  • hey!thanks!

but I want to know a lot... haha.

I play piano, and I don't think i'm the best pianist out there... (vids on my channel...)

but I'm definitely not bad. (i just don't practice enough.)

My parents don't want me to go to music school, and my piano teacher doesn't know that I want to go into music...

I'm a classical pianist, but I love other styles (particularly new age and pop). Could you tell me what you think?

PS. I have NEVER done jazz before...

  • Hey! Thanks for doing this! I am from Manitoba and have heard so much about how great Berklee is... I am very interested in coming this summer for one of the summer sessions specificily guitar sessions... Do you know what these sessions are like? Also just wondering about yearly tuition... ive heard that for international students tuition + Room and board cost over 50 grand!!?? Are there available scholarships??

  • @openhighway99 The summer sessions always very productive, a lot of fun, and lead to some great relationships/connections. Yearly tuition, for me (including staying on-campus), came up to about $40k a year. There are, however, many scholarships available. If I were you'd I'd phone Berklee and ask them to send you a detailed list.

  • i'm from honduras and i'm currently stuying at my country even though my first choice after high school was berklee, at was discouraged at applying cause it just could get any way to pay for tuition and stuff like that because it would result even more expensive than usual being an international student...i tried to get financial aid but at last i couldn't because i don't have any person that is an american citizen that could be a cosigner for me in order to apply to financial aid...

  • @dencarias i also tried to get information for scholarships but they semeed even more difficult to get because berklee asks for extraordinary talented musicians to be considered for scholarships and i'm good at playing my guitar but not that good as to earn a presidential scholarship haha....is there any way you can help me giving me tips on how to solve the money issue cause that was my only limitant...did you have that problem too while applying ?

  • Was it hard to get in?

  • hey i just saw this video and thankfully i wanted to be in berklee.. though i have one flaw in this plan.. I am a huge metal person, and i dont think theyre all big on metal ... what do you suggest? im a guitarist by the way. thanks if you help! :)

  • @metaldedicated4life Oh my, Berklee has so many metal/prog players!

  • @sideburnsbob

    some ear training exercises?

  • I just have a question about auditions. as a drummer what would a good example of an audition be. im sure that for percussion you audition snare timpani and marimba or vibes, but i am wondering if you or any of your drummer friends have any advice for what pieces to perform. also what about a drum set? i think that soloing to "sing sing sing" would be cliche enough to be a good choice. just let me know what you suggest for a drummer and if you can describe the audition process for percussion.

  • also how is it for music education? is the audition a little less intense? anyway thanks so much for doing this!

  • @MeTsRoCkMySoCk13 I will send you a private message - I have a URL to send and comments don't allow for those. I will answer both comments.

  • @sideburnsbob can you send me that link also? I have the same questions

  • hey sideburnsbob ive got my heart set on berklee but ive been getting a lot of negative comments, the biggest one being that you cant find a job once you leave berklee..im not sure whether you've graduated now or whatever the case may be..but what is your opinion as a student about that?

  • @TheRhythmSection101 I am graduating this semester, so I understand your anxiety. Your success in finding a job requires you to have a real go-get-em attitude, especially in the current economic climate. You must also realise that finding a job in music is very much a self-motivated affair, so one can't really blame the education at all. I know professional musicians who have visited Berkle and marveled at the education, so the school gives you the weapons, you just have to wield them.

  • Wow...if your still there numbnuts....that was crap...now go ask if I can teach U2 something better than what I just had to digest...gross...xox Shower up...do it again OK...now...this time w/feelin...anything just do it again...xox

  • @NancyPizzotti I have no idea what just happened.

  • what are you gonna work when you're out?

  • @marcosinemb I am planning on a career as a performing singer/songwriter, though I do wish to pursue voice acting, composition and screen/stage acting too. I am a performer :)

  • LOL, and I actually laughed out loud at the "feel compelled to message me part." good one haha. Anyways, I was wondering, since obviously Berklee seems to take care of being exposed to and around music, that if there are opportunities for students to do things outside of music, like extracurricular type things, sports, hobbies, etc. What kind of stuff other than music does Berklee have? Thanks, Sarah

  • @sarahxboxbeara Berklee has an ice hockey team and we occasionally get a football (soccer) team together to compete locally. There are many clubs here too - I can't list them all off the top of my head, but I know that there is a meditation group, a journalistic/writing club and ... haha, come to think of it most of them are actually music related!

