  • People complaining about government priorities have clearly not gone to college recently.

  • On one hand, as a college student struggling to "juggle" budget cuts resulting in eliminated courses, i am frustrated.

HOWEVER, I STRONGLY believe that it is because of the additional education I have chosen, I have a greater ability than before, to view things from different perspectives.

    Ultimately

lack of education can potentially lead to a greater misunderstanding while at the same time, further education is likely a catalyst that in many cases leads to greater understanding= less crime

  • ok, this shit isn't fair. Why should hardened criminals get a free education and degree when honest citizens have to pay for theirs? Hell some people have such low income and cannot recieve financial help to go to school. Wtf is the deal with this. These priorities are so fucked in the ass. The honest citizens should be able to get a free education and the criminals should have to pay for theirs.

  • well, we do need accountants with no morals.

  • damn it, the priorities here are way out? FREE EDUCATION FOR CRIMINALS>>/

WHAT ABOUT THE EDUCATION U KIDS NEED AN IS DENIED BECAUSE DONT HAVE MONEY TO PAY FOR? r u all going to wake up and kick this goverment out? its no right that u child the one that never have a problem with the law cant go the college and this criminals can? or the only CHOICE THE KIDS HAVE NOW TO GET FREE COLLEGE TUTUITION IS TO COMETE A CRIME? i know a bunch of good kids that want to go to college but cant afford it.

  • I like that inmates are given a true perspective, look into other prisons where they don't have programs like that, inmates get depressed, bored and start trouble probably even more. I appreciate that opportunity....

  • america is a shithole

  • The land of getting fucked over, robbed, disrespected, getting treated unfair, unless you are really rich.

  • "I'm 22" in a deep gangster voice... Im 25 and I still cant even grow a goatee like that.

  • One thing not mentioned is the majority of these inmates in the college program will not be getting out, ever.

  • People are picked not just thrown into the program. Your not gonna be allowed in if you have violent crimes or life sentences.

  • All are allowed in the college program. The majority are serving life sentences in the hope that participation in the program appeals to the Board of Prison Terms.

  • SO NOT TRUE!!!!!!!!....... our prison gives out free Ashland Uni. which one of the most expansive in the state and anyone can get in

  • They get books?!??! That's stupid. Just plain stupid. It's PRISON.

  • possibly benefits taxpayers if it keeps them from returning to jail once they are out

  • Great idea. Most of those guys WILL get out one day. Maybe they won't go back to stealing or selling dope.

  • not everbody in there was selling dope

  • No shit dumbass, some of them are in there for attacking smart mouths like yourself.

  • haha fuck yer brother

  • Are you going to hold him down or do you want to video tape it?

  • I would like to video tape it :)

  • this is a good idea if they are not returning to crime.

  • you dont deserve internet you deserve a dicking

  • thats cool that they are educating themselves..the drawback is that many employers today require backround checks and often exclude felons from being hired..

  • Thats NOT true, Vermont or New Hampshire one of the NE states inmates CAN and DO vote.and I think there is one other state that lets them vote as well.

  • lawl

  • question: can inmates vote in elections?

  • Damn, I'm about to rob a liquor store to get me a college degree. LOL

  • systems like this should be apply by merit. theres a massive difference between someone who steals cars and some who murders and rapes. Do people who intentionally kill other people really deserve an education they've already potentaially thrown away in the past? yea sure stealing cars or stealing possesions should never be taken lightly, and punishment seems appropriate. however don't they deserve a chance at education? a car is a material possesion its replacable, lifes are not. just opinion.

  • Right. And you should take your ignorance and shove it right up your ass.

We should try to rehabilitate the prisoners, and show them how to become a contributing member of the society. Ridiculing them for their mistakes doesn't solve anything.

  • fuck you.

  • YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO HIM...or you might be next!

  • If they just sit around and do nothing they have more time on their hands to plot and scheme to hurt others. Do you work in the prison system? Things like sports, working, and schooling helps inmate stay out of trouble. Earning a higher education help inmates stay out of prison.

  • Well, you're right, but that also makes them stronger and smarter for their next crime.

  • hahahahahahhahahhahahahhahahahahahahahhahahahah

college education "makes them smarter for their next crime"

    hahahahhahaahhahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahhahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahahahahahhahahahahahhahahaaaaaa

  • I believe some prisons do make inmates wear pink. It has a calming effect on people. Some police stations have a "pink room" that they use for interrogations because suspects are more calm in a pink room.

  • does anybody know which prison this is?

