I can tell you, I cut the news watching out of my life. Pure negativity. I don't feel guilty about doing that. I see the big picture and I know my talking about it isn't going to help no one. I vote, but i feel much the same way you do. That does not mean I'm not active in doing other things to help people. Just will say it was one of the best decisions I have made in my life.:)
he movie cannot hurt you, as is in poverty cannot touch your core Self. Enriching the Self can include important things for the Mind (learning, knowledge, understanding). The potential is there that emotions and the mind absorb negativity, which isnt good- but at the level of Self, you are not affected. It passes through you but does not become you unless you choose that. news should be used as information for taking away necessary facts, but depression is something to be managed.
Check out my video response. on seeing what fast food nation is about I admit I kinda want to see it. It was made for the right reasons. But the flip side is all the miserable pictures of an often frightening and horrifying world, and that's what the Elliot Smith song deals with so scorchingly. Though in all honesty I think he's talking more about the portrayal of vicious, violent, and false images as being good or desirable. The things that the ego can lie to the self about.
The movie actually was the sort of thing that normally would appeal to me too. It was a shock to be so upset but more and more I find I'm loosing the ability to deal with painful imagery. Plus I read the book which the movie is loosely based on but it struck me as interesting how easily we can read facts and figures in nonfic which then become so distasteful when they are illustrated in "real life". Makes me wonder how much desensitizing has gone on in me over the last 30 years...
I advise definatly looking at the darkside of things but apply positive spirituality to the problems you encounter. You seem like a meditator, meditate and then think about your problems, you will come to some positive conclusions which may even allow you to stand up for what you believe out of your local society. Big thinkers get Big results.
the pathway to unconditional enlightment is straight and narrow, therefore it's best to avoid things that don't bring you closer to that. it's just a circus going on where it leads to just more suffering. A movie i'd recommend is "The Big Blue".
