The drunk must have been worth a lot of $ to have gotten a wife like this. They all tollerate him and forget the man he is when dealing with the Bennets./ Charlotte is of the school of believing that a man with masses of $ is more important than a man of character. Wickham is charming. That's how he get rich women because he has nothing of value himself. No one could check his background so he's home free with the Bennets. Darcy is egotistical understanding his $ can get him anyone.
The one thing that bugs me in this version is how they portray Darcy in the beginning. In the novel, Darcy even explains to Elizabeth towards the end that even though he had been brought up to have tons of pride in his family's wealth and status, he never really embraced it. In this version, Firth looks like he hates people. In the 2005 version, Darcy's character is just coldly observant in the beginning, but he develops expressions of quiet vulnerability as he releases some of his pride.
...and for me, I was more drawn in to the 2005 version. The camera shots varied, they played with light, and I felt it was meant more to draw emotional connection than the BBC version. I'm sorry, but whenever I try to watch this one, I get the urge to stop watching. Just how my brain reacts to it. It's closer to a documentary of Jane Austen's book and if their goal was to be accurate, I guess they nailed it. Collin Firth's acting just seems more toward a comedy.
I've heard from so many people how much better the BBC version is from the 2005 version. I understand that they picked apart all the errors in the 2005 version, like the lack of historical accuracy (though some have countered that), like with the manners and clothes. I think it really depends on taste. If you want a book you can watch, then the BBC version is for you, since it's longer and has more of the book. However, a lot of people care more about the artistic taste given off by a movie...
Mr Collins, that mincing fop, completely cracks me up. I love his simpering little character. But you know, I don't know why it would annoy Lizzy to dance with him. It seems that in these country dances, you aren't actually dancing with your partner as much as you're dancing with a bunch of people and once in a while you have to briefly hold hands with your partner. It's not like a waltz, where you'd be body to body the whole time. I would TOTALLY not want to waltz with Mr. Collins. UGH!!
What I love about the whole Lizzy-Darcy dance is that it's not just a dance, it's more like a duel- but using words instead of swords. It's not a fun, lighthearted dance, but slower and more somber than the others- the perfect backdrop for their verbal parrying and thrusting..
Hmm. Odd. Whenever Darcy is onscreen the only thing I can think is, "Oh yes, you can be as aloof and distant as you like, but we all KNOW you're a beast in bed! Have your wild way with me, fine sir!! Phwoar!!" and then my mind strays into territories left best unspecified since there might be children on this page XD
i love how mr darcy insists that lizzie isnt for him and yet everytime he sees her his face gets all serious and its like hes thinking ''my god i love her''
@danamariegordon You're totally right. Its all about dignity, manners and value.. As long as u take care of them, people are gonna set u as an exemplar..
When u compare dancing those days and dancing these days, its the difference between the sky and the earth! Dancing in Jane Austen's days was so elegant, prepared for and so arranged and organized.. But dancing these days.. I cant even call it dancing! I should call it... Madness! Craziness! An irregular moves of the body along with music! Something.. Horrid! Man! Take me to Austen's days when love was expressed in letters.. Not SMS! Take me to those primitive yet beautiful days <3 *sigh*
The conversation between Elizabeth Bennett and Darcy is really well written and executed. "You should say something about the dance perhaps, and I might remark about the number of couples". "You consult your own feelings in this case or seek to gratify fine".
The conversation between Elizabeth Bennett and Darcy is really well written and executed. "You may say something about the dance perhaps, and I may remark about the number of couples". "You seek to consult your own feelings in this case or choose to gratify fine".
The thing that amazes me about eighteenth century england is that you see Lizzies fifteen year old sisters dancing with younger officers who are probably only about 16 to 18 years old themselves and yet would have been expected to lead a unit of seasoned soldiers twice as old as they if the need arose! Oh well...such was and to some extent still is the class system we all hold so near and dear.
A truly wonderful adaption of the story, which has quite rightly been placed amongst the most highly regarded and loved novels written by that giant of English literature Jane Austen.
This was made with such skill and regard for that novel, I don't think it has or ever will be bettered. Beautifuilly acted, with the mannerisms and costumes of a bygone England faithfully portrayed. The two main protagonists here spark with a sexual tension that holds one enthralled throughout. Great drama.
I watched this dance scene along side the Kiera Knightly one. Its amazing - they almost completely finish their conversation in the 2005 version in the time it takes before Elizabeth even chides Darcy into talking in the BBC version. Just goes to show - the BBC got the tension right. I love this version!!! (Don't get me wrong, I think the 2005 is OK, but just OK).
@Nouranmosaad97 Jane's head bobs like that because during the filming of this scene, one camera had a hair on it. So they didn't have quite enough film and had to slow down this little bit.
Darcy was right about lizzy's family though. THey got no class at all, only jane and lizzy have some sense in them. THe rest of the sisters are so trashy.
@pinkycow123 I supposed she didn´t realized Mr Darcy's affection and passionate love because she was blinded by prejudice ... but as you said, if I were her, I would have melted in the floor =)
Mr Hurst is some kind of troll--he eats too much, drinks too much, doesn;t read; slaughters the wildlife. Tbat;s life for him and those who have to live with him. A natural Tory voter.
I like both of the versions, this one and the 2005 version.......even though it's not as accurate. I think Keira Knightley was very good as Elizabeth, as was Jennifer Ehle. I do agree that Jennifer was a bit more formal and subdued than Keira. I think that Keira got the playfulness of the character better than Jennifer........they were both amazing.
wow I thought Keira Knightley was great as Lizzy, but after seeing this version, I dare say this actress plays the best Elizabeth Bennet I've ever seen!
Amazing! 6 hours worth of film, beautiful locations, talented acting, fantastic screenplay and you comment on "LOOKS"?? How shallow are you?No offence.
Mr. Darcy was not this boody in the books, and I specially re-read it to make sure I was right. *Especially* during this dance, he asked questions and talked with a smile. It wasn't until Eliza mentioned Mr. Wickham that Mr. Darcy got angry.
Meh. I like 2005 better, even if it isn't as accurate.
@acta5534 Later on when Lizzie is helping his sister Georgiana at the piano forte and he gazing at her, his eyes are all warmth and a very slight smile plays about his lips. That's the sort of thing that drives a woman wild; he is no pushover.
Nah... Mr Wickham is not number 1 hated because he is like -100 in number... But nah the story wouldn't have been any fun without "Mr Collins insight",Mrs Bennet's annoyance and Caroline's desdain... But, Mr Wickham is the real antagonist that displays himself in a loving manor at first sight but inside he is a rotten apple. Love to hate him... lol will always be my favorite story ever and will never get tired of watching it again and again...
I love how he looks her at 1:33 and is surprised by his beauty that night... ♥ One of Darcy's virtue is he never dissimulate, as we see when he talks about lizzie with caroline....And his facial expression is just *_*!! He's trying to be so haughty when he dances with her, altough he has already started melting for her!!!
Every time I see this scene I can't help but notice the camera flub or whatever it is. Notice Jane in the backround at 6:13 ...she is the only one moving in slow motion. It's kind of weird like a scene froma creepy film...lol
@MyFondestMemories it just looks like slow motion because Jane is moving her head to the slow rhythm of the dance and the other ones are waiting for the actual dance music to start, that's why they're not moving
wow who did these women's hair? and how long did it take? PS MOST DESPISED IN THE NOVEL... 1.CAROLINE= WITCH 2.MRS BENNET=IRRITATING! HER AND HER NERVES! 3. MR COLLINS=PLZ SOMEONE GO INTO THE MOVIE AND BEAT HIM WITH A BAT AND CAROLINE TOO!?
Smile Mr. Darcy! damn it. SMILE! I bet he would look even more handsome if he did:) he looks so freakin pissed. I just want to make him smile, give him a hug or something!
Am not a fan of the 2005 version. The creator of the film even said when reading the book she interpreted Mr.Darcy's attitude to being shy, not to being prideful. And that is how she wanted it portrayed in the movie. Which completely takes away from the character. It is called "Pride and Prejudice" for a reason. This version is longer but so much more accurate to the book. I love it.
@missrladkdls "I have been a selfish being all my life..I was given good principles, but left to follow them in pride and conceit... Unfortunately an only son I was spoiled by my parents, who though good themselves allowed, encouraged almost taught me to be selfish and overbearing, to care for none beyond my own family circle... Such I was from 8 to 8 and 20 and such I still might have been but for you dearest, loveliest, Elizabeth! " - quote from ch.58. He was selfish but Elizabeth changed him
@CulbRus well duh. of course this version is more accurate, it's longer! the movie version in 2005 couldn't be exactly like the book, or else it would be 6 hours long, like this one. what i really like about the 2005 version is the cinematography and the music.
Mr.Collins thinks he is impressing Lizzy with his dancing skills then he runs into that lady....I love that Mr. Darcy tries not to laugh at him... awww he so cute.
@FoxCreekStudios Yes. Mr. Collin is a nerd that all of a sudden has all these young women around him who he knows is for sale. He is lucky to have a supporter in Lady Catherine and he gets it so he kow-tows to Mr. Darcy. He can
The drunk must have been worth a lot of $ to have gotten a wife like this. @BubblegumPopMusic13 He does actually smile, at the very end after the wedding as they were walking out of the church.