  • hey man my name is jake sabetta, i started watching your videos because my mom knows your aunt and uncle , Nancy and Doon Wintz and told me about you, I'm a jazz guitarist too, I live in Mendham New Jersey. I'm pretty sure i don't have the stuff to get into Berklee, but i'm going to Interlochen this summer, so I've been looking at colleges with music programs and i just wanted to know what standards do you have to have to even make an audition or get accepted to good conservatory?

  • @jakethejuke227 Ooh, well - that's a tricky question to accurately answer. All I can say is that you need to know your basic major/minor scales, arpeggios and triads. You also need to have an idea of 7th chords (Major 7th, Minor 7th, etc). Sight-reading is also something you should be able to try at least. Just make sure that you are generally proficient on your instrument.

  • Dude how did you get together enough financial aid to go to Berklee. I am scared cuz thats my issue right now

  • @narakusgirl2006 In all honesty my family is the reason I'm here - I would not have been able to afford this, but my family came together to help me through.

  • @sideburnsbob Lucky you. I wish my family would do that except they can't...Thanks for your answer though. I hope to go to berklee this fall!!

  • @narakusgirl2006 good luck :D

  • What percentage of people who go to Berklee received a scholarship? I really want to go more than anything but the tuition is exorbitant without a scholarship.

  • @jazzmatik I wish I could tell you, but the majority of my friends have scholarships of some kind. They're not as rare as they seem.

  • first of all i want to know how expensive the college is. I am a drummer from Tijuana, Mexico, and i know that Berklee is the best. It would be a miracle if i could educate myself there. and second, how is the admission exam? i don't have any clue.

    i will apreciate any info.

  • @234rhuib The college costs approximately $20,000 per semester (including a place to stay). The audition is really a test of your abilities as a musician - they test your reading, performance skills, improvisation, harmony skills and listen to a prepared piece. What instrument do you play? I would be able to help you out more if you could tell me.

  • I am going to apply for Berklee and really want to get in. What are some of the major things they are looking for in applications and auditions. Any advice would be great. Thanks

  • @KeepingRockAlive Have you check my video with Roger Brown? You might want to watch that, it is has some good information on that. From my perspective they are looking for someone who is eager to learn, to contribute to the world of music and the Berklee community, someone with a great deal of potential and with the spirit to go out into the world and make a difference through music. Does this help?

  • I play the piano and I want to audition at Berklee at the summer program for a scholarship.

My jazz skills are not that good at the moment, Ive just begun getting jazz lessons (about 4 months ago). I usually played classical piano on a high level (for about 11 years). Do you think I have any chances to get a scholarship? Or that they might see an advantage in having played classical piano and having the basis for developping jazz skills? By the way I am from Germany :)

  • @nightcr4wl3r91 Hello there! So sorry I didn't reply earlier - my notifications don't pick everything up. I am also a classically trained pianist and it has helped me enormously in my musical training at Berklee - it really provides you with a solid foundation and Berklee recognises that. I cannot guarantee a scholarship though as that all depends on your ability as a player and not on your musical education, but 11 years of solid playing will have done you well!

  • @sideburnsbob thanks for the answer :) no problem ive been waiting a while, but happily you answered :D so one more q:

i got into the summer program this year :) and want to audition for the summer semester beginning in 2011 there, i decided to play a challenging classical piece which also shows my technical abilities, then what else do you think they expect to see from me?

And actually I want to get into the music production and composing major. am i allowed to play my own composition, too?

  • I GOT IN THE SUMMER PROGRAM!

  • @ALEXV1951 Congratulations! I'll be seeing you soon!

  • i dream about berklee everyday and wonder the lifestyle. My friend who got in says its a great thing. But i always wanted to know, what is the audition like? Whats it like learning there, is it stressful, fun, exiciting, or overwhelming?

