Its soooo beautiful, its a shame light polution wastes this :( i wish the WHOLE world would turn their lights off every few days for a hour of so and look up and see the wonders of the sky and people would be amazed at what they see :D i hope it happens cause i want to see somthing like this in real life that would make my day...or night which ever one makes sense (like what Neutrinoghost said)
there is certainly IMPOSSIBLE that out there among all those galaxies there are no other intelligent beings.... and I don't mean god... I mean real ones
I live 10 miles North of London, I wish every day for a massive solar surge that would kill all power to UK street lights for just 1 night (knowing my luck it would be raining). 10/10 awesome.
It's funny you should say that. Back in the summer of 2003 when some of us here in North America experienced the famous 'black out', I remember looking up from my apartment building and just seeing the most beautiful sight. Not the milky way band in it's entirety, but more stars (& star clusters) than are usually visible in the night sky. It was truly breathtaking; they were so large and luminous.
@Neutrinoghost I feel exactly the same over here in Vancouver, Canada... it is really too bad that light pollution stops us from see the night sky in all its glory!
And if you live in a city you will never get to see that. Anyone who has that above them every night with that kind of clarity should count themselves as blessed.
That just fills me with absolute awe of the Universe.
You know what's really sad? I have never seen the milky way with my own eyes.
The lightpollution is just too strong. The saddest thing though is, that young kids might grow up without even knowing, that there are more then those hundret stars you can see in the nightsky.
If all the people would witness a sight like that every night, i think everyone would be more humble, inspired and creative. We, in the big cities, miss so much of the real life.
thanks for the coments guys, though here in the desert you can have a pretty clear view, you dont see the sky like that in plainview, the specs on wich the images where taken are on my other video, you can check there, but you can only achive this images with a proper configuration of optical lenses and light exposure.
yeah, this got nothing to do with astronomy, though a couple of weeks ago a crew came down and shot some scenes there for the new james bond movie, "quantum of solace".

Note that the Milky Way doesn't look that structured when you see it with your own eyes, but I assure you, it's still a wonderful sight!

after the centre of the milky way have passed what are all those other stars? still stars of the milky way or other galaxies?
osbteg 2 years ago
we cant view stars of other galaxies with our 'naked eye', so with that said, those are stars that correspond to our very own milk way :]
DiscountRockets 2 years ago
I think osbteg meant other galaxies themselves.

ffrom a dark site like that, is that really what the milky way looks like??
vassekb 2 years ago
you can see it quite alright actually, with the naked eye on a moonless night in the plain desert.
NikoBustos 2 years ago
no, not even close really. there's no colour and little structure. however it is pretty bright and pretty obvious.
