Wow, I hadn't heard this song before today! It came on the radio whilst I was doing housework and I was dancing around my apartment. Tune! Love it when I discover a song as amazing as this. Happened a couple of years back when I heard 'The Snake' by Al Wilson for the first time on the radio. So rare that the radio ever plays a decent tune now! Etta James, truly sensational.
@lac9252 That contestant on American Idol was Lauren Turner. She's a HUGE FAN of Etta's and hopes to bring her the recognition she deserves. Follow her on twitter if you want @Lauren_E_Turner.
Etta's father was the great Minnesota Fats professional pool player. Who for most of her childhood into adulthood would have nothing to do with her. That plays out in the movie Chess Records.
"Seven Day Fool," a Motown song, co-written by Berry Gordy, Jr.,apparently for Etta, as this Jobete Music published song was never recorded by any Motown act. Etta had Motown connections in recording 3 Motown songs: "All I Could Do Was Cry," "Money," and 'Seven Day Fool." Etta knew the Gordy family, as well as Marvin Gaye, then a member of The Moonglows, labelmates of Etta's at Chess Records. Etta briefly considered leaving Chess for Motown, didn't, as Leonard Chess "was like a father to me."

@Amysing555 I actually think its a good thing that singers like Christina cover these songs, because a lot of this younger generation is ignorant about the past of music, and all they know is audio tunes..So if after seeing Christina or Beyonce perform a cover they go searching for the original and that introduces them to the greats. Hi, I was curious about your comment. What does it mean? Thanks:) BOP
Etta was sensational and nobody including Beyonce or Christina could capture the soulfulness and styling in her voice. Etta is one of a kind....an original. She had a sound quality in her voice that is magical.
@HandwhistlerBen Well I will disagree with you on the Christina part since Etta herself says she loves Christina doing her stuff, and the new release clip of Christina singing "Somethings got a hold on me" is damn good, I hear what you are saying though
@HandwhistlerBen : Yeah she all that but she is also a butt head. I’ve lost lots of respect for her since I heard her talking sooooooooo bad about Beyonce. She is jealous
AH LONGEVITY ...We must revere our national treasures and Missss Etta James is at the top of the list tas a[oster child for survival. I already knew Janis, Christina and many others copied Etta's style...but do I hear Amy Winehouse on this track??
To comments abt Etta's race..she was born to a 14 yr old African Amer girl in Los Angeles in 1930's (1938?) Her mom told her her father was a caucasian pool player...much antagonism tween the 2 of them over her never giving more info abt the father. Suffered MUCH in her 71 yrs..heroin, mental hospitalization..still belting em out!