  • It's called Long Bay Jail

  • whats theyre football teams name? the grinders :P

  • thats why i love america! no matter how bad of a person you are you still get another chance of making your mistakes up but there is no point of going to school if you have a criminal record youre destined to work in construccion or any other low entry level job but oh well lets spend precious tax money on this, god that makes me want to rob someone and get free college on it hehe!

  • these mofos are lucky if u live in Africa like i do you can forget about having a university in prison.

  • this is good but at the same time whats the point? you wont be able to have a job with that degree because your an ex convict.

school is good to a certain point. you definitely dont need school to be successful and thats the truth.

  • This would help many people stay out of going back to jail. Most didnt even finished highschool they skiped school. Most of this inmates are smart, intelligent and even brilliant but they are misguided and went the wrong way, or the wrong people noticed their potencial and exploded it the wrong way [this happens a lot]. Reason why they need to be educated and focus them towards beign better humans.

  • yea, my 8th grade english teacher showed my class with an opera video about prisons and it told us tat males in prison r smarter then males outside...so all the good guys r inside of prison and we got all the crappy ones out here.

  • what if they use pens to stab each other

  • lol someone just gets annoyed cause they dont know they answers and flips. Than the real shit show begins

  • then they will have even longer time to parol or getting out

  • Rob a liquor store and get a free College Education?

    Only in America...

  • amen to that

  • Oh dear only in America

by the way in England too

  • Just grow up. Some people who commit crime came from a impoverished situation and didn't have the help or guidance to do the right thing. They only know how to survive and an education after taking the consequence, going to prison, and learning their lesson will give them a second chance. Not all criminal are hannibal Lector some are just genuinely in need of some form of support and a glimpse of future.

  • this is cool

  • this makes me want 2 go 2 prison!

  • Does anybody know how to download this video?

  • Why not learn to escape

  • Comment removed

  • Maybe I'll commit a crime so I can go to college for free!

  • Oh yeah! im so goin to do dat

  • And free dental and medical care.

  • and 3 meals a day

  • This is standard in many EU prisons, especially in Scandinavia and the UK.

  • Education trumps religion everytime! More power to em'.

  • Fair play to this lad for his efforts. The present prison system obviously doesnt work due to the amount of repeat offenders so alternatives need to be researched.

  • it's incredibly hard to tolerate the view some people have of inmates as sub-human. they come from a completely different environment. i doubt that any of us have gone through life with out doing something completely irresponsible and/or reckless, only for them that same impulse has a far more severe consequence. these are people in need of help and should not be regarded as a race of the intellectually inferior.

  • Yes, they look like innocent docile boys with their lunch boxes and apples for the teacher ... wait, he has a knife .. and STABS the teacher ... Who are you fooling?! While this program is admirable and should be continued, expanded even don't think for one minute that any of these thugs wouldn't slice your throat open to get out of there. "... should not be regarded as a race of the intellectually inferior"??!

isn't that the reason for the education program??

  • im surprised the prison system let this happen? its in there intrest to make it more likely for released inmates to return=more money for them :). dont teach them, make them commit crime and return

  • yeah the govt. uses their labor at 5 to 10 cents an hour and outsources it to companies that make products such as license plates, etc. no one cares about the inmates. every human isn't bad inside jail. people make mistakes. the govt. wants to take advantage of that.

  • holy shit, you were telling the truth!

  • why are they bothering to do lessons they are idiots for breaking the law and getting in there, unless they just commited a crime to get the free degree which makes them a bit intelligent

  • Good for them at least they are trying to help themselves.

  • So I can commit a crime and get a free degree as opposed to me burying myself in debt with student loans? What the hell is wrong with that picture.

  • "Inmate University"? Does CSU know that their slogan has been stolen?

  • @LovelyYTRocks

Shut up you ignorant bitch. Let's see your college degree.

  • shut up, a smart person knows that African Americans only make up 12% of the people in US jails...idiot!

  • it's sad how easily people believe what they are fed on tv.

  • Oh really?

Take another gander at your researches.

  • I looked it up. According to the US Dept of Justice, white inmates outnumber black inmates almost 2 to 1 from 1986 through 1997. I couldn't find stats after '97.

  • I saw a movie where inmates participated in a flower-show; kind of forgot the name of that movie but it was based on a true story. I think we need to make education more affordable and accessible to humans on the planet. Education is the key to a better society when will this earth have enough money for education ? Nice video; enjoyed it!

  • well gives then something to do while serving teh time :o

  • Here is an idea... Educate them, but then make them pay it off like the army does. Although I think they should be forced to work to pay for the roof and the hot meals and the cable tv that some prisons offer... make them work hard for it... the whole point is that it is supposed to be a punishment as well as a correctional facility.

