I had one of these as a company car and if you drive it like a dick it will still do 50mpg at a constant 140mph it shows 50mpg I had a Leon FR after this that was faster top end but the acceleration was nowhere near as good as the bm and the fuel economy went to shit when you drove it hard unlike the bm which I never got below 45mpg the Leon would easily drop below 40mpg if you drove it a little bit hard. That said the Leon was more fun to drive
What is this dickhead on about? If it driove like shit no one would want it. This is the obvious way to go about ecomony motoring - make a car the same but use less fuel. If they just wanted MPG why not just make a tiny shitbag of a car like a Gwiz with a tiny diesel? Because it would be a horrible thing to drive and that's a compromise people don't want.
my 320d Efficient Dynamics has done over 12000miles now, and the computer sits at 57.6mpg... on normal everyday driving. On a long journey, keeping sensible, but not crawling, you can easily achieve the manufacturer figure of 68.9mpg.... drive like a BMW driver and you will get close to 60mpg.
The tester guy misses the point at the end of his clip; BMW have created a super economy car that doesn't fell sluggish, AND it retains all the sporty driving experience expected from a BMW
I have the cheaper spec version of this car, the 316d efficient dynamics. Same 2.0l engine but tuned down to around 118bhp. Same 16 inch wheels and lowered suspension. My llifetime mpg so far over 31,000 miles of mixed urban and motorway driving is 58.8mpg. And no it doe not lack power but you do have to drop to 5th below 60mph if you want it to pick up quickly. I also just changed my rear tyres at 30,000 miles.
Classic new car road testing: expecting the best performance and fuel economy out of a new engine. 1500 miles is not enough to get a good indication of fuel economy! I wish it had another thousand miles on it so they could see why BMW claim 68.9mpg.
@axelloder Glad you spotted that too. 1571 is nothing on a new car. Suspect it would get a lot better over time. I think it's a good review bar the lack of miles on the clock.
@yupescumuk I thought he said .427 to .426. Again, 0.01 isn't that much of a difference for a car like this. Well maybe like 0.000005 litres per 100 km. Maybe less or more, can't bother calculating at this point.
if you can afford to buy this car, you probably dont give a shit about fuel consumption in my opinion. check out the golf bluemotion guys, it has 105HP but driving it on the motorway on just 3l/100km puts a huge smile on your face
@Octavideoz not entirely true. it'd be good for a long time investment, as the mpg is pretty decent. alot of companies are buying similar cars from bmw because of the good mpg, which means spending less on fuel and emissions tax, while still looking the part as a nice company car to show off in.
@Nikolas134 and i tought portugal was a ripoff...but porsches etc you need 100.000 or more but this 50.000 and if you buy one with 1 or 2 years its 25k/30k
my friend has this car and it does roughly 63-65mpg on the motorway at 70mph speed, u can get over 60pmg basically if u drive on the motorway so its not bad for a car with 163bhp
There is another clip of a British journalist who tested the exact same car over a distance of 1105 miles and achieved a fuel economy of 68.9 m.p.g. So check your numbers please.
@saintmirrenmalky@pokervacha. A very big smile, 60-65mpg on a long run but I tend to be heavy footed, which is quite strange at it hardly changes the MPG. Its fun to drive, the rear has stepped out a few times :) comfortably on my normal long runs (5 hrs a time). Cluncky compared to the 2.2 Honda Accord and 2.0 Audi A4 I but it didn't take too long to get used to. 5dr 163bhp in white, the LEDS are a nice touch on the handles although no rear camera or quircky gimmiicks on the dash. its fun!

