Mr.Olson was Mr.Gleason's announcer..on "Jackie Gleason & His American Scene Magazine"in NYC..before he went with "The Jackie Gleason Show"to Miami Beach,Fl.
Thanks for posting this. Johnny O was always my favorite announcer and it's great to get to hear a warm-up, which I think was an important function of announcers that the general public overlooked.
So great was Johnny O at warming up the audience that Jackie Gleason flew him down to Florida from NY every weekend just to announce Gleason's hit variety show. Johnny would intro: "From the sun and fun capital of the world, Miami Beach, we bring you... The Jackie Gleason Show! And awaaaay we GO!!!" With that, the audience would go absolutely nuts. All the others mentioned are great, but they would tell you, Johnny was the king.
For those who don't know this, current announcer Rich Fields attended a taping of the show in 1978 (when he was 18), and asked Johnny O how he could get his job. Johnny then let Rich say "Come on down!" into his mic. Little did young Mr. Fields know that it would be part of his job some 25 years later. Ironic, isn't it?
@yolichka1 Which clown announcer are you referring to? I'm not sure if they have picked a permanent announcer yet, but Drew Carey is getting better as host.
@bluebear1985 Legend has it that @ that very taping, Mr. Olson gave Rich Fields some advice: "Don't get Barker mad.". How cool it must've been for Rich to have met his idol! Johnny Olson was definitely one of a kind! Johnny is missed to this very day. He was a broadcasting legend, for sure!
How did you manage to do this? Amazing! Well anyway, I went to see a taping of the Price is Right three years later (1978) and Johnny Olsen warmed up the audience. I remember them laying the song Disco Inferno by the Trammps in the studio just to get us warmed up.
Technically not, but from what I have read, there was originally going to be just a weekly syndicated nighttime "Price is Right" with Dennis James; the CBS daytime version starring Bob Barker started out as a sort of afterthought...and ended up as an institution.
I heard that they didn't even film a pilot for it. They got it sold to CBS by having a pitch film shot about how it would be updated for the 70s, hosted by Dennis James and Mark Goodson.
Rich...that's the current announcer, right? Don't have much time to watch Price is Right nowadays, but if that's him, he doesn't hold a candle to the likes of Olsen or Rod Roddy.
I was also lucky enough to see Johnny Olsen in New York during the 1960s-early 1970s. Johnny was not only real, but he was colorful and a real class act.
I also had the privilege of interviewing Johnny for a class project in a college mass culture course. It would be great if a full version of this warm-up were available.
We got to expericence Johnny O here in New York years before L.A. snatched him away (just like the Dodgers, The Tonight Show, etc.). His warmup here is so much like he used to do for The Match Game, To Tell the Truth, Play Your Hunch, What's My Line?, et al. Believe me, he was for REAL. What a great, funny guy, classy, nice guy. Rich Fields? Like a colorless, indistinct piece of artificial sweetener. Fits right in with the Fremantle style. Where are you, Mr. Goodson? (R.I.P.)
Boy, I would have loved to have been able to attend a taping of TPIR with Johnny Olsen being the announcer. He sounds very lively indeed! RIP, Johnny Olsen!
@TerryT1976 I cerainly wouldn't attend a live taping of TPIR today, but I would, however, love to be present and walking around the CBS Television City building because of so much history that was made on TV got filmed in there.
i know it sounds bad but watching Rich's warm-up made me realize he sounds kinda fake to me...i like Johnny's better cos he just sounds so genuine and stuff, whereas Rich's enthusiasm sounds weird and almost forced. Meh.
Johnny Olson is so funny!
