Because Uribe needed a political boost at home, not because he cared about her well being. Also included in the "rescue" were the 3 Americans held by the FARC, how convenient. It looks to me that a secret deal was made to release then finally, but Uribe is now taking credit for a military "rescue" (just like the end of Iranian Hostages Crisis). Even Chavez's Venezuela plays a role by receiving them first, how stupid Uribe thinks public opinion can be at least outside Colombia.
I can't stand Uribe, OR his dealings with the paras and drug cartels, and his motives were purely selfish-- so he can change the constitution and run for president again.
HOWEVER, I am VERY happy Ingrid is free. She is a generous, idealistic, humane, intelligent human being who did NOT deserve to be kidnapped.
I hope SHE runs for president, though after what she's been through I don't blame her if she moves permanently to France.
I am happy for her too, I hope she is not force into the role of a Colombian Joan of Arc. If anything she is one of the most politically inconvenient figures for Uribe to have around in colombia. He may try to get her to stop her political career so that he can run the country for life.
I'm worried for her safety from Uribe's paras is she decides to run for president.
On another note: Isn't it interesting that the rescue "just happened" to occur came while McBush was in Colombia? The day before, press pundits were saying that it was very odd that McBush was in Colombia when he should have been in the US talking about the economy.
The news is reporting that the Colombian military had the assistance of the U.S. at least in part in setting up the plan. I imagine that the U.S. provided them with intercepted communications by the FARC about the transfer that allowed them to replace the actual original FARC flight. That is, if we are to believe that they were actually rescue, not released. Interestingly, the U.S. never attempted to rescue their pilots from the FARC avoiding media attention to their undercover operations there.
It was interesting that Ingrid thanked the soldiers and the French president for her release but did NOT mention Uribe at all. She also said that Chavez should be part of any peace talks with the FARC.
Well, she did but not in as high a profile as he expected. She saw all along that it was a set up but probably could not risk the lives of the others if the guerrillas decided to have a change of heart. They were paid off in negociation by 3rd. international parties according to the Forbes magazine website so that Uribe could be able to claim a liberation without negociating directly with the FARC (thanks a lot for that information). Hopefully the reminder of the hostages are released later on.
