Hi there, just to put things right. I have been singing this song for many ,many years, and the word Marxist is not and never has been in the lyrics of this song. I can only assume you have misheard the word in the chorus, " hark the MARTIAL tramp is heard from Cork to Donegal." Now that that's cleared up, I hope you will feature it again! No hard feelings, Ádh mór, Tony, (The Flying Column)
Please, I hear from evry one in Eire, that Mr DeValera was a traitor, but what did he do? And, yea, he was an american, and I think he used that to protect himself when evry one else was risking life and limb for Ireland.
She has the voice of God's most loveliest angel. She hypnotizes me as does Patricia Ferns in a trance every time their music plays. This the best version of this song even better than the previous artist.
Thanks,as this is the first I heard this version!!!
Kathleen Thompson was her maiden name. She Married Eamon Largey,he was a Newry man...she from Belfast.I believe they had two daughters and one runs a hotel in Newry.Kathleen Thompson Largey died of cancer in 1979.She was a true Irish patriot.A great lady.
just replying to ur comment on k largey a year ago. ur right about her maden name it was mccready. not mccreedy. no offence mate. kathleen would be my second cousin and my da's first cousin. she is laid to rest in milltown cemtery belfast down
beside the republican plot, right beside maura drumm, in the same row. just though id put the record stright. no offence.
Soldierbhoy I suppose you would be as well raving here as in bed, I am not in the least interested in De Valera or Ian Paisley. Have another look at my post which you find so upsetting and you will find that including a LOCAL hero was the done thing in this song. Got it now.
Think we picked each other wrong mate. The song is amazing and Kathleen is one of the best i've heard. The reason Dev was replaced is because he's classed as a traitor, and your post didn't upset me. Everyone is entitled to their own veiw.
nonsense, we are talking about the same man arnt we? De'Valera the founder of The Fianna Fáil Party, the last commander to surender in 1916,the man who wrote the Irish constiution because that man was no traitor sir...I prefer the version wit De'Valera's name included
Sold out the North...Republican sell out, no better than Collins, though he planned to atleast try and get the north back. Dev, did nothing for us Northerners.
Mick Collins did not sell out the north. He was under orders from the traitor dev.Mick did his best and is one of the greatest leaders the republican movement has had, then to be murdered by the same traitor.
Can you tell me..When she says. Though your task be hard. ....Leads us! Its usualy De valera. But She says some other Word I cant make out. Can anyone tell me?
Sure... it's Jimmy Steele, a Belfast Republican. De Valera doesn't go down too well in Republican circles as he is considered a traitor. en dot wikipedia dot org /wiki/Jimmy_Steele
Legion of The Rearguard is the official anthem of Fianna Fail - The Republican Party, but Devalera has been replaced by Jimmy Steele by Sinn Fein, which is ironic considering their own leaders are following the same path that Devalera came round to in 1926. This also happens with "The Foggy Dew", where Dev is replaced by Cathal Burgha, even though they were on the same side during the civil war! Stick to The Clancy Bros and Tommy Makem version, which is also on Youtube
My uncles favourite song, RIP Kathleen and all those murderered by the British Army, Ballymurphy 1971, Justice is ours xxx

It`s good for an old-timer to get history lessons from the wet-nappy brigade. Ye bhoy ye.

The history books tell the story about Dev. He sold out his former comrades, He doesn't deserve to be remembered as an irish hero.
soldierbhoy5004 3 years ago
I have heard it sung away back in the 1940s and De Valera was replaced with the local hero.

Dev is considered a traitor who executed his own people - hence the reason he omitted from Republican songs in favour of other prominent Republicans.
