At any rate, about as real as one can make it and still deal with the reality that role-players do know it's still acting, and you can't control for such anticipation. Bravo Yeager and company. You can continue to bring cutting edge training solutions.
In other words, good as training like this is, it ultimately becomes a game of 'gotchya'.......however, if you turned around and bust the role-player in the nose and break it (when he's not expecting contact) I GUARANTEE that element of surprise would throw off even the 'gotchya' playing opponent. Not that we can do that, but it's an example of the real world creeping in. A quick eldow that breaks the cartilege of the nose, followed by contact wounds to the face, is better than spin and shot.
I don't CCW and never will, but it seems like a course like this should be mandatory for shall-issue states. Not necessarily to test for judgment, but to give holders a taste of what it's like to shoot (or not shoot) under extreme pressure. Seems like an ounce of this would be worth a pound of range marksmanship.
The video makes it look like there is more shooting than there actually is. A guy handing over his wallet and walking away alive makes for a boring video.
The scenarios are designed to make you think. In most there is no correct answer. For instance; you walk into an alley and find a guy with a gun threatening to execute a guy on his knees. Do you intervene? There is no correct answer. This class gives you a chance to think, talk, and walk through your options.
Looks interesting. As a resident of Texas and a long time CHL holder I have run through some of these in my mind before. I carry often but I hopefully never have to use my weapon unless its to save a life.
As matthho said (am I the only person who reads that as "Math Ho"?), not all the scenarios are shooting scenarios. The video makes it look like that because, really, who wants to watch a video of a guy in a paintball mask walking past an ATM because he doesn't like the look of the people loitering around it.
Boring.
One thing to note. Watch the role player at about 3:35. His gun jams, and he instinctively clears it while running away. That is why you need to take Fighting Pistol too.
This video gave me the impression that all this class was doing was shoving you into a situation that you couldn't possibly win.
I'm sure thats not the case, but I personally can't see a way of getting out of half of these situations alive even to a trained specialist.
Not to mention drawing your CCW would just be a bad idea in most. (for example, two people facing you with guns drawn like at 0:58. Drawing your weapon isnt exactly the best of ideas.)
I was one of the role players in this class. You are quite right that drawing was not a good idea in that situation. Something that the students learned the hard way :-)
The marker rounds that we used hurt, a lot. The class was seven months ago, and my marks have not faded. I'm starting to think that they are permanent. Which isn't stopping me from role playing for another class next month.
Cool, but there were a lot of situations where drawing your gun wouldn't be a good idea... and why were people who complying being executed? What gain does the bad guy have for killing you after he's gotten all your money?
It can be hard to see, but the vast majority of those seemingly being compliant are being shot because they are going for their gun. On this vid only one clip shows shooting after full compliance and that is to teach a separate lesson.
Ahhh, that makes more sense. did they allow for physical contact? Seems a lot of times in this vid, grabbing the bad guy's gun before drawing would work better than standing there like a gunfighter.
No physical contact by students. (There were people in that class who could have broken me in half.) The class is about using your mind, not your body.
@CustardTheDragonBoy Something that does represent some limitation. Simply drawing the gun and firing limits one. The ability to clear the other persons weapon off line, then putting contact distance wounds on target, is a better choice. Still, it's far better than the average training that many folks get. More contact would be a good addition, however. Part of being able to use your mind, is learning to use ALL the tools available, and not getting tool specific locked in, i.e. the gun.
@milspecmonkey Part of that is role-player anticipation. As a role-player, knowing this is a CCW/Weapons holder class, you KNOW that at some point the other person is going for a gun, so you are simply playing a game of anticipation waiting for your reaction. In the really real world, 999 out of 1,000 the bad guy would not have picked this victim if he didn't think he was unarmed, thereby the belief that the other person is unarmed is a real world advantage not had in training.
There are NUMEROUS cases where someone was robbed and were compliant. Once the robber had what he/they wanted, they shot the victim either to eliminate a witness or in even worse instances... just for the thrill.
Lots of bad guys dont care. They are taking care of the person that could id them or even come back for other reasons. Then again some people are just cold blooded killers .
Why is not always known but we know that it does happen. Look up Lane Bryant Murders where 6 women were shot after complying and 5 died, the 6th survived by playing dead. Also look up The Retired Marine and The Robbers by Massad Ayoob:
The robber shoots the victims between 10 and 20% of the time even if they surrender the money when they have all the money and dont leave, but rather take you to the back room and tell you 'lie down,' the chances of then being shot are very high.
Not all scenarios have to have shooting solutions. Some are shoots, some are no-shoots, and some can go either way depending on how the scenario progresses.
Not all actions by bad guys have to have a gain for them to do it.
@shodan1028 Getting rid of the witnesses. It doesn't take long to search the internet for news stories of cooperative victims who were simply EXECUTED! Everyone should remember Tookie Williams, the reformed Gang member executed a couple years back.......his victim, a convenience store employee, cooperated completely, laid politely down in the back room, and was promptly shoot in the back of the head, prone, with a 12 gauge shotgun. Anyone who believes compliance is life is a fool.
Brilliant video. I think most people hate to role play scenarios - but you learn a hell of a lot! It's the only safe way to be taken out of your comfort zone. The school looks truly amazing. Once again, great video.
@ 3:00 the man obviously is hiding something! You're training to watch for behavior like this, of course i'd pull my glock on him as well... then the instructor turns to "What the hell man? HE'S GOT A GUN!" well... just as long as the creep with his hand behind his back keeps his distance we're good
From the quick video it looks like it covers some encounter that will most likely happen to some hope fully never encounter, from just walking down the street to full blown home invasions.
I have watched some other Force On Force DVD and many videos on YouTube, and so far this is the cream of the crop! I really mean it James Yeager and team bring it real, or in the video states SO YOU BETTER BRING THE HOT SAUCE LOVE IT
Its about time that some one has the balls to put this class together. Love to sign up for the class and fully agree with the description and I think ever CCW holder should attend the class leave it up to Tactical Response to think outside the box on some of the scenarios.
I have some concerns with some of the training methods shown here. Especially in the beginning and towards the end of the video. People that comply are often executed, people that resist are often killed, and people that run away are often killed. Jesus, what it's teaching is that you're just going to die if you have a CCW on you.
Some of the other training bits are thought provoking and should be covered more for CCP holders... But teaching people that sometimes you're just gonna die is stupid
This video is meant to show topics covered and not be actual lessons. It is not a glamor reel as some of the best lessons are learned by making mistakes in training. Students are shown reacting with both good and bad results, and sometimes none at all. As with all Tactical Response classes, you are taught to fight to the very end and not "just die". If you take the class all will make a lot more sense.
Very cool. There is no replacement for good situational training like this. Being accurate against paper targets with little to no stress is one thing, wait till your target is firing back at you or even worse started firing first.
looks like an excellent class.

This is great training.
And all those questions were good ones to ask oneself BEFORE you ever get into the situation.
I'm big on thinking through all of the "what if's".
It's never like the real thing, but simulation will give your motor skills a fighting chance in the real world.
