@serenitycomes Truer words have never been spoken. Saw them live in Toledo, Ohio in April 1974, and it's still the best concert I've ever seen. Skunk Baxter and Denny Dias are what made Steely Dan the best guitar band of the '70s, brief as it was. It's a damn shame they didn't produce a concert film of that '74 tour. All the best songs from their first three albums. Stunning doesn't begin to describe it.
I love this band but the guitar player on this recording isn't qualified to carry Skunk's guitar picks.... Skunk did the original guitar in one take off the floor live.... unbelievable.... Steely Dan is one of the alltime greats
Ok I found out his name is Ted Baker, and I can't seem to find anything else much on him. So I guess I'm going to have to decipher this by ear. Lol ! wish me luck.
If anyone can point me out to the intro piano player's name, or any type of piano lick that closley resembles it... would be much appreciated. wow that intro was cool I GOT to learn that one.
@StoopTroup No no no! He's beautiful (in the most hetro tone I can create). He's as fun to watch as he is to listen to. Saw them from 1st row at the Fox Theater in Detroit this year. One of the true highlights of my life.
Great work by Jon Herington. But what I have always loved about this song is the horns. Great arrangement and performances. Classic Dan from my college days. Love it.
@CFMD28 If you haven't ever played one...your life isn't complete. A buddy of mine let me play it and I fell in love. I still have my Strat and my Les Paul to but that one is fantastic
The highest cool of my high school daze. Thank U, this virtual memory pool! Haven't heard this in sooo many years. In all i've watched on youtube it never occurred to me to watch a steely dan vid. Just a lifestyle shift dredged this song up into my head as commentary/accompanimt
One of my favorite solos ever for a studio song but I must say dude did himself proud. I'm a big fan of syncopated solos with the beat and this was an excellent one.
I can't decide if I like the original guitar solos or these ones better. So I'm just going to say that they are both totally wicked. This is a great song.
Awesome Song. Look at all those nerdy old farts, Just kidding. I'm 40 and grew up listening to my older siblings music. Glad I got indoctrinated into good music and didnt listen to only OZZY, like my friends. I met Jeff Baxter in the airport once. Still had handle bar mustache.
Possibly one of the best Rock Horn Charts Ever Recorded. I mean the guitar solo is great but the Horn Section is just so spot on in the pocket. . . really sets this song apart.
A little respect, Youth! Yer parents cut their teen teeth on music like this.
What bothers me is the nachos and cheese dip and all that....back in the day it was some pre-rolled joints, maybe some speed and a bottle of wine, or stronger. NOw ya can
t even smoke a ciggarette at a concert. Not the same without that blue cloud of smoke in the lights!!!
@SaxyDan54 LoL! Unless of course they just finished a doobie and have the munchies for Nacho's. In any event, the day I wear pleated Dockers shorts with pulled up white socks to a concert is the day...... yeah that will never happen. Or will it??
Just so long as they are no black socks with shorts. Here in Florida, you can see that a lot, old cods with short wearing black socks and leather loafers. I made my wife swear that not matter how demented I got to not allow me to do that.
@tyleryesta1 It probably IS your parents, LOL! My sons are grown with families of their own, but we still make the Steely Dan concert our family field trip!
Fantastic piano prelude! My life would be bereft without Steely Dan. "You've been tellin me you're a genius since you were seventeen," "Your daddy was quite surprised to find you with the working girls at the county jail," "Oh, no, Guadalajara won't do"???! Great lyricists, composers, and always by best musicians in the biz.
Fantastic piano prelude! My life would be bereft without Steely Dan. Everyone is giving their all, they LOVE what they are doing-it shows in every note played. So Good. Can't want to see them in August 2011. Such Talent
Herrington did a great job on the guitar work but I love the Skunk solo work too...When I first heard Skunk's solos back in the 70's I couldn't believe my ears...never heard a guitarist this talented back in that era...Blew me away....and it still does today....
Can you imagine auditioning for guitar in front of Fagen and Becker?! CHRIST! I wonder how many they went through before they decided on Jon ? I'm sure there were a number of auditioners could play the songs note for note, but the genius of Becker and Fagen picked Harrington, with his ability to stay true to the original leads, but still skillfully adding his own licks. Once again, Fagen and Becker knew what they wanted!
@Revolution1117 Excellent observation. I've had the same thought. Just knowing those two were on the other side of the glass would completely intimidate me. If you haven't already, check out the handful of "Making Of" vids on here. As a guitarist, watching Becker and Herington interact is fascinating. Don't think I've ever seen Walter play a "straight" chord. The man's vastly underappreciated.
@greenplank Yes I'm ashamed to think that I did but it's true. EEK! His name should be there and thank you for bringing that up. I was trying to praise the Dan's long history of guitar greats and the list is so incomplete without him. I stand corrected.
Jon Herrington has taken on a whole lot of history when he took this job. And leave it to Fagen and Becker to find the right man for the job. The guitar players he has to follow here are as follows. Larry Carlton, (could be considered the best) Denny Dias, (Great by any standard), Dean Parks, (another great player) and Jeff (Skunk) Baxter, (the name says it all). Jon has found his way to make Steely Dan his for now and not many could do that. Great job Jon.
Oh..no Guadalajara wont do...I lived in Mexico for 3 years and loved it..too much partying though..lol...but Guadalajara is a beautiful city..tranquil, quiet..and fun...great fun...not like your tourist destinations in MX...you better habla...at least poquito...great song.
I´m into the whole steely dan stuff and for me is probably the best band ever, but I wonder what has happened to Fagen´s voice... even in his records it´s like he´s whispering... one of the things that make lazy to hear them live now is his voice... great band, great players and great composers though!!
@hicks727 Yup. Fat alcholic fan base. This song was from 37 freakin' years ago. That's a lot of time for for fans to become overwight alcoholics. Cheers...
@durgaaa Their fan base in the early 70's were probably cool college hipsters.....anti-hippies.....I'm not dissing anybody but some of the dudes in that crowd have clearly let themselves go lol....I do like Fagen's Morph the Cat...very cool....current fan base???....The New Pornographers
@hicks727 well hicks i've let myself go over the last 30years so whats it got to do with you?and yes you are "DISSING" decent people,so s t f u.and enjoy the song.
if you do not like the licks of jon Herrington then come over to my house and i shall shove a guitar up YER ASS !! the dude Shreds with ultimate taste ..precision ..soul !!
@zachfrasergodden hmm, yes it was good. I preferred the original, though...playing off the horns bass and rest of band. Listen to the riffs: youtube.com/watch?v=xztUkVfn3mQ&feature=related
Jeeeeeeeez! Have you ever heard better, know these guys are musical perfectionists by trait but to blend percussion, horns , strings and vocal, (not forgetting Don on the keys!) so well.... and live too!!!! Astounding!
@Winterstick549 There is no excuse for the shitty "computer speakers" when there are sound cards (and even good computer speakers). You are right- Steely Dan is amazing. Everyone should hear them at the highest quality possible.
To my ears the mix isn't quite right early on, too thin in the middle, but it fills out as the track progresses. Maybe the backing vocals ARE there to protect Donald's aging voice from exposure but they blend well and I like the arrangement. Great guitar work too. Few SD songs rock as hard as this.
Like the studio version better. Backing vocals are not voiced correctly, I think they are helping compensate that Donnie cant hit the notes anymore. great Song and an incredible horn arrangement.
the original version on the album one of the best ever brass sections on record and best damned guitar break just after this guy is good but aint like the original ! i m irish by the way . seen the band in dublin in 1996 becker done a lot of the solos was ok but i would love to have seen them in 1972 or so ( i was about 10 then !!)
Truthfully the band is great and the guitarist has the right to add a little of himself, Donalds vocals are weak but he is a studio artist, live was never his strong point, genius all the same !!!!
Saw them at the Tower the other night, Unbelievable!! I have 2 suggestions: Change the credits to Herington/ Fagen and PLEASE don't let Walter sing....Please!
Yeah and these old f----rs can play .....and hey you'll be a old f---kr soon enough!.....Sup3wood.....It happens before ya know it...but these guys are spot on as they were a thousand years ago!.
Rick, I AM an old f***er! So are you! I remember putting on some of your albums just to get my date in the mood...I've been stuck with her for 30 years...
Tehdude. Number one, Jeff is alive and doing great. Besides producing records for diffenrent famous singers and playing lead he actually works for the US Defense Dept. regarding missle work. This is Herington and he a very good guitatist but not in the same league with Jeff, that's just my opinion. People bought Steely Dan Albums for the quitar playing which included Baxter, Denny Dias and many great players to include Larry Carlton, Lee Rentinour and others.

