Well I'm happier with Gionta. Works hard, leads, does the little battles and shows up most of the time... which Kovy didn't do except for 07-08. If Gionta played all 82 games, his pace would've given him 37 goals.
@dgd151 Yeah and Kovy came close just once and that was playing on a team with Jagr, Lemieux, Straka and Lang. Gio all the way. Interesting how Kovy goes and all of a sudden the Canadiens become a real team with an identity, however late it came around. In the playoffs, Gionta was superb and along with Cammalleri is the kind of guy I want teaching Hab youngsters. They're a much better example than Alex who rubbed off on the Kostitsyns with the lesson of "Rely on talent, try once in a while."
Not bad, pretty good video about the biggest suck face in the history of the NHL. Alexi Fake-a-lev the soccer player. Too bad, it was the perfect fit, the team I hate the most and the player
I hate the most. oh well maybe it will happen again. Habs Hater

Kovalev is a bum who need to get out of ottawa hated him in Montreal hate him even more on my team trade him for a 9th round pick and where do I sign go back to Fucking Montreal where fans like players who show up once every ten games
No its because Gainey signed Gomez and Cammalleri and had about 5 mill left to pay Kovalev, but Gionta was also offered the money and snapped it up before Kovalev did. In fact, the reason Kovalev didn't snap it up right away was because he wanted a longer contract than 2 years. He wanted to retire with the Habs.
I'm not NOT on Gionta's side (he has been playing great and trying hard), but when faced with the decision to keep Kovalev OR Gionta, I would have picked Kovalev. Better yet, I would have kept Gomez out of the picture and signed both Kovalev AND Gionta, since Cammalleri plays centre as well. It is not a one-for one-deal because although Gionta is a much harder worker, Kovalev was a part of the team's identity (please no slacker comments, we all know) and this team lacks an identity.
Oh and I watch other teams, yes, but Habs are the main one, with the Canucks as a close second. Fact is, when Kovalev plays to his potential, he dominates play all over. Gionta, as hard of a worker he is, cannot say the same. Plus, Kovalev is, or at least close to, a point-per-game playoff performer, which is where it really counts. AND he mentors the young Eastern European talent (Plekanec, Kostitsyns) and has crazy chemistry with Markov
In 314 games with Montreal, Kovalev had 264 points. Not even close to a PPG.
List me a few occasions where Kovalev 'dominated'. I can think of one, maybe two. One being the comeback against the Rangers, and two being his return from Gainey's suspension against the Senators.
Yes, he is a good player, but a second line talent, like he is in Ottawa now. Gionta is a first line winger, and arguing that is pointless.
Christ, we lose 5 games and the bandwagon is keeling over already...
I completely echo all of dar89ren's points. Kovalev as a mentor? He taught both Kostitsyn's how to take off shifts and play down to the opponent's level. If you want a "Russian" mentor, look at Kovalchuk or Datsyuk - they lead by example and are outstanding complete hockey players. The fact of the matter is, Kovalev never gave it his all here, yet so many ignorant bandwaggoners who call themselves fans believe he is the answer to the Habs' problems - when in fact, he was the cause.
And if you want to look further - Brian Gionta was top line talent in New Jersey, whereas Kovalev is a career 2nd liner. Gionta, Gomez, Camalleri and all the other UFA's brought here carry tremendous pride in wearing the CH on their chests. Taking a shift off, a day off, or even a moment off is not part of our history. Saku emboddied everything a captain should be - despite his size, he gave it his all, always. Gionta will do the same. I'll take work ethic over talent any day of the week.
Give it a while, they basically rebuilt the entire team! Kovy was part of the identity, no questions asked, I dont know if I agree with Gainy for letting him go, but either way, a new franchise player will develop. Unfortunately the the closest one we've got got a little to close to Prices skate blade.
Dude, ALL I said was he is a near point-per-game player IN THE PLAYOFFS. I think he's a great playmaker and shooter on the powerplay. I didn't say he was the captain, but he's one of those guys that the other team HAS to cover, and that might have been his problem in Montreal: the opposition only really had him to blanket, since Koivu's line was good, but not great, and if Kovalev gets an opening its a near guaranteed goal. Moreover, we don't really have a guy that can hold onto the puck
Like he could. Our new top line can get banged off the puck pretty easily, they depend on speed and openings to carry it in the offensive zone, whereas Kovalev was nearly impossible to knock off the puck. As for games where he dominated, the ones you noted for sure and most of 2007-2008. I'm not saying he is the franchise player, I'm saying that he was a cheap option and should not have been let go in my opinion.
LOL i've had a beaver tail on that street corner where the mulletron is. i'm not from ottawa though, ottawa sucks. go habs.

Kovalev plays to his potential roughly 6 games out of 82 a year.
Gionta is 30 years old, making 5 million a season. Gionta is renowned for his work ethic.
Kovalev is 36, making 5 million as well. He is the complete opposite of Gionta in terms of work ethic.
If you take Gomez out've the picture, guess what. No Cammalleri, no Gionta.
What on earth is appealing in Kovalev? For a guy who was half assed as he was, why do people in this city love him, yet shit all over Koivu?
