought on a guy like Zod's mind is "weapon."

2. Zod was imitating (poorly) how the cop held it and just sort of had a happy accident trying to imitate the cop's hand positions on it.