  • In all honesty? It mixes all of those aspects, though for me it tends to fall in the overwhelming and fun categories most of the time - and not overwhelming in a bad way. There is a lot of work, sure, but once you get going you'll spend most of your time doing a ton of musical work on top of school - which, as I said, is fun and overwhelming. If you love music - which I'm sure you do - then it'll be no problem!

  • Bob, I auditioned Saturday, and I feel things went well. The man in my audition seemed semi-impressed with my jazz, but one strange thing happened. He asked my desired major, and I told him the MP&E program. He got oddly stern and explained how insanely competitive the major is. I told him I have not made a distinct decision, however. Do you suppose If I attempted to change my desired major to music business, if my chances of acceptance would rise? I considered the change prior to my audition.

  • I wouldn't worry about this at all - what your say your desired major is when you come doesn't affect the outcome. When I went I was torn between 3 of them! When I declared my major in my 2nd semester, they were equally stern - in my reckoning they want to really make sure that this is what you want to do.

  • Hey man, i'm a guy from India and have been playing guitar for nearly 5 years now and i've always wanted to go to Berklee college of music....i know that an international tour will be held in my country and maybe i'll try for the auditions. But the problem comes in financial terms....my family won't be able to support the financial requirements....are there any ways for me to support myself?...does the college provide any par time jobs?

  • Ah ha - fantastic question. There are many scholarships available here and you are more likely to get one if you are in a tricky financial situation - they will automatically consider you for a few when you audition.

There are also part time jobs available on campus - usually 10-15 hours per week.

  • My auditions are in two weeks. I was planning on performing the piano, violin, and guitars (classical and electric). I was gonna play a song for each instrument, which will take about 3-4 minutes per song. Is that too much? Also, should I bring my transcripts and my SAT scores or send them to the school? ooh, I'm gonna have alot of questions. Also, will Berklee be hesitant in accepting a student with financial problems? Also, what happens if jazz is not your strong point? Thank you! Go Berklee!

  • Oh man - you're going to have to decide on one instrument. Many of us are multi-instrumentalists but chose our strongest to audition with - this is crucial to having a smooth audition/interview process.

Your transcripts can be faxed to the admissions department - just tell them beforehand and send them with a cover letter. You can also bring them in person and they'll make copies - up to you really.

There are many scholarships available, so have no fear - and jazz? Not a problem at all :)

  • My strongpoints are the piano and guitars. Should I choose the piano or guitar? or can I play all 3 (piano, electric and classical?) Thanks. I heard you get more scholarship opportunities though the more instruments you play. So does that mean I have to show them my ability to play those instruments? or just play one or two?

  • Hey, I live in Boston i've always wanted to go to Berklee... i go to northeastern now. ANYWAY, I know there are a lot of fields you can study there, and i'm a mediocre musician who has a strong passion for music... are auditions MANDITORY for all applicants? Is it specifically for performers? I want to work in the industry and i've always wanted to go to Berklee but i feel if i audition i may not get in.

    Thanks man,

    Breanna

  • Hey Breanna - auditions are manditory for everyone, but not everyone's goes smoothly - your application counts and your interview too!

  • Oh and if you'd like to meet up and chat, then private message me!

  • hey man,i have a question about what the auditioners are looking for, so , in the audition they are looking for ''monsters of music'' or ''potencial'' in music?

    Thank you

    take care

  • I've been thinking about how to approach this - I would say potential is high on their list, but they're obviously not going to turn away someone who is ridiculously good too. Even the best musicians have more to learn, so I think that they run the auditions like that - you could have the best musician audition, but if they are not willing to open themselves up to learn and improve, what is the point? So, I'd say an open mind and potential - voila!

  • Auditioning for voice at Berklee on Dec 5 (in two days!) with Soldier of Fortune by Deep Purple because there's a great spot in the middle to improvise over. Just wishing luck to everyone here who's auditioning and hoping for a little luck back ;)

  • How did the audition go?