(i think the blonde is fly...)our generations are a bunch of copycats compared to these founders..i agree with you & love the blues definitley should be honored more
@disconnected84 Totally agree! She could be green or blue for all I care, hell she could be green/blue, dressed in a sack of potatoes and singing the ABC's but with that voice and soul I would still enjoy it!
James and Aretha Franklin have somethings in common. They both can sing and they both were jumbo sized. I do not know how Etta can go from jumbo to skinny. Must be the you know what...
don't worry Etta: Jully sounds like Christina and we don't need another one............Etta still rules and always will because todays artists try like hell to copy her.
well darlin' in 1955 when i first saw her...her hair was light light brown and she was always light complected.....and this was before bleach.........but you know better cuz of her eyebrows....
Actually back in the day, when first started wearing blonde she was wearing a wig., sweet
Yes she bleached her hair later, but her natural hair color was a lighter brown what they called back in the day a "sandy color".
And yes your eyebrows can be a different color than the other hair on your body naturally, some people have eyebrows that are two shades darker than their natural hair color.
As far as I know that was eyebrow pencil. To darken her eyebrows and lengthen them. I think it was just to enhance the 'cat eye' look she had with the black eyeliner.
This is to Mongo 76......... whom i have children older than he and show more respect. what the damn diff does it make if she was natural blonde or not. women color their hair all the time.....what the ass diff does that make.
she has made her name and still going strong....what the hell have you done? you have neither her money or fame.....so at least show some respect as i know your Mama or someone probably taught your sorry ass. you talk like 13 instead of 30 something.
i think she must really love her man because i wouldnt scrub nobody's floor except my own unless im getting paid for doing it but htis song is the bomb like.... tick... tick.... love it sevenday fool for her music and on a monday im gonna listen and on a tuesday im gonna sing it and on a wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday , sunday gonna love it sing it and listen to it awsome !!!!!!
you're damn right, she's a legend!! she went thru a bad time, being a druggie and all. but i think she was very lovely when she was younger....and who gives a shit what she looked like? she could sing her ass off!
What are you talking bout?? She's not even on drugs there. She did drugs when she was young then went to rehab. She just looks like that now because she's older plus she had that surgery whereit took alot of her weigh. She still pretty to me. Get the facts not opinions on Etta.
Actually Etta was on heroin for basically all of the 60's and part of the 70's she didn't go to rehab until the late 70's After she was about to go to prison for bad checks. Her husband actually took the rap for her and did 10 yrs. I think it's something wbout the people who started out with johnny otis. Etta and Esther phillips both ended up on heroin. Then too all the young women who started out with a bunch of blues men for some reason ended up on heroin or some other drug.
Wow!! Where did you get this info from?? Is it in her book/?? I'm question you about it because I would like to learn more about her. I think alot of her personal blues come from her father not accepting her plus being mixed had to be a lil hard. But she started in the church and Im not sure what went wrong from then........
From her book and from interviews with her. I need to correct smthng, she actually didn't get clean until the early 80. In her bk she says her mom had a guy sent to prison for paternity and when the judge looked at the man, her mom and a blondebaby(her) he dismissed the case b/c he knew two blk prnts couldnt have a light blonde baby. I question blonde being her natural hair clor though b/c if it were naturally blonde, she wouldn't have had to dye it blonde. and it was definitely dyed inthe 60's
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I am very well aware of biological processes. If there is light complexion in the line, it can show up later IF the co parent has the same RECESSIVE gene. Being the child of a biracial mother born with blue eyes and blonde hair I am quite aware of how traits can be inherited. My great grandfather had one blue eye and one brown one. My point about etta was that it was wishful thinking on her part when she said she was mistaken for a white woman up close by a PO. She could NEVER pass for white!
Etta James most likely got white genes from Her white Father. That will happen.I'm not aware of Her ever wishing she was white, although She was mistaken for white when she was younger.
Actually Minesota Fats was basically rumored to be her father. I don't think her mother really knew the identity. I wouldn't say she wished to be white, but she did have a problem with racism in her career and not being accepted by fats as she thought he was her father. The incident i mentioned was in her book once an adult and she was touring. As an adult, she was not passable as a white woman by someone standing within 3 feet of her. She is light skinned yes but doesnt look causasian.
oh is she? hmmm no wander........ u know what i think .... the thing is this.. the more u get old the more u get immature or lose ur mind u know. i think that's probably what happen to her. the only thing she got is voice, beside that nothing else she has. she is tooooo ugly. she should mccain's wife
I dont care if she insulted the man who I personally wanted for president, shes still a damn good singer. And the fact that she can so openly insult our country's leader is one of the great perks of living in what is called a 'free country'
I agree with you. Though I think she was out of line for what she said and has no tact, it is her right as a citizen of the U.S. to say whatever she wants to say.
Etta James is a mixed race person with an African American mother and a white father who is reported to be the famed pool shooter Minnesota Fats. I believe he denied his parentage initially, and I am not sure whether he ever changed his story, but if you put Etta's picture side by side with his, I don't know that a paternity test is even necessary.
I don't care for artists F -N with perfection with covers ESPECIALLY with the likes of Etta James, takes alot a balls to even attempt it.!!!!! But I have to admit,I do like July Blacks version of this. at least she had the respect to keep it close to the original.
To me Etta's version cannot be touched, but respect everyones opinion, at least a new generation are listening to the the music us old soulies love, it would be a boring world if we all thought the same way
jully's version is better. people just like to give all the credit to the person who did the original song, but jully's voice is actually better in my opinion.
@qqrk1372 Well her mother was of African descent but apparently her father was of European descent, Italian to specific. Just looking at her face can tell you that she is not your "average" African American. To describe human beings by colour (Canadian spelling :D) must be real ignoranace. One race; the human race!
@ahersi29 Your "one race" prattle isn't just naive it's a COP OUT! people are different and that's fine. Different races, religions, ways of life. DEAL with it. Don't just bury your head in the sand.
@qqrk1372 Different religions... yes! Different ways of life...hell yes! Different races... NO! There isn't such thing as 'races' as there truly is only one race... Sorry 2 interupt! ;-)
@jamz88888888 I came to this page to listen to a wonderful singer. Not to educate you little kids who want to pretend we're all the same because you're afraid of being different. Grow up. (And don't bother sending me a response. It will NOT be read.)
Thank You for Burning My Heart!! R.I.P.

