i got a new "gaming system" last weak and i wanted to know... did i get the right parts for the games of today and possibly the next 2 - 3 years?

My System :

CPU AMD FX6100 6X core 3.3GHZ

GPU AMD SAPPHIRE HD 6950 2GB GDDR5

8GB OF RAM (for some reason 3.25 usable)

and a 990xa-ud3 motherboard

@chrisexon9 Not really. Since it's an APU processor, you could play some light games with that, but if you're looking for mainstream gaming, you should consider Dual Core 3.2GHz to Quad Core 2.4GHz (cores > clock speed in most cases) and over 4GB of RAM.

Your graphics processor is also quite essential too. Nowadays, you shouldn't have much less than 1GB of graphics memory in your card. Your processor has an inbuilt graphics card which does well for HD media, but isn't quite enough for games.

@alvinsuc It's probably good. Same processor as me. It all depends on everything else you have. It's not just the processor and RAM that count, it's the whole system working together that does.

@mTkCr3w The reason you only see (nearly) 3GB out of all 4GB is that Windows can only see 3GB in 32-bit mode, regardless of the amount installed. You can see more of it by using PAE (Physical Address Extension), but it's far better to install a 64-bit version of Windows. So, in the short run, you're stuck with 3GB I'm afraid.

Hey mate on my windows i am running 32 bit and i have 6gb ram installed but it says its only using 2.42gb so would i times the 6gb by 1024 and times that by 2 or times the 2.42gb by 1024 and then times that by 2.

@xKochy Hmm, it's such a shame to be wasting over 3GB of RAM there. As it stands, you'd use 2.42*1024*2, but I'd try using Physical Address Extension to see if you can unlock more RAM using 36 address lanes rather than 32.

@Trackercx D: is probably a backup disk that your manufacturer put on. Unless you use it regularly for storage, it's not really worth defragging.

If you are using an SSD drive, I don't recommend using a Page File set on these drives. Also, having a Page File may not speed up your computer as opposed to having Physical Ram. Physical Ram is much faster than a hard drive and much cheaper.

@FixThePC you don't need to defragment SSD's and when people talk about the write cycle limits it's not true. the ssd saves to a different part of itself each time. so it doesn't ever save to the same part twice.

if you are still running less than 1gb, I suggest you upgrade to atleast 2gb, it's easy, cheap, and effective, if you don't know how to do it, watch a youtube tutorial on upgrading ram.
