I have this movie on dvd,and many people say it's a terrible movie buts it not so bad considering the movies that come out today.I'm not surprised Irving Azoff produced the music because the soundtrack has Linda Ronstadt,Steely Dan,the Eagles,Joe Walsh which were all signed by David Geffen's label or either managed by him and Azoff, whom worked for Geffen at that time.
My older brother turned me on to this movie in 1978 . . . . I watched it on VHS everyday that summer . . .best music ever . . . FM radio was KING back then!!!!!
I still have the soundtrack of this movie on cassett and it has some great 70's tunes on it ,only trouble is instead of the original recordings they were edited to save space on the tape I guess, but still I hate it when they do that.
I never saw this but my family used to have the LP. I dunno. I kind of mentally missed this era of music. I never had a yacht rock period of my life. I went from liking Broadway musicals in my early teens to liking The Ramones in my mid teens. Bottom line is this music seemed OLD to me even when I was young, and I did not understand the 15 year olds around me who thought The Eagles were "cool", since The Eagles seemed like something my parents would like. Oh, wait. They did.
Z93 Classic Rock ATL 96 Rock ATL were stations like the one on FM.Van Halen got drunk, stoned ,and partied one night in 1984 at 96 Rock live on the air. They were good free spirit stations . Not to many of them left
Back when local DJ's were live. Not syndicated across country. They played almost anything(deep cuts that werent hit singles ie Court of Crimson King,Free Four,Black Cow )etc. Stupid Fcc Michael Powell and there Clear Channel suck!!!!!
"Crystal Age"? What dumb nuts wrote the copy for his trailer? There never was such an age, in music. Silver age, maybe. But not Crystal or Diamond. The dope must have done their research via some marriage anniversary gift chart. Besides that, the jewelry industry obsoleted all that. When the made nearly everything a "diamond" anniversary. Including High School graduations. I wonder when was the "paper age" or "wood age" of music? Dumb 19th century ideas, don't apply now.
this movie trailer is different from the way the movie really is. like the beginning sequence is different and the music played in the trailer never was in the movie
I like this movie because I love 70s music. The problem with it was that the scenes were not explained well enough. It was hard to understand why they were happy or sad. Brandon and Mull were good but some of the other actors seemed to be miscast. But I still like it.
I'm not sure you're correct. Most of the characters like Doc, do explain why they're sad. It was usually because they were being replaced or their shows rescheduled.
FM has been shoing on VH1 classick for the past month. I got a chance to record it on my DVR and it won't leave. Not the best movie ever (ending is a little weak) but working at a radio station was my dream job. Plus, i'ts nice to hear that great 70s rock in its original form, not compressed and overprocessed like MP3s or current radio.
I grew up in the 70's and remember seeing this in the theatre. The movie is no longer avaiable in circulation. DVD was on Amazon marketplace at $100+ which is outrageous! I bought a new VHS at $39.99 on Amazon in August 09. It is now $64+ for used VHS and two sellers have new VHS's priced at $638.00. YIKES!
I'm glad I got mine when I did. The movie wasn't quite as good as I remembered it but worth the money and time spent watching it again. Great songs and memories!
And yet it had some damn good music. Especially the SoCal scene with stuff by The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Doobie Brothers, Poco, Linda Ronstadt, John David Souther. This was music made to enjoy. Believe me, it was much better than Punk/New Wave.
But don't take my word for it, ask your parents, LOL.
I worked at a theater showing the film and others from 1977-78, and can tell you the audience didn't like FM, and some people laughed openly during the Alex Keras performance here. Later he successfully went to TV, but this was a more serious thing for him.
The film is just a mish-mash of things put to music that isn't very good...Jimmy Buffet??
The BJ under the desk is the best thing about FM!
I love this movie...And...I totally AGREE with you! How can they be against commercialism in the movie, when they (the DJs) play some of the most commercial music of the '70s? Boston? The Eagles? Even Linda Rondstadt for god sake!!! In truth, this film was a great advertisement for all the artists involved. And their boss would've sacked the them too. Where was the R&B??
@WestVirginiaRebel I understand the logic of your question, but at the time punk was only big in England. Most American DJs did not think punk was big enough to be played. It seemed to be all attitude and no talent like guitarist that could only play 2 chords. They saw it as a novelty or passing fad.
@agfagaevart The Program Director wasn't against commercials. He was against implementing them in a way that diluted the quality of the product. He even toasted the sales weasel with wine to "quality and the profits it brings". He knew what would happen if the product were destroyed while creating the profit. They would call it Clear Channel.
You're right about the R&B. Odd that it was omitted.
Though I loved this movie. I came to realize how flawed the plot was, years later. Most radio stations are owned by corporations that kiss up to the Defense Industry (some ARE that industry) and US military machine, to get advertising dollars. This movie shows one station bulked at the recruitment ads. But stops short of an anti-war stance. And its owner comes to their rescue. NEVER WOULD HAPPEN. DJs aren't that brave, ethical, or stupid. And station owners would never take such a stand either.
