  • Thanks for taking the time for creating this, it helped out a lot.

  • How did you extract the arm from the body? Also, how do you extract say, one part of the rib cage without the body structure coming apart?

  • How did you extract the arm from the body?

  • Can I ask a question? This isn't a criticism, it comes from complete ignorance about what is going on. Why did this take so long? What was he _doing_--I mean conceptually? Why not just put dots on every muscle and so on and then draw lines between them?

Again this isn't a criticism, I'm asking what is the idea behind what is going on. Thanks.

  • @greg55666 great question, Greg! You could draw vertices on the photo and then create polygons around them, but you'd still have to position them in 3D space. And then you'd have to deal with the backside of the character. And then sew the front and back halves together. In the end, that would be probably just as much (but probably more) work. Does that make sense? really the best way to understand it is to just try modeling for yourself. Best of luck to you!

  • I cant find any reference, for my image plane.....all the reference i find is arms on the side!!!! Anybody have any good reference for this?

  • yes there is modeling for games ,movie animation and stills but this is a great intro to learn from and tweak to however you want. with adding the holding edges to deform for whtever method you wanna apply it to, for the ppl analyzing this guy and saying its not for anything other than stills its a stupid thing to say cause the guy is just trying to show basic body modeling for beginners.

  • this is the best body tut ive seen so far most other ppl throw in useless big words

and tap dance around (actually) modeling while explaining the reason for the edgeflow. they are too busy showing off. i just finished a tut on gnomon head and couldnt find a body one and this is on par with gnomon!

  • @miasma30 thanks, Miasma! It's really great to hear people benefiting from my tuts. Be sure to check out my other ones on youtube as well as my full scale courses on lynda.com

  • why does it have to be a guy :(

  • how do u make it in the perspective view that you can see the back faces but only the front, and when u look at the back faces u cant see the front ones? also what exactly does that do? One more question, how do u make the back of the body since u dont have a model for the back?

  • Haha penis!

  • very intuitive

  • I found this tutorial very helpful but its kinda' absurd. Know what I mean?

  • is it u in the reference images ?

  • @surferadi96 nope. but it is my hand in the hand modeling tutorial ;)

  • thank you so much, I can even use your technique on different objects in Maya.

  • there needs to be an easier way to do this :C some 3d equivalent of just.. drawing.

I still say there needs to be gloves you can put on, so the computer reads your hand positions,a nd you can just place polygons with your fingers.. and even sculpt..

  • @KairuHakubi short answer is... no?

  • @Quikie93 I wasn't asking a question XD

  • @KairuHakubi however you CAN sculpt models, but not with a glove x)

  • @KairuHakubi actually they have that out now but its hella expensive places like inition sells that stuff, you can put your hand in the air with a tool and sculpt in thin air and it translates it in 3d also, they have a 3d printer that creates a clay kinda image of your model and i heard you can replace the clay with chocolate lol .

  • @miasma30 'inition' ?

  • beutyful man

  • Great tutorial for the beginner like me! Covers the important stuff rather than focusing on useless details. Well scripted too, unlike a lot of tutorials. Thanks!

  • Thanks for this great tutorial and all of your others! Greatly appreciated that you decide to put these out here to help others with modeling.

  • can u make a tutorial to make a muscular torso model in easy way

  • Maybe it was the right time for it all to click into place, maybe it was just a mental block, or maybe it's your clarity, but whatever the reason, I have to thank you. This and your face tutorial gave me a grasp of things that have eluded me literally for years. For some reason I never grasped character stuff until I saw these (even after other tutorials). Now I'm gaining ground rapidly.

  • this can be done with the box tool, but this methid seems much more direct... thanx !! :D

  • I would really love to know where you got your stock from xD

  • This would be a better program for organic models, right? What's the program? For modelling scaled buildings sketchup is fantastic, but it's not very good at environments or organic objects such as animals, people and plants.

  • this is maya..... 3d application software

  • grow up :P

  • thanks, this tut is very good

  • Anybody have any idea why when i try to extrude the edges to make the arm, the edges extrude in all directions and not the direction i'm pulling?

