Hotbox detector: A device attached to the track which monitors passing trains for hot axles, and then reports the results via a radio transmission (US) or a circuit to the signal box (UK). (see defect detector).[31]
A hot box is the term used when an axle bearing overheats on a piece of railway rolling stock
Geez, you have been all over!! This video was taken outside our model railroad clubhouse! As far as the speeds are concerned,we have heard VIA speeds as high as 112 mph past that detecter! I live in Amherstview where the average is 60 mph heading in or out of Kingston.
@ConrailSD70MAC yea, you've never heard 112mph. The locomotives won't even go that fast. The overspeed function of the locomotive will stop the train before it goes that fast.
They're located at various points along the lines. There's about 5 or 6 of them located between Truro and Moncton, you just have to be close enough to them so that the scanner can pick it up after the train goes through.

112mph? Even when VIA has been running at 100mph, the detectors only read up to 99mph. I've never heard 100mph.

no way ! thats fast the limit is 65 mph for cn frieghjt through there !

That was the readout for VIA 64. VIA has a speed limit of 100. CN freights are 60...but intermodals can do 65 if under a certain length.

@ConrailSD70MAC Not sure about down east, but no CN trains are allowed 65mph out west.