When this 1st came out, I was stuck at some desolate Air Base, in the middle of the sage brush belt. And FM stations were super scarce. I could barely afford a decent stereo, and not much music (only LPs then). This movie had some much GREAT music, it was incredible. It was nice swimming in fine 70s Rock for 104 minutes. As a kid I use to visit a small town radio station. So this film really struck a cord with me.
The one thing that worries me is if they were to rerelease this on DVD they'd probably do what they did to WKRP in Cincinatti.Take out all the original music and replace it with production music. :-P
This movie WAS out on DVD, back in 2000. And only briefly. All the music rights licensing probably killed it, after a few months. They even pulled the unsold discs from stores, and from rental shops. Unlike other old movies that were left to fade away slowly, on VHS and disc. The music industry really restricted the retail lifespan of this movie. As if the songs it contained would cost them dearly if the discs stayed in stock. Oh please! Get real RIAA. All they do is make us hate to buy songs.
I agree with clamdraggin, the tv series WKRP IN CINCINNATI is very close in terms of storylines to that of the film ,FM. Even the wild DJ is a very close resemblance to Dr Johnny Fever. Hell, even the program director looks like the actor who was in the tv show.
I thought I was the only one that notice that guy in the beard looks like Gary Sandy aka Andy Travis. Even though WKRP was based on in a real life station somewhere in GA I think they took some of the elements from this movie and put it in the sticom.
Love this movie! The story is timeless! Remove the turntables, reels, and cart machines and put in an operating system and a bunch of people who can track four stations at once, and it's still about profitability! This movie is nothing more than pure fun, especially for radio folk, who have to remember that this is an awesome business, whether it's 1978 or 2009!
I saw the mvie in the seventies on a double bill with Jaws. Damn this is a good film. And best movie soundtrack of all time. Didn't they base the sitcom WKRP on this mvie?
@hamtrak Oh Yaz, my friend, she sure was! Check out the clips of her on Playboy After Dark or Johnny Cash's TV show in 1970, she's even hotter there! That teen actress Selena Gomez now looks exactly like she did back in 1970. Man I feel so old!
i cant find any available dvd of this film unfortunately..also i am trying to find out the name of one particular track which is playing away in the radio studio approx 10 mts into film, I looked up the list of songs played in the film but it aint listed there!Aaargh! Can anybody help me out, its so long since I saw the film that i cant give an exact time of the track being played but i recall it was a minor disco hit in the 70's,
is this some movie version of wkrp? i fully expected cleavon little to say "excuse me while I whip this out!" a truly forgettable movie, but at least steely dan got a great song out of it!
Watched this in the 80's (can't find the VHS tape I recorded it on though), found that my dad had the soundtrack on vinyl. (still listen to it, even put Linda on minidisc) and even fulfilled my dream for a couple of years: worked as a dj on local fm station. Thanks for posting this.
I was only in junior high when I saw this movie. I will never forget how riveting the music was. I still try to find the soundtrack listing just to feel those goosebumps on my arms. AWESOME!
i was stationed in bamberg germany from 77 to 80. i remember going to german theater with my girlfriend and seeing FM with english subtitles. great movie for the time, the music was perfect, and linda ronstadt was sooo hot.
Hey, big thanks for posting this trailer. FM came out when I was in high school and I saw it 3 times. This movie had the best dolby surround I have ever heard. When Steely Dan kicked in at the beginning you just leaned back and went, "Whoaaa!!!" The theater played it loud too and that made it even better. I still have the album too. There are a few albums I have held on to over the years and FM is one of them. I treat them like gold now. Q-Sky rules !!!!
until the riaa gets its head out of its behind I refuse to purchase any cds at all. I will download on p2p till the cows come home or till stuff like this and WKRP get released correctly. Maybe if we all tell the Riaa to get a clue or we wont buy maybe they will listen.
The actual song used during the first few minutes of the movie was "Life in the Fast Lane". The royalities for the song used in this trailer was probably cheaper. And that's why this movie is near impossible to find on DVD now. Music royalities for all those great 70s songs, killed all sales and rentals. Thank you RIAA. Thank you for absolutely f-ing nothing!
@youtub3k One other reason is that the Eagles manager was a producer on this, then removed his name from the credits but still retains an ownership of the film and soundtrack rights

I dont know if "FM" inspired WKRP
but I do know that WKRP was partly based
on the exploits of (Quixie in Dixie)
WQXI in Atlanta , and Gerald Blum
who was either Program Director or
Manager at WQXI. One episode of
WKRP in particular, where turkeys are dropped from a helicopter at a mall was inspired by WQXI really dropping live
turkeys at a mall as a Thanksgiving
promotion (no one knew the turkeys couldnt fly)

until the riaa gets its head out of its behind I refuse to purchase any cds at all. I will download on p2p till the cows come home or till stuff like this and WKRP get released correctly. Maybe if we all tell the Riaa to get a clue or we wont buy maybe they will listen.

so sad that this movie eerily predicted the Clear Channel hell in the 21st century

Saw "FM" when I was in middle school, it was a GREAT movie the music was second to none. To this day, Martin Mull and him sucking his thumb kills me.

Pretty sure it is.
