@MrPsycoSilver Right, we're all so familiar with it. They're all basically the same movie but in a different format. Visually the movie was fantastic but in terms of content it brought nothing new to the table. Just because a lot of good movies have used the same general plot, it doesn't make the plot "timeless", it makes it overused.
could have been black and white for all i care.. ofc the colors was a big pluss to really get you in there.. but the story with all the hidden messages alone was enough for me to see it as a great movie..
@Xirus5 Hidden messages? They were not hidden. War is bad, corporations are bad, the military is bad, Technology is bad, People are bad. It is a good kids movie but not the best film of the year.
well several scenes it is said how messed up earth has become and how it ones was like.. then you have the navi living side by side with nature and not destroying it.. kinda hints to the gaia hypothesis.. that is one of the things i picked up.. along with some other stuff
totally agree, I also love it how the 3d is used to pick out and define certain things, that really spark your brain and your emotions. You MUST watch this, even if your not a sci-fi fan, (even though i found that everything in it seemed fairly 'feesable'). I did unobtainium was a bit unimaginative though xD.
I saw this movie 3 times within 2 weeks. First time in 2D and the last two in RealD. The 2D presentation was still pretty good, it's not really gonna change a lot; I was blown away the first time I saw it. The common reason why many people loved the 3D version is because it's their first 3D movie experience. Great movie experience!
most overhyped shittiest movie of all time, one-dimensional characters, if that, and the story didnt make sense at all. im starting to think titantic would have been fucking terrible if james cameron had complete control over it like he did this movie
Look n00bs, the point of going to a film is not to be an asshole, nit-picking throughout the whole of it so you can come on here and rant. The point is to be entertained. The film succeeded at that immensely. Yes its cliche, yes it was TOTALLY predictable, yes its theme has been done to death, yes it required a total suspension of disbelief. I could create a list a mile long of everything I would have done differently with this film but the point was I left feeling like I was highly entertained.
Is the movie goign to be released on DVD in 3D? Sorry, I'm living in France for the next while and didn't even know it was a movie until a week ago. I saw it and now it's my favorite movie.
Yes, special effects were stunning and amazing and I would agree that if you will go see it then go see it in 3D.
But, I don`t agree that the story was good. To me it felt like it lack (how should I put mildly) SOUL.
The very fact that James Cameron used archtypes made it quite predictable and (not surprising considering the director) had alot of environmentalist, liberalist propaganda.
There is a saying that goes "I wouldn't have wanted it any other way." I'm sure it would be a fine move in 2D .. but now that I have seen it twice in 3D "I wouldn't have wanted it any other way."
That last comment is a very big call! dont bother seeing it if ur not going to see it in 3d?. are u fucken serious or what? the 3d is a cool addition but does NOT make the movie!
hrmm ride in a Ferrari or a Ford Pinto .. yes i am fucken serious. 3D made this movie much more impressive then it would have been in 2D. Just read all the other reviews .. apparently i am not the only one who feels this way.
BTW saw it in 2d, and the emotions on the faces were very amazing as well. Haven't seen 3d, but would not like to, since I fear it would take away attention from the movie itself.
I disagree completely. Seeing it in 3D did not take away attention from the movie at all but was used very subtly to enhance the experience. Listen to what the guy in this review is saying. I would not have wanted to see it in 2D now that I have seen it in 3D. Simply AMAZING.
@khessmd68 forgive me for not rushing to see it in 3d and for not basing my decisions on youtube reviews! I hate 3d basically, and there are people who simply do! I am considering seeing it again in 3d, but for the first time, I just wanted to see the movie, and not jump about because people are running towards me etc!
they didn't use 3d in the old cheezy ways... there's not any jumping around because things are coming at you. I typically hate 3d also, but the way it is used in this film made it more like you were actually there. it really takes you out of the theater and makes you connect with the movie more.
ok, saw it id 3d (70% of it, cause my eyes ached) and its absolutely no difference compared with 2d experience. I mean, its like an enhanced version of the movie, but really...whats the hype?
i think the hype is all because it's one of the best renditions of 3d used. the last 3d thing i saw was nightmare before christmas and that didn't even look a lot different than the 2d version. I also liked how they didn't use it in that old cheezy way of making things pop out to scare you.
They pretty much demonize the military and businesses, and draw parallels between the story and the war in Iraq, and the supposed "exploitation" for their oil.
Why don't they portray the Na'vi leader as a corrupt, brutal dictator, who exploits his own people for oil contracts, or whatever resource they are referring to in the movie?
Beck warned about this, liberals have stooped so low as to indoctrinating our children!
@TrySuckingLess, I think you totally missed the point. it was in a much deeper layer. I think the name Avatar has a deeper meaning. The main difference between the Skypeople and the Navi is that the Navi do everything - fighting, hunting, working, lovemaking, etc. in person, while the Skypeople use Avatars - helicopters, robots, foreign bodies...to experience something, and therefore loose a lot.
@TrySuckingLess What do they (we, actually) loose? The awareness of eating being connected with killing. The risk it takes to tame a flying animal (compared to sitting in a helicopter). The fact that you can't shoot an arrow randomly - you have to target one person and condemn this person to death. The bodies of the Navi express their way of life - they are geared for survival. Compared to us today....well.
Truly amazing special effects. You must see this in 3d!! Awesome!! I was also able to look past James Cameron's leftist propaganda because it was so over the top, it was almost comical. This is a riveting movie!!!
I just watched it. I thought the CGI facial expressions were well done. The 3D quality I found to be impressive. Without the 3D for me this would have been about an longer than I would have enjoyed. Thanks for the review Tom. Cheers.
that movie was the BOMB!!! omg i am still breathless from it and even tho ive seen it four times i still want to watch it over and over again! my fav. movie!!!
Very true- i was totally blown away by the facial expressions. It was very wierd- I almost thought for once they got real guys covered in makeup. BNut it was CGI. James Cameron will always deserve my full respect for his work. Abyss, T1 and T2, Titanic. Truly a master in directing. Well done to all the Special effects guys. In future with better technology, it will not cost so much
Yes he did Aliens(the second in the saga) which today is still a masterpiece horror/sci-fi movie - both in action, horror and suspense( especially the scene with scanners) Sigourney Weaver was bad ass in that movie. Funny the Powerloaders in Aliens are quite similar to the machines in AVATAR. These movies are like 23 years apart. Both spectacular till today.
I saw it not in 3d it it was amazing. Im not a fan of dumb crap popping out of the screen, becuase the only film i saw in 3d was my bloody valentine, and it sucked. It felt like the background detail was deminished, is it the same with avatar? I hope not, id like to see it again.
i can see u did that review just after seeing the movie.Like evrybody ealse who saw it. you have so many thing to say but it s impossible to put down with word. welcom to the club
Merry Christmas, Tom! Agreed! I like that Cameron took the time to let us explore this new world. The audience becomes enchanted with it just as much as the protagonist. There are incredible action sequences, but there are also sequences that have more of a National Geographic documentary feel. Tom, I suspect you may be someone who saw 2001: A Space Odyssey when it was released. If so, how did that experience compare with this? Because I think both films were a quantum leap for their time.
well they're vector glasses... if you get a crappy pair of them, and one side lets in more or less light than it should, you'll get a headache. or if the glasses don't fit your head, and you're constantly using the muscles in your head to keep them on your face, it might cause a headache too... maybe you should take one of those adjustable glasses straps to keep them on your head if that is the case.
The way that Cameron just pulls you into the world of Pandora...it was like actually being there for sure. I'm glad he used the 3D not as an in your face gimmick to grab the audience but in a more subtle, submersive way.
It did not feel like a 2.5 hour long movie. I was so immersed in it. This movie made me fall in love with the Pandorians and hate the military and corporation when they started bulldozing the planet. Indeed there are many themes and messages in the movie, but most of all, I want to know more about why they came to Pandora, the minerals they were after, and what happened to Earth prior to 2154.
Amazing movie, going to hunt out the nearest IMAX 3D cinema to see it true glory, even though in 3D in a normal cinema it is spectacular!