  • @sideburnsbob Pretty solid, thanks. I felt really good about Soldier of Fortune, maybe got about 80% of the call and response (rhythm and sing-back combined). I think my sightreading (which I'm usually pretty good at) was my worst, but I made it to the end. I felt like I had a very strong interview though. Feels about the same as when I auditioned at Belmont, which I've already been accepted to, so I'm hopeful. If I get in, it'll be between Berklee and Belmont, and it won't be an easy choice.

  • FOUND OUT I GOT IN LAST SUNDAY! Planning on going to Berklee unless I get a ton of money from Belmont. I've heard from anyone who's been to Berklee or heard about it that you REALLY gotta be outgoing about getting out and performing to make it. Do you think it would be better to hunt down some people to jam with the moment I get there or hunker down, hone my skills, and get used to the environment?

  • Congratulations! That's wonderful news.

Well, this really depends on what your goal is - what do you play/what is your vision for yourself as a musician?

  • I play some guitar and piano, but singing is definitely my strong suit and that's what I got accepted for. At the moment, I see myself as singing with a touring band but I think it's a bit early to get specific. I know I could use experience both with a band and practicing alone, but I'm just wondering how urgent it is to find a group to jam with if that's what I ultimately want to do.

  • Hi my friend, my question(s) is this. Which is the music background that Berklee requires (music theory, sight reading, instrumental)... and in the auditions, is really important how well you know you're instrument, how complex is what you're playing or just having a good performance is enough...?..thanks!

  • Hello there! Well, I would say from experience that during the audition they are looking for a strong sense of musicality and passion; that is to say that sight-reading isn't such a big thing, nor is a background in music theory. These are things they will teach you here.

I believe that they want to know that you have the capacity to grow as a musician and performer, and are passionate about music - so show that through what you play!

  • so it means you don't have to read music to have a chance to pass the auditions?

  • It helps, but it won't destroy your chances at all - it is a school after all :)

  • Hi, I have my audition December 12th on trombone, and I can not find an audition piece for the life of me... I'm thinking of doing Lush Life by Billy Strayhorn, arranged by Mike Tomaro for full ensemble... Do you think you could ask around for me about input on this piece or possible suggestions? Thanks a lot...

  • Hey buddy - well, Lush Life should do you just fine. Just play out with conviction! Make sure that the tune, and the arrangement, allow you to speak as a musician and to communicate your passion - if this is all set, then you're ready to go.

  • I have an audition on december 5 on alto sax. I have prepared Scrapple from the Apple out of the Charlie Parker omnibook, and am fluent in all styles of improv, tho i plan to improv over a standard funk progression. How is the school for an aspiring sax performance major, and am i on track for my audition?

  • From what you've just told me, you should be fine - great tune - your improvisational experience will be a huge help too, just don't count on playing a style of your choice - they tend to throw wild cards at you.

There are many sax players here and as far as I know there is never a dull moment for them - many, many opportunities to play.

So, yes - I think you're all set there! Good luck and show 'em what you've got! More than anything else, have fun.

  • thanks man i appreciate it, hopefully i will be attending next year!

  • hey do you if i can ask for them to send me a hand book by mail on their website?

  • Yes you can - I can't post URLs here, so I'll have to direct you. Go to Berklee's website then click on Admissions > Domestic Students > and then find the link that asks them to send more information.

  • Alright Bob, i got a question here - What do you know about what the professors like to hear during the audition? Mine is February 6th of next year, and I have been working on a Charlie Parker piece learning chords, walking, melody, and improvisation all on bass. Do they prefer more modern pieces or is a standard such as this acceptable?

  • Oooh, they'll love it! Trust me, this might be a contemporary music school but there is a huge love of Jazz within the faculty - not all, mind you - but the vast majority absolutely love Jazz. Charlie Parker is a great choice.

  • well sideburnsbob, im flying up to boston on the 23rd of this month for my audition. i work very hard at playing guitar, i practice every day for at least 3 hours. but the thing is im completely self taught. and im worried that it will effect me getting in. also i have played piano for about 13 years now. but guitar is more of my instrument of choice. do you think being self taught will affect my chances of getting in?