Jeeeeeeeez! Have you ever heard better, know these guys are musical perfectionists by trait but to blend percussion, horns , strings and vocal, (not forgetting Don on the keys!) so well.... and live too!!!! Astounding!

Your talking about his vocals being bland but the people at this concert don't seem to mind. And neither do I

@Winterstick549 There is no excuse for the shitty "computer speakers" when there are sound cards (and even good computer speakers). You are right- Steely Dan is amazing. Everyone should hear them at the highest quality possible.

@gefinesse Wow,,I wrote that a year ago,,,lol.
I upped my system to use my stereo speakers and it sounds fantastic! I just need to get some Steely Dan DVDs, among other bands.

And your band can arrange such music critic?
notlazy99 1 year ago
To my ears the mix isn't quite right early on, too thin in the middle, but it fills out as the track progresses. Maybe the backing vocals ARE there to protect Donald's aging voice from exposure but they blend well and I like the arrangement. Great guitar work too. Few SD songs rock as hard as this.

@1234cottagedoor Fantastic song, but the mix here is a bit off alright - more a fault of the TV production I reckon

live shows us mortals how its done, has anyone got a copy of that brass section, pure genius,

@ approx 5:02 was that Andrew Love on sax ?

Truthfully the band is great and the guitarist has the right to add a little of himself, Donalds vocals are weak but he is a studio artist, live was never his strong point, genius all the same !!!!

Saw them at the Tower the other night, Unbelievable!! I have 2 suggestions: Change the credits to Herington/ Fagen and PLEASE don't let Walter sing....Please!
beatles1000 2 years ago 3
my only complaint is that the guitarist needs to rock the fuck out more on the solo. otherwise, pure musical genius.
