I´m a atheist but i still wish a merry christmas ! Cause Political Correctness poisens everything!

Christmas is as christian as it is political correct. It´seuropean, it´s pagan (sol invictus). it´s commerce and it´s fun. We invented it. Its ours, and all these mirthles bomb-belt wearing goat-molesters and their sour-faced goody two-shoes friends can go to sanduneland and die on liver cancer ..or something else pleasant.

Hanukkah is a bit before Xmas, my Orthodox family have their Xmas on Jan 7, and us godless Commie freaks, we just greet the New Year. Ironically, my Muslim Egyptian friends wish "Merry Christmas" to others. I think saying "happy holidays" is just a lazy way of wishing everyone good hunting for the shopping season without getting into the fascinating but time consuming theological debates. I like theological debates but "happy holidays" works well for people I don't care about or in mixed crowds.

Happy New Year - I think "holiday" comes from "Holy day" - ie saints days etc anyway, so does it matter what we wish each other as long as it's wishing well. Bit late to wish Happy Christmas for 2008!

The fuss made over calling Christmas "Christmas" is incredible, I swear the only people who actually care are the PC idiots in government. I know Muslims, Jews, atheists, and they all refer to it as Christmas and aren't "offended" by it. Either treat it as a holy holiday, or as a regular holiday. Electric Car's are neat but, I don't really think they will ever get around the battery problems. Unless of course we start building Tesla towers and transport the energy via air through resonance. :)

As an interim thing I quite like ethanol. Here in Australia GMH (1 of V two main car companies) will produce Ethanol powered cars by 2010.

The problem with battery powered cars is the charging & storage losses & on going maintenance costs. If better chemical batteries can be invented this may change in the future.

I saw a project once where a solar power plant created a storage charge using a process that transformed a gas into a liquid. The process then reversed at night to produce electricity. The key thing was that it was about 80% efficient & the storage device never wore out.

Anyhow I'm sure we will go through many decades of exciting & diverse options to solve our energy need's.

I've always been under the impression that the phrase "Happy Holidays" was meant to cover Christmas and the New Year, especially since many people take time off to celebrate both and they are so close together.

Of course, celebrating the new year on January 1st could very well piss off a lot of Chinese-Americans :D

Actually... Happy Holidays is a quite old phrase, and can be seen on late 1800s/early 1900s Christmas cards... along with Merry Christmas, Marry Xmas, etc. So it's not necessarily a PC well-wishing... even though many may use it as one.

But, Merry Christmas to you nonetheless. And here's to hoping for a combustion free twenty-oh-nine (I like that). :)

It's called 'the holidays/holiday period/holiday season' in America because Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and New Years (not sure of any others) all happen within the same general period , which is also why people wish Happy Holidays as well as Merry Christmas... not necessarily PC in many cases, more just being inclusive and aware that America has a diverse makeup of people who don't all celebrate the same things.

Christmas is not a Christian festival, it is no more Christian than Yuletide, Sunatarlia, Hunnuka or any other festival held this time of the year. There is even a Hindu sect which has a feast at this time. The birth of Christ is believed to be nearer May. The Roman Catholic church hijacked the Sunatarlia festival around 320AD and decided to declare it Jesus' birthday. Christians have been believing that ever since, reasonable people where never sucked in. Easter is for Christians.

I think the main reason for the referral to "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas" is that in the US, the term is more inclusive: literally everything between Thanksgiving and New Years. In the US, Thanksgiving (affectionately nicknamed Turkey Day) is the 4th Thursday in November, while in Canada it's the 2nd Monday in October. So more than just "Political Correctness", it's just generally easier to say "Happy Holidays" rather than listing all of the Holidays separately.

Folks in retail say "Happy Holidays" here to avoid insulting people who aren't celebrating Christmas. You have Christmas (pagan and Christian flavors, often with little distinction), Hannukah, Winter Solstice, and Kwanzaa being celebrated all in and around this time of year.

I still say Merry Christmas to you because I'm celebrating Christmas, and I wish that happiness on you and yours.

I hate Christmas, have done ever since I became an adult.. all that dashing around, sorting things out, buying presents when I didn't have the money to support it. Now I'm older (60) I still hate it, my Christmas today is looking after my old dad (poor thing)with dementia and incontinence *sigh*, I just can't get into this Christmas stuff any more.. it just has no substance for me. Guess I'm a bit down at the moment :( The only thing I like about Christmas is.. spring is around the corner :D
