Genjyo Sanzo is about the most unorthodox priest ever. Never in a million years would any priest wield a Smith and Wesson. That's an absolutely refreshing change from monks wielding staffs. No offense meant but Sanzo is my idea of a vanquishing priest.

Ironic every character's personality is the exact opposite of their legend counterpart. Goku was originally an arrogant wise ass rather than a naive kid. Cho Hakai was a lusty glutton rather than a cultured/classy man. Sha Gojo was a loyal and honest man rather than a street-wise gambler. Sanzo was an ascetic and noble monk rather than a badass. Finally, Kou (Goku's nephew actually because Goku was actually Ox King's brother) was a spoiled brat instead of anything BUT spoiled

Still, it just seems so fitting for the characters and their personalities even though they differ in the legend. Sanzo the peace-seeking monk weilding a sawed-off S&W pistol, Goku naive and childish rather than arrogant, Hakkai a courteous gentleman rather than a lecherous pig and Gojyo as a street-wise, smack-talking punk rather than his loyal and concerned couterpart. Talk about putting a spin on things. But then again, that's what makes the anime great.

After he reached what he thought was the ends of the heaven marked by 5 pillars (it was actually still Buddha's five fingers), he thought he'd leave a note to prove that he'd been there so he wrote something to the extent of "Great Sage Equal to Heaven was here" and pissed against one

Techinally, Gensomaden Saiyuki (or Saiyuki from the manga point of view), came out first, but if you were to go by the timeline, Saiyuki Burial would have come out first by the anime's timeline, while Saiyuki Gaiden would have come out first by the manga's timeline.