Thanks for the review Tom I was definitely planning on seeing it but will make sure it is in the 3d version. There are so many good movies out there this Christmas, I just watched Up in the Air with George Clooney and it was really good. Have a Merry Christmas!
I'm definitely looking forward to this, and I will see it in 3D. I have a feeling from what you said about archetypes that the characters were oversimplified, but you'd be a good judge of whether that's true.
I hope the dialog is good. Thanks for the insight!
I saw it on IMAX 3-d, which is how it's meant to be seen. Hopefully you saw it in IMAX as well... If not, you need to. =D
I think this was probably the greatest film that's ever been made. The movie just sucks you in and takes you to a new reality that you feel like you can escape to. I kept wishing I could live on this world that they created throughout the entire film because it felt so real and so intuitive and natural. Amazing... It was far beyond anything I ever expected it to be.
You'll be glad you did because IMAX film has ten times the picture of normal movie film. It's SOOO clear and detailed that you don't know what is real or fake.. even when you know you are looking at CGI. It's easily the biggest leap in picture quality since color film was first created. O_O
This film was so amazing... It kinda makes me want to go to film school so I could make films like this. lol
Great review. I went to see Jim Cameron get his star on Hollywood blvd today, and standing there listening to the instrumental Avatar soundtrack thru their speakers was moving. I don't know what it is about movie music, but just hearing the Avatar music makes me curious to see this film.
Really got his star today, huh? Smart PR/marketing on somebody's part. The music is definitely a big part of the film. Resemblance to Titanic is hard to overlook.
The 3D experience is a virtual requirement to understand, or at least appreciate, the basic "out of body" premise of this movie. Often you really connected and felt like Jake Sully piloting his avatar.
Your description of the 3D is interesting, I've heard a reviewer call it 'immersive', which is pretty much what you were saying, instead of the old 'pointy' ones. The last 3D movie I watched was Up, which didn't benefit from the 3D at all in my opinion, and the glasses are a bit irritating.
I had initially thought to skip Avatar, but I trust your opinion. I'll try to check it over the holiday. 3D is getting to be really good these days. Thanks for the review.
OMG YOU LOOK LIKE LEWIS BLACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahaha good review man!