  • @Krymzon40

Press "W", simple as that, I had the same problem too.

  • you have to select the option keep faces together is under the menu edit mesh

  • This is so great, this really helps. Looks very easy to understand and follow. Thanks.

  • Hey, where can I get the reference image, the website doesnt work... Thanks in advance!

  • Thats a good way to model a person! but how do you insert pictures into the background using lightwave?

  • nevermind i figured it out

  • can you please make a tutorial for making a simple humanoid using less than 500 polygons without subpatch? just a blocky character for video games?

  • dude photoshop that dudes package out!

  • dude it's a reference photo. Be an adult and stop acting like it's a big deal. Im sure if he was modeling a female you wouldn't have anything to say about it.

  • hahahahah

  • Great tutorial. I prefer that the arms would be down when I model them on the side. It's a lot easier look at in my opinon. One thing that disappointed me about Autodesk is that they no longer release Personal Learning Editions of Maya.

  • you are the best

  • Interesting beginning technique here as well. Proficient, simple, and easy. Very nice!

  • Really useful quality tutorial - thanks for this

  • What medium are you modeling for? Game asset modeling needs to stay clear of non-planar polys which I see a lot of in your demo.

  • I do mostly hi-poly stuff for TV and film

  • You do a very nice job. Thanks for posting.

  • you work for a TV company? What TV company do you work for? I want to do the same thing but im still in school. Do you have any advice for me. I have Maya, Zbrush and Photoshop on my computer. I like to use them all but im not that good with Zbrush yet. I'd like to hear more about what you do. i am majoring in Simulation and Game design now but i have a real Interest in Video, tv, and CG. Ok well i think thats all i had to say. Thanks for making this, it really helped out.

  • @drsardonic That is why you triangulate your finished model, most game exporters will triangulate the mesh for you if you don't do this in advance.

  • you won't be able to animate with that model.

try to think more about how the arm really moves instead of only focusing on just the muscles.

(anatomy wise it was good. some parts where a bit unsual, but overall it sold as an arm and chest

  • Freaking genius! I absolutely loved the edge loop face modeling tutorial, it helped me make my first non-garbage face ever, so I'm totally stoked about this one too!

Wish DigitalTutors had more Max stuff, though. Your videos are so good I can use most of the techniques in Max, but I still wish DT carried more Max products.

  • how do i get the front and side images up for a stencil :/?

  • Just a quick question. this works well for males, but if you wwere to do a female how would you get the breast shape? extrude after the major torso areas are done or would you just make the cape encompass the breast?

Females harder to model than males and the breast and buttocks seem to be the biggest problem areas for me. Any help would be awesome. thanks

  • basically, it is just an extrude from the faces where the breast will be. make sure that the edge loop that goes accross the pec and over the shoulder ends up UNDER the breast

  • @huebertie1 IDK about you but for me males are harder to model than females

  • very good and best tutorial in maya modeling. body modeling

  • from what i was taught its easier to use new cylinders for the legs and arms

  • where did you get your model pictures from?

  • thanks man your video helped out alot

  • This is a really awesome tutorial! Your speech is very clear and this is very easy to understand. I really appreciate that this is done in real-time instead of sped up.

  • This looks great! What is the best way to do this with a head? Do I start off the cylynder with as many polys as the neck ends with? Or do I just cut accordingly and try to get the same number of verts?

  • Great tut. Can someone link me to good referance images of people in T Pose.

  • the best technique i've ever seen

  • how do i attach the fingers to the hand?

  • i'm not sure I have understand this tutorial, but now i want photograph my penis in a front and top mode

Just a joke, very good tutorial!

  • i like your technique. it's easy to understand

    and follow. Thank you

  • whoa, was that sped up for time, or is this guy really that fast?

  • Man is tutorial is awesome, I learned so much.

  • sweet. really clear and easy to follow. Good modelling tips.

  • Awesome tips! Thanks for taking the time to offer your knowledge.