  • blax iz smatir din crakas!

  • Well, by your logic, NO ONE should be educated. In addition, I honestly don't see how writing essays and working out equations are going to help someone commit more crimes.

  • Here's a F***ING thought about being cost effective:

    1 year prison: $42,800

    1 year education: $800

    42,800 divided by $800= 53

53 people educated for the cost of 1 year in prison.

2 Million in prison, 14% under 25= 280,000-college age inmates

14.98 million kids could be educated for the cost of prison for these 280,000.

  • Yep. Maybe if we would give these kids some hope of a good education in the first place, they wouldn't have fallen to where they are now.

  • wrong

  • Wow .. i have to pay for my classes, buy my books, buy supplies for lab ect ect. and they get it all for free because there in prison ? That doesnt make any sense at all. Its like they're being rewarded for crimes they did. Next thing you know they're gonna be given the chance for scholarships ... or admited to graduate programs ... how stupid

  • Yeah, its really stupid to actively create less criminals within society. God you're incredibly close minded.

  • And you're incredibly naive. There will be more criminals in the long run as jail is becoming a less scary place to be. People will no qualifications or no hope will commit crimes to get put in prison to study. I used to work in a jail & saw this type of thing all the time as people commited crimes just to get a roof over their head and food in their bellies.

  • So, the answer is to make life outside of jail better. Jail is a terrifying thought for those of us in the middle class, believe me.

  • I was just thinking that. I work 2 jobs to go to university.

  • I agree with you. However the decreased in recidivism is impressive. If they had restrictions, like you must be a first time offender, I would agree with it more easily.

  • Jade.. I know you're incredibly stupid.. but let me try to explain this. We want to reform these people.. they don't do crime because they don't fear the punishment.. they do crime because they don't see an alternative. It is less costly for us to reform people than to keep them imprisoned. If they receive an education they are much more likely to reform and become a better person in society. Instead of an inmate draining our tax dollars, they become a productive citizen & contribute to society.

  • Will it reform everyone? No. But it's much more effective than not educating them. He said that 70% or so do not return to prison. Economically and socially, this is a no-brainer. Except for idiots like you who think it's a bad idea.

  • These privately owned Prisons generate about 20-40 billion dollars in labor. Hardly seems free to me, or the goverment either. Otherwise they would be doing something to steer people away from jail cells instead of into them. Anyway, don't you think politicians spend way more in a fiscal year on unnecessary things, then what it cost to educate these prisoners? Must be missing the bigger picture for the'I pay taxes,it's not fair' band-wagon. RE@TI

  • Education has shown itself repeatedly to be the best antidote for crime, but that does not make it an easy sell to the public. People resent the very idea of convicts going to college when honest working people can't afford to send their own kids. And then you have the self-righteous crowd who'd rather shoot 'em or throw away the keys. Good fiscal mgmt too often has nothing to do with the making of social policies.

  • Yeah i totally agree with you... I'm guessing they have a requirement for certain inmates to enter this program in prison. Probably like must be high school graduate. Must me motivated. stuff like that to make education work.

  • Yeah.. this programs arent for everyone they have to prove they are motivated, interested, good behavoir, etc. It does have some requirements for you to enroll on them.

  • wrong

  • Are they getting the degree in prison? I had to pay for my education and they are getting it for free?

  • its a community college you retard... You must be as dumb as those inmates.

  • Ok internet warrior calm down. By the way I work at RIM and have a university education THAT I PAID FOR. Too many people getting a free lunch.

  • I'm so proud of you. Would you like a hug? :)

  • yes please, I love you to

  • I'm sure it's "free" to the inmates, because the state - you - basically pay for everything via taxes. But that doesn't mean it's a bad idea. You're paying for all sorts of programs aimed at keeping guys out of prison already (which saves you money if they work) and this is just another program, the difference being it's actually effective. If money is your concern, then embrace it.

  • Nice rebutal Moldova, thank you.

  • All inmates should be made to sit through 4 semesters of Shakespeare studies. That would be enough to keep anyone from wanting to go back to prison!

  • Yes i agree as well, this should be established in all correctional facilities

  • looks like a great program

  • this is a great idea

  • This is great. Why doesn't ever prison have this ?

  • lol thaionair2007 its true

  • ya its a better idea then just letting them sit and do nothing but make illegal items

  • Maybe they're just getting smarter on ways of "NOT" returning back to prison with their criminal ways now.

  • Finally, America is doing something smart.

  • Amen

  • nope

  • Very impressive!!!