Come on people! You lost RESPECT for a legend because she wasn't happy that someone ELSE got to sing HER song at such a big event??
She has every right to be upset. She seemed cool with it when Beyonce was protraying her in a movie, but then Beyonce took it too far.
Etta should have had the honor of preforming her own song for the president.

What are you talking bout?? She's not even on drugs there. She did drugs when she was young then went to rehab. She just looks like that now because she's older plus she had that surgery whereit took alot of her weigh. She still pretty to me. Get the facts not opinions on Etta.
jovta22 2 years ago 2
Actually Etta was on heroin for basically all of the 60's and part of the 70's she didn't go to rehab until the late 70's After she was about to go to prison for bad checks. Her husband actually took the rap for her and did 10 yrs. I think it's something wbout the people who started out with johnny otis. Etta and Esther phillips both ended up on heroin. Then too all the young women who started out with a bunch of blues men for some reason ended up on heroin or some other drug.
Mongo76 2 years ago
Wow!! Where did you get this info from?? Is it in her book/?? I'm question you about it because I would like to learn more about her. I think alot of her personal blues come from her father not accepting her plus being mixed had to be a lil hard. But she started in the church and Im not sure what went wrong from then........
jovta22 2 years ago
From her book and from interviews with her. I need to correct smthng, she actually didn't get clean until the early 80. In her bk she says her mom had a guy sent to prison for paternity and when the judge looked at the man, her mom and a blondebaby(her) he dismissed the case b/c he knew two blk prnts couldnt have a light blonde baby. I question blonde being her natural hair clor though b/c if it were naturally blonde, she wouldn't have had to dye it blonde. and it was definitely dyed inthe 60's

Even with two black parents....if there's white or light complexion somewhere in along the line it can show up anywhere. Basic biology. lol

Mongo76 2 years ago
Etta James most likely got white genes from Her white Father. That will happen.I'm not aware of Her ever wishing she was white, although She was mistaken for white when she was younger.
Tree409 2 years ago
Actually Minesota Fats was basically rumored to be her father. I don't think her mother really knew the identity. I wouldn't say she wished to be white, but she did have a problem with racism in her career and not being accepted by fats as she thought he was her father. The incident i mentioned was in her book once an adult and she was touring. As an adult, she was not passable as a white woman by someone standing within 3 feet of her. She is light skinned yes but doesnt look causasian.

yes her book is awesome its called rage to survive the story of etta james very enthusiastic read man check it out u love it

I dont care if she insulted the man who I personally wanted for president, shes still a damn good singer. And the fact that she can so openly insult our country's leader is one of the great perks of living in what is called a 'free country'
JackieMagenta 3 years ago 7

MandyMayzy 3 years ago
yeah i tripped out when i saw a pic too. i didnt pictre a black woman. but she looks hard core mixed white or something.

To me Etta's version cannot be touched, but respect everyones opinion, at least a new generation are listening to the the music us old soulies love, it would be a boring world if we all thought the same way
twostrokedowse 3 years ago 7
agreed. i wasn't putting this version down, it's a good song!
michmushmoo 3 years ago
Jully has a good voice, but she lacks the soul
U could tell Etta lived the song, while Jully just sang it.
that's the problm with the singers our days
kwalis 3 years ago
jully's version is better. people just like to give all the credit to the person who did the original song, but jully's voice is actually better in my opinion.

Etta James is also Black. (Ignorance must be bliss.)
qqrk1372 3 years ago 11
@qqrk1372 Well her mother was of African descent but apparently her father was of European descent, Italian to specific. Just looking at her face can tell you that she is not your "average" African American. To describe human beings by colour (Canadian spelling :D) must be real ignoranace. One race; the human race!
ahersi29 1 year ago 4
@ahersi29 GROW UP CHILD! Grow up.
qqrk1372 1 year ago
@ahersi29 Your "one race" prattle isn't just naive it's a COP OUT! people are different and that's fine. Different races, religions, ways of life. DEAL with it. Don't just bury your head in the sand.
qqrk1372 1 year ago
@qqrk1372 I accept your opinion, now let's both get back to why we came here; to listien to an awesome song! :D

@ahersi29 Right on! ;-)
qqrk1372 1 year ago
@qqrk1372 Different religions... yes! Different ways of life...hell yes! Different races... NO! There isn't such thing as 'races' as there truly is only one race... Sorry 2 interupt! ;-)

@jamz88888888 I came to this page to listen to a wonderful singer. Not to educate you little kids who want to pretend we're all the same because you're afraid of being different. Grow up. (And don't bother sending me a response. It will NOT be read.)