  • Not at all - don't let that detail worry you. I'd say that about half of the students here are self-taught. What you need to do is show them what you've got and be fearless - let them see how much you love music!

  • thanks man today i actually just got my acceptance letter in the mail. cant wait to study music there!

  • Congratulations! That's wonderful news!

  • is it fun like musician institute?

  • Well, it is fun - but it is also very hard work :)

  • What do you think about starting at Berkley during the summer? Is it a good idea? Any thoughts would be helpful.

  • Summer is great - less students, a bit more relaxed. Though bear in mind that the semester is 3 weeks shorter, so everything is a little crammed. I had a great time both Summers - less people, more open - but the work is a little more pressing.

  • i have a question. Does it really help if you can play more than one instrument? Ohh wait, two questions :P. Is the process complicated when you are applying from another country? thanks :D

  • Playing more than one is always a good thing - just pick your best for the audition!

And applying from another country? Not really complicated - the visa process was the complicated part.

  • hey man.. look im extremely passionate about music and i think its my destiny, cuz its the only thing that makes me happiest.. and i would kill to get into burklee.. but ive heard its pretty expensive.. so could you tell me how much itll cost per semester.. and how many total semesters there are.. plus .... does it really help.. cuz ive heard alot of people say you dont need to get into burklee to make it big as a guitarist.. and im reaaly into metal.. n i dun think thered b a techer tching metl

  • Well, it's about $14-22,000 per semester, but you can come for as long or as little as you want - 8 semesters gets you the full degree. And metal players? There are tonnes here!

  • Hi bob, well all you said abt getting that F1 visa etc was more or less true. Armed with her instrument and a supply of pg tips she got to the five week course and is having a ball, doesnt want to cme home :( thanks for all your helpful notes/hints/tips

  • I'm glad that I was able to help and I hope she's enjoying the five week program - I may have bumped into her unknowingly!

  • Well, thankfully my whole family is pitching in - I'm also working out some scholarships too. Scholarships and loads are the backbone of students' support here - Berklee has many, many options available.

  • Hey! My biggest question is price. How are you paying for it? Loans, family? I come from a pretty poor background but really want to go! any advice?

  • My whole family is helping me out - but most students here have a combo of family, scholarships and loans - there are many avenues - try them all (it can take some time, so don't lose hope!)

  • Thanks for answering my question. This next one won't be a factor at all in deciding wether or not I want to attend, but I'm just curious; What are the ladies like at The BCOM?

Oh, the irony of writing 'no comment' in the comment box lol

  • What's it like being so far away from your family?Do they live in Scotland? I'm sure you can't go there every break to see them.

  • Well, I've lived away from home for quite a while now. They do live in Scotland and I don't get to see them that often, and while it can be quite hard it is wonderful to be able to use Skype to talk to them. Nothing is like real contact though - I have been home twice since I've been here and I do miss it. Having good and supportive friends here makes it a great deal easier though - and doing what I love :)

  • im from sweden and my biggest dream is to get into berklee. im a singer and thats what i live for. im practising the piano and guitarr but im not that good yet. isthere any chance to get in without being insanely skilled with an instrument?

  • Of course there is! Berklee isn't looking for the best players in the world - they are looking for people with potential, passion and creativity - they will teach what you need to know, and what you want to know.

  • afraid I won;t be good enough to audition. Aswell as reading music, I have no idea how to read bass notes, which knocks out sight reading and bunch of other stuff. Can it be that i learn all of those skills at Berklee? or do I have to have those skills and education beforehand?

  • Don't forget that Berklee is a school of music and is looking to give you an education - I was entirely self-taught on the guitar when I auditioned and really didn't have a huge amount going for me in terms of being a 'real' guitar player. What they are looking for is potential, the thirst for knowledge and the passion to better yourself - Berklee will teach you everything you need to know - it's what they are here for :) Don't worry about your weakness, focus on your strengths.

  • Hey I was just wondering a few things about berklee, cause I found out about this college like a year or 2 before when I was doing a college research report for school, and I was just wondering if it's mandatory for the applicant to have had professional lessons before applying for the school rather than just having personal experience and growth with rather impressive skills? Not saying I'm impressive, but I've been playing for about 2 years, and I feel compelled to take lessons because I'm

  • hey, i have one more question... what style of music would u recommend people to play at the audition? do they get tired of people playing classical and jazz for it?