i say the plotline isnt original because there are movies like pocahontas and dances with wolves that have already done this sort of style

I'm going to see it on Tuesday in IMAX 3D. My sister saw it a few days ago and pretty much has the same view about 3D as you do. I'm excited.

IMAX 3D has to be fantastic for this one. Enjoy.

Mostar doesn't have a cinema let alone a 3D one. Bootleg DVD is the best option here so I guess I won't be bothering then!

lol, no, I think I'd wait! Hope all's well there.

Saw it in plain 3D. IMAX next! Definitely exceeded my expectations. Thanks.

The "out of body" motif definitely enhanced by 3D. Now I want to see it again and study the details!

GORMLESSwonder 2 years ago
Big difference in use of 3D, imo. It faded away and the world became focus. Definitely fun but glasses are still a bit of a pain.

Must be seen in 3D

Do you have to wear those stupid glasses for 3D?

Yes, but not the old red/green ones. These are more like Wayfarers!

I had initially thought to skip Avatar, but I trust your opinion. I'll try to check it over the holiday. 3D is getting to be really good these days. Thanks for the review.

Oh, if you're in the US Mid-Atlantic/Northeast, it's gonna be an adventure out there this afternoon! Good luck.

People that saw it in 2d also liked it a lot. But yes.. 3D is way to go for this.

Several people with vision problems mentioned having difficulty with 3D, so glad to hear 2D worked well, too. Thanks.
tlg847 2 years ago
If people ha difficulty with 3D they should check eyes. It can be indication that something is wrong with one eye.
I hope that is not a case here. :(