@acta5534 Later on when Lizzie is helping his sister Georgiana at the piano forte and he gazing at her, his eyes are all warmth and a very slight smile plays about his lips. That's the sort of thing that drives a woman wild; he is no pushover.

"This is no very striking resemblance of your own character I'm sure". They really do deserve each other, their humour is exactly the same.

I get dizzy watching them dance like that! :P

MyFondestMemories 1 year ago 3

Am not a fan of the 2005 version. The creator of the film even said when reading the book she interpreted Mr.Darcy's attitude to being shy, not to being prideful. And that is how she wanted it portrayed in the movie. Which completely takes away from the character. It is called "Pride and Prejudice" for a reason. This version is longer but so much more accurate to the book. I love it.

@CulbRus
but thats the point he seen as proud but he is actually shy and sensitive!!

He was selfish but Elizabeth changed him
CulbRus 1 year ago
@CulbRus well duh. of course this version is more accurate, it's longer! the movie version in 2005 couldn't be exactly like the book, or else it would be 6 hours long, like this one. what i really like about the 2005 version is the cinematography and the music.

mr darcy is so mysterious and sexy!

i just realised the music that started at 6:03 is the same song that they used in the 2005 version :) I LIKE THIS SONG!

@MegaCoffeebean
No actually a postcard to Henry Purcell was used in the 2005 version. It was not composed until that year of 2005.

Darcy. He can