  • Mmm - I would say anything that moves you and you are visibly passionate about. Even if you play jazz or classical, if you have the passion they will see right through the style. I played a pop song and then a contemporary guitar piece - so it really is up to what moves your heart.

  • okay sounds great! thanks for ur help :)

  • hey! this is very helpful of u, taking time out to answer people's questions, so thanks a lot!

i'm interested in studying music therapy. i have a bachelor's degree in psychology already... do u know if that'll exempt me from courses or be of any help at all? also, is berklee interested in what grade u've reached on ur instrument? and are there a lot of violinists at berklee?

  • It's my pleasure :) Chances are with a BA already you can transfer all your general education classes - that would cut out up to 30 credits of work (possibly more) and leave you free to study from the classes of your choice without feeling hemmed in to complete other classes. Your level on your instrument will be reflected in what ensembles and advanced performance classes you can take. There aren't a huge amount of violinists here - a few, but not many - more opportunities for you!

  • do you know jenna bollard.

    I got to NEiA.

alot of you bitches is cocky. but i love alot of you folk

  • also, does berklee allows dual major with MP&E...??

  • Berklee does allow dual major with MP&E - and as for the mathematics aspect? Well, it would help to have basic skills, but I know that what they look for more is a good GPA and academic standing (whilst at Berklee). There is a mathematics proficiency, but if you don't do so well then there are classes here to get you up to speed - I know that they do their best to accept students and help them achieve their goals :)

  • thanks for the help....you are really quick...thanks again.

  • Hi...i wanted to know that can i take MP&E even if im from a non maths background..i totally suck at maths..but i really wanted MP&E...

ive hrd they take some maths proficiency test....

but is it really hard to get MP&E??...especially if you suck at math.

  • Do you have to play an instrument to go to Berklee?

  • You do indeed, no matter the degree you are wishing to pursue. You don't need to be the most amazing player, but you do need to be fairly proficient and willing to improve. The theory behind it is that the more musical you are - even producers, etc - the better you are.

  • I know this sounds like a stupid question, but does Berklee or other music schools really care about a student's GPA or their ACT and SAT scores?

  • Well, it does give them an idea of your academic capabilities and how you may perform academically at Berklee. Whilst it is a music school, the full degree programs does require that you complete 30 liberal arts credits and so you will have some classes similar to those at a regular college. Like other schools Berklee requires that you maintain a minimum of a 2.5 GPA whilst you are here - this is probably the best way of them being able to keep track of your academic progress whilst here.

  • I love November Highway, Robert. I listen to it on repeat. I'm going to listen to it when I finish typing this. If a song of yours sweeps the nations, that will be it. Anyway, I am going to Berklee this Fall, and I have a question. I am a keyboardist, and I plan on doing a lot of gigging when I arrive. Is there any point in lugging my big amp all the way up to Berklee, or will they have amps up there I can use? ( Preferably 180W or more, like mine. )

    Thanks!

  • Thank you - I'm glad you like the song :)

Where are you coming from? It may be worth your while to bring it if you are not coming such a distance as Berklee doesn't usually allow students to borrow the amps here - in fact I don't think they do, unless you are playing on campus. So you should probably bring yours - it will save you money and make gigging that much easier.

  • I'm coming from Mississippi, which is a long way away. Yeah, I'll bring mine then. It's just a big load, with my amp/keyboard/everything else. I don't know how I'm going to get it up there!

Anyway, thanks dude. Maybe I'll see you this Fall.

  • btw, your song bright november highway is so so good. i really dig your sound man

  • Thank you :)

  • whats the drop out rate like? i heard its really high. im pretty curious of what to expect and am fearing that the competition will be too much for me to handle. maybe i'm just worrying too much? see you in the fall

  • Hey! I thought I'd replied to this but discovered I hadn't!