@jonny5777 When they'll fire this guy (which i hope it will be soon.. like... tomorrow or something..), don't worry... i'll be the one doin' the reviews... and in a proper way... not "the dorky way" ... Thanks for the vote of confidence ! :)
And trust me.. at 1000 RPM even that wonderful engine just doesn't have the torque to move that car efficiently.. why ? well.. maybe because the turbine only kicks in above 1300 RPM... you should change gear at a 2400-2600 and cruise at above 1700 in order to get maximum eficiency out of THIS engine..(which has a torque of 380Nm from 1900 RPM !!!!!!! all the way to 2750 RPM - so imagine what torque it would have at 1000 RPM ... again.. not that the engine is bad my any means...)
I'm sorry but driving around at 1000 RPM even with a diesel engine as good as that one, you will still use more fuel than you would normally use, because you are just UNDER-REVING that engine all the time... no diesel engine will move a 1.5 ton car at 1000 RPM in maximum efficiency mode you idiot... in order to move at a fuel efficient way you need to keep the car as close to the maximum torque range as possible...
@demon23ro Only if you were to floor it, most petrol engines have max torque at 3500-4500rpm, but they're alot more economical at around 2000. When rpm is lowered drag from the engine parts is also lowered reducing power needed.
The turbo probably kicks in at around 1900, but that doesn't really matter because when you want to get maximum mpg you don't have a lot of throttle and therefore not enough pressure to spin the turbo.
That's the whole point. People with very powerful petrol cars don't lose their license so often, because they only floor the car occasionally, but BMW 3-series 2.0 diesel is the fastest driven most ticketed car ever. Most drivers drive it fast constantly because it always gets good fuel economy.
He misses the point in his summing up. BMW's philosophy is all about getting improved fuel economy WITHOUT sacrificing any driving pleasure. There are plenty of other manufacturers doing that trade-off. I don't think BMW is interested in doing that.
@CometMcNaught - you are very correct. Driving pleasure is a key aim at BMW. The moment its gone will mark the beginning of the decline. One hopes that moment never comes.
My daily driver is a 2007 Pontiac G5 (same thing as a Chevy Cobalt), and I get 36 mpg (which is 43 mpg Imperial). And it only cost me $14k (11k euro, 9.5k GBP). Nice deal I must say
But then what's the point? If they lessen driving pleasure and maximise fuel efficiency, then it won't be a BMW anymore! You don't drive a BMW to count fuel economy figures, you drive it for the sheer fun. What this provides you is pretty good mileage, along with the strong driving virtues of a Bimmer. What more do you expect?
@ShizoluckyShizostar Exactly. A BMW should be about driving pleasure. That's why it's called 'Efficient Dynamics' They still wanted to make a great drivers car. Beat that Toyota!!
When are they going to start bringing these cars to America? I know they wouldn't sell like hotcakes, but can't they make it an option to have my new car be a diesel?
@guitaristwagner Yeah, our car selection is so far behind everyone else's. I watch this and Top Gear and I'm like, "Damnit! Why can't I have those?!?" Love America, hate our cars!
Bear in mind that the Imperial gallon is different than the American gallon. . . so this fuel economy is more along the lines of 41 mpg in our country.
@randomdude10010 its funny the grass is always greener on the other side. I drive an American car in the UK (Camaro) BMW 320s are just so common here they do not seem special I used to drive a 530d. Euro cars are too good they are boring I like the fact the camaro handles like a boat; its more fun :-)
@FutureMarine246 your regal isn't a diesel ;)
foteriano 1 year ago
@FutureMarine246 So? is it as efficient as this one? this car is about efficiency, not power!
arde2468 1 year ago
@FutureMarine246 Good, but does it get at least a quarter of mpgs of this one?

But then what's the point? If they lessen driving pleasure and maximise fuel efficiency, then it won't be a BMW anymore! You don't drive a BMW to count fuel economy figures, you drive it for the sheer fun. What this provides you is pretty good mileage, along with the strong driving virtues of a Bimmer. What more do you expect?

320d !!? no no 335i thats the best 3 without the M
MrCooltoni 1 year ago
BMW should consider re-naming the 320d ED. it's name currently sounds like a coy advertisement for Viagra.

Fuck these adverts

BMW should spend a bit of time designing new interior for the 3-series. This one sucks badly, Hyundai I30's is way better... lol
BMWs start from 5-series for me.
andyKCIUK 1 year ago
Why risk looking like a ... if you don't get what the 3-series is good for? If you want better ride and fuel economy why not buy a Citroen?
ShizoluckyShizostar 1 year ago 2
@ShizoluckyShizostar Exactly. A BMW should be about driving pleasure. That's why it's called 'Efficient Dynamics' They still wanted to make a great drivers car. Beat that Toyota!!
DBerkwood 1 year ago 2
@DBerkwood yeah if i ever get a diesel it'll be a bmw for sure
desimunda116 1 year ago
@DBerkwood Well Toyota builds a better 4x4 than BMW and more reliable so Beat that BMW!!

When are they going to start bringing these cars to America? I know they wouldn't sell like hotcakes, but can't they make it an option to have my new car be a diesel?
randomdude10010 1 year ago
@randomdude10010 they have a 335d in america and maybe another one i cant think of, buty not a 320d dont ask me why, americas stupid.
guitaristwagner 1 year ago
@guitaristwagner Yeah, our car selection is so far behind everyone else's. I watch this and Top Gear and I'm like, "Damnit! Why can't I have those?!?" Love America, hate our cars!
randomdude10010 1 year ago
@randomdude10010 Yea seriously! What is wrong with this picture? A lot of these euro cars would soar off the showroom! I dunno...
bmwboi88 1 year ago
@randomdude10010
Bear in mind that the Imperial gallon is different than the American gallon. . . so this fuel economy is more along the lines of 41 mpg in our country.
bg1379 1 year ago
@bg1379 Which is still excellent for a non-hybrid car.
Amazetbm 1 year ago
@Amazetbm
Our 335d gets 36, which isn't that far behind. . . . especially when it is MUCH faster!
bg1379 1 year ago
@bg1379 You do pay through the nose for a 335d, though, when compared to a 320d.
kibcubed 1 year ago
@kibcubed yeah but a 335d is worth it.
mada88 1 year ago
@randomdude10010 its funny the grass is always greener on the other side. I drive an American car in the UK (Camaro) BMW 320s are just so common here they do not seem special I used to drive a 530d. Euro cars are too good they are boring I like the fact the camaro handles like a boat; its more fun :-)
