The 8960 would've come with the same Deere engine from the factory as that 8970. I know Kinze has repower kits, at least for the 30-50 series tractors.
Deere has used N14 Cummins engines in some of their self-propelled silage choppers, but they pretty much use their own engines.
Yeah, you're right. I have a 7800 silage chopper with the N14, and it does have a slightly different sound to it. I guess that the 8960 had an option of either the Deere engine or the Cummins or something like that, since mine has the Cummins (according to the engine's name plate), and it's stock straight from the factory.
Same engine yes but the N14 has an electronic governor. I don't know where you got the idea that it had a Deere engine. There was NOT an option for a Deere engine in either tractor. Another thing, Deere could not make an engine that good even if they tried.
what were the transmission options in the 8970's? Is a 24 speed a powershift?

LOL! Not a Cummins, unless it was a repower. Has a 14L Deere diesel.

Hmm..could be. I have a 8960 and it has a Cummins in it. I'm not sure on the 8970 though.

Ok everyone lets get this straight!
8960=855 Cummins
8970=N14 Cummins