The dropout rate is about 50% - don't worry about the competition. Most of the people I meet here are real with their music and are genuine about meeting new musicians, collaborating and helping others achieve their goals.

  • hi.. ok at berklee, are you required to be able to play 2 instruments, or only just one?

and do they recognize technical ability too, apart from the musical/compositional ability?

    please answer!

  • Just one instrument - if you play more, then cool!

And technical ability is something that they will really consider - all aspects of your musical ability can count - they don't just consider one of them - so if you are very technically proficient it will definitely be in your favour.

  • If my fingers are of wood... can i play shred in a short time?

  • my question is... That the videos I have watched about berklee guitarists are not amazing and I want to know if most of the people really have skill or most of them are just vai or petrucci wanna bees? Im asking this because I take guitar really seriously and I want to go to a colegge where I am surrounded with people who like me practice more than 10 hours a day for example.

  • Interestingly enough you tend to see less videos of the guitar players who excel, as they are the ones who practice for 8-10 hours a day. My favourite drummer at Berklee, Ekin Cengizkan, is rarely seen anywhere but studios, practice rooms and his basement; he practices for about 10 hours a day, on top of full-time classes.

  • I'm a sophomore in highschool and want to get into Berklee on bass. I can play well in virtually every style, and I'm good at sight read, but I have trouble with the "call and response" pitch thing. Is that going to be a problem?

  • Not at all - if you have difficulty in just one or two areas and are good at everything else then you can bet that those difficult areas will be the ones that Berklee can help you iron out. Being able to sight-read will be a big advantage for you over many applicants.

  • Goodee.

  • Would having an associate's degree in the arts help me to get in to Berklee and while attending?

  • Having an associate's degree in the arts prior to coming to Berklee would definitely be a plus when it comes to applying and it would mean that while here you would be able to skip many of the beginning classes and focus earlier on; many students have to spend a few semesters working through the basic classes before they can specialise. In this way you would be at a considerable advantage.

  • How much is berklee gonna cost?? I know its alot... and how can you afford so much?

  • Berklee is fairly expensive - there many scholarships available and on-campus jobs - if you can get liberal arts credits before Berklee you'll save yourself a great deal of money. You're looking at $35 - 47000 per semester (includes meals, etc).

Thankfully my parents and grandparents are incredible at saving for things and so we've practically been saving for this my whole life ...

  • ok because i just have this mindset that berklee is for only the best of the best, and that i have to be a crazy good musician, but that is why i want to go to berklee, to become a crazy good musician...

  • hey man. my name is james and i'm 15. i have never wanted to go to college until i found out about berklee. now it's all i want to do. i am in 10th grade, and i know i have time, but trying to get in seems very daunting, bc. idk if i am good enough. i mean i practice for hours everyday, but idk what the chances are of me getting in. if you could help me out that would be great, because berklee seems amazing...

  • Your chances to get are really only set by you - the more you practice, prepare and hone your skills the higher your chances are of getting in. This doesn't mean you have to go nuts, but practice every day - and continually find those things that you find hard and work out the creases. All you need to do is be able to notice your improvements day by day and week by week :)

  • Do you feel that it is worth it going to Berklee as opposed to another college/university to study music? Meaning..what does Berklee give you that other schools don't?

Another thing..do you happen to know how many "Writing and Composition" scholarships they give out to incoming freshman? Not sure if you know, I just couldn't find that info anywhere.

  • I thoroughly recommend Berklee - as an institution it is the sheer breadth and scope of their vision that gets me. The intensity of the program here and the astounding resources that are available to the student body.

About the scholarships - that's something that I can actually go and ask about and find out for you - so I'll go and do that!

  • My friend wanted to know if there were a lot of horns around. Like trombones/trumpets.

  • There are indeed - they aren't the most numerous of the wind/brass instruments (the saxes take that prize). I know 3-4 trumpeters personally and a couple of trombonists - and that's just personally, I know there are more as I see quite a few big band and jazz ensembles with sections of them.

  • Do not go to this school if you are a horn player...all your classes will be filled with wannabee rock musician guitar players.

  • I'm starting Berklee this fall, and i'm a little hesitant on whether or not i should stay in the dorm..being an international kid, people say its probably better if i stay in the dorms for at least the first semester. Are the dorms alright? I also heard that it can be cheaper living in an apartment, is this true? i read that the space is insanely limited, how fast do they usually fill up? last question, little random..do you know if there is any decent skiing around the boston area :) ? thanks

  • Some great questions here. I would recommend the dorms - even if only for the first semester. It's a great place to get to a lot of people very quickly and for that reason I would recommend it. The dorms themselves are great - spacious, air conditioning, internet, great staff. Apartments can be cheaper, but you really have to start looking soon - the cheap ones go incredibly quickly - and also tend to be the furthest away from the college.

  • The dorms do fill up quickly, so best to apply now.

As for skiing - I have friends that live in Boston and go skiing regularly - as MA is quite small getting to any of the ski places isn't that hard, and the snowfall in the winter is great.

  • I sent you a homing pigeon 3 months ago. Guess it didn't reach. How long did you practice in high school? Did you practice everyday? For how long?

  • Oh man .. I heard that some of the homing pigeons were involved in a bird-strike incident - yours might have been one of them! I will hold a pigeon-sized funeral lol

To be honest I started guitar and singing just as I graduated from high-school - I played on and off for a couple of years and then played solidly for about a year or two before I auditioned. For the two weeks before my audition I played each day for about 4-5 hours at least - I went kind of nuts because I'd never really practiced!

  • Yea. R.I.P. pigeons

You're amazing. I didn't think anyone could get into Berklee unless they were raised up with their instrument and practiced for hours each day. That's some reassurance considering I practice 2 hours a day. I play double bass by the way. Is double bass a common instrument at Berklee?

  • Ah, the double bass! There aren't too many of them, but people love the bassists out here - you guys get a lot of work :)

I know a double bass player who is from Japan - the thing is he is tiny - about 1/3 the size of his instrument, so all you ever see when he takes it around is a double bass - and crouched underneath it is this tiny Japanese guy lol

  • Sounds like me in 7th grade. :)

  • lol You guys are hardcore!

  • Lol :)

Are auditions in Berklee "hard"? How do they work?

  • Great question - they could be considered hard but I think that it's mostly nerves that make it seem hard and the fact that it's Berklee - psychological factor there. They ask for a prepared piece, sight-reading, call-and-response and, in my case, improvisation over different styles - they will most likely ask you to play different styles as you guys have to know a great deal about that.

  • So if you mess one not then you're screwed?

  • No, just try your best - many people fall hard at one of the obstacles - just remember to see it more as a challenge, something that CAN be done :)

  • Had my audition on december 6, but now i have to waqit till march to find out if I'm accepted, i'm dying here to know the answer. great you're at berklee! and boston, loved that city. Watch my video with the song i played at my audition.

  • Did you do Early Action? Because I'm pretty sure they'll tell you on January 31st.

  • well the thing is I applied for Summer 2009. there's no regular or early action in that semester lol, you just apply. And in berklee's website they say decisions for that semester are taken on march 1.. but I really wish it was january 31! really i can't wait till march it's killing :p

  • Oh okay. I didn't realize they were auditioning people for both semesters that day. Anyway, hope you got in!! :)

  • Auditioned yesterday. I did very, very well! Maybe I'll see you up there next year.

Thanks again for all your help :D.

  • Nice one! It's been my pleasure - I'm sure you did well - take care, and hopefully see you too!

  • another thing, don't know if this is a stipid question but...at berklee do you need to take basic courses like math and english?

  • Not a stupid question at all! There are math and english courses - but these really depend on your high school or previous college transcripts and how well you did there. Because I'm international I still had to do some advanced English classes, but I didn't have to do maths because my grades from my high school (and the level I did) was fine ...

  • are u italian?

  • Wow, I've never had Italian before! I'm actually from Scotland, but it's cool that you thought I might be Italian ... nice :)

  • This is awesome of you to help poeple out like this. I know Berklee is a jazz oriented school. I personaly am in to classical/neo-classical. and i cant decide if this is the school for me. is it strictly jazz or do they work with all types?
