For everyone considering this surgery, let me say, depending on the type of flat feet you have, this procedure is great, and after 14 long years of pain, this surgery made my feet brand new. I have no pain at all. I had a different surgery that was very extensive and huge, and it did jack shit. When I got this one, it worked so well and it is cheaper than the first one would have been if I had had to pay for it. But we had tricare primary which covered the first one. I highly recommend this.
I've used custom orthotics several times, and while they help with my knee aches and back aches, they usually make the soles of my feet hurt! So I can give up one type of pain for another. I hope this surgery pans out as I am seriously considering it. I'd like to hear from some folks that had this done several years ago, and what their current status is. Flat Feet Suck!
I went back to the Foot Doc today and had the stitches removed from my right foot. It looks beautiful. I still am awestruck that I now have arches for the first time in 46 years. Life is good. I advocate exhausting all conservative options first, but if they fail to give you relief, I highly recommend these newer sinus tarsi implants like SubFix by MMI and similar products such as Hyprocure.
@beenieweenie100 Hi, I'm your age and have had the same problems with my feet, I've had the custom arch supports and do all kinds of exercises and joint supplements and whatever but still my left foot and ankle just throb! Do you feel that this really helped you and did you get a arch back? and what is the recovery time? my job consists of being on my feet all day. Thank you for any info you could give on this!!
@goldenoakretriever I'm now 3 mos post op on my left and 2.5 wks. on my right. I have two beautiful arches for the first time in my life. My Dr. is adamant about being non-weightbearing for the first week, so the soft tissues heal around the implant to prevent it from backing out. Since I also had a gastroc recession to lengthen the achilles tendon, my recovery is longer than someone who just had the implant. By 8 wks. my left foot & ankle were pain free. I'll pm you with before and after pics
@goldenoakretriever I lack the expertise to explain this properly, but the term for the condition is called equinus. Gastroc recession basically weakens the lever force of the leg. When the gastroc is too tight it creates an abnormal amount of tension on the Achilles tendon which in turn creates tension on the heel and too much tension on the plantar fascia. Bottom line it creates a painful tug of war.
@goldenoakretriever An afterthought I wanted to share. According to my doc there is more than one way to lengthen the achilles tendon, you must be careful to choose a method that will not permanently weaken the muscle or tendon or dramatically increase the possibility or rupture or injury down the road. Search Youtube for the video "Gastroc Recession for Pediatric Flatfoot Deformity" from Dr. DeHeer.. My son also had this same surgery in July 09 & Jan.2010 & his muscle strength is normal now.
@beenieweenie100 Are there any sideaffects of hyprocure procedure and how much is cost to do this surgery, any insurance opportunities available, because bi have heard that this surgery is very expensive???
I will tell you that it is far less expensive than the reconstructive surgical remedies of the past that were far more radical, somewhat irreversible and less successful in many instances. My insurance (Anthem BCBS)covered all except for a copay for the outpatient surgical center. Now just to be clear I did not have the Hyprocure implant, but a newer, yet similar product called SubFix from MMI. My Surgeon has used both SubFix and the Hyprocure implant.
@sandocean17 The SubFix has only been available since May 2010 and I was one of the first patients my Doctor used it on and has since done several. He has much greater success with the SubFix than with the Hyprocure. He has not had to remove any of the SubFix implants due to pain or backing out. He even had a geriatric patient who responded extremely well. I think any surgery is going to be expensive, but this is definitely worth it for the relief one gets.
@sandocean17 It took me little while to gain strength in my leg muscles after the gastroc recession but I am now able to walk miles and spend lots of time on my feet, that just would not have been possible before. Recovery time is contingent on the extent of your dysfunction & the adjunct procedures done with the implant.Mine were done in Aug. and Oct. 2010 & I am still seeing improvements. I expect to continue to see improvement for the next year or so.
Seward custom orthotics actually work for some ppl., I was fortunate in that they did work for me for a while and my insurance did cover them BUT I am so thankful the orthotics bought me time, because when I was your age the only foot surgery that was available actually very radical involving bone grafts tendon transfers and not reversible. It often created more problems than it cured. I ran into many people at PT who opted for the radical surgery 10 years ago and now their feet are a mess.
I had this procedure done on my left foot 3 mos ago, and my right foot 2 weeks ago. I had the SubFix from MMI not the Hyprocure and thus far have been pleased. You also need to be aware that depending on your individual situation the stent alone may or may not be sufficient and you may require other adjunct procedures to resolve your problems. For example I also needed a gastroc recession and the doc did platelet gel injections on my plantar fascia on one foot. Do your homework. So far so good

I'm a dancer and having flat feet is the worst possible thing because dance (especially ballet) is about using your arches and pointing your feet. it's nearly impossible for me
I think...this guy is full of it and is advocating a unecessary and dangerous procedure. You shouldn't be messing with a persons feet. You f**k up, that's it. your walking/running days could be over. I'm an avid runner and, for about 2 months, have changed my running to barefoot running...or using one of the various minimal footwear available. I've also read, that by engaging in such lifestyle changes, flatfeet can possibly be reversed. I dunno for sure, maybe something 2 look into. :-/
I wanted to respond to your comment because I had the very same issues as you. I was told by my foot "doctor" that I needed to buy $500 orthotics that MUST be worn every walking moment for the rest of my life because of my "flat feet" that can be fixed in no other way. I'm 21 years old and I just found this "advice" to be completely unacceptable. I did a little research and found the book called Fix You Feet, basically the problem with our feet is the shoes we wear.. Check out Vibram shoes!
I used to be a runner and i can't run anymore. I got plantar fascitis. I went to the podiatrist and he told me i had flat feet. He gave me some insoles but they don' tseem to work. Does anybody recommend me to try those 200-300$ molds or try another insole?
@yellowman88 Don't do the expensive custom inserts. The insurance companies don't cover them for a reason. I was diagnosis ed at 13 with flat foot in both feet. My parents paid like $150 + for each insert. I was told they would help and that it would eliminate the need for surgery in the future. Wrong! I am now 19 going on 20 and my feet have been getting worse the last 3 years. I now need surgery on booth feet. Do Surgery.
@Seward282 What kind of surgery do they need to do for you? is it this procedure or the more radical type with months of recovery? I too am close to having something done but am Leary of going under the knife and not having any guarantees! and this almost sounds to good to be true! will your insurance cover any costs?
I have SEVERE flat feet and i HATE it. i stand on my feet 10 hours a day 4x a week cause of my job and i cannot take the pain. i have orthotics, special shoes and an ankle brace that i wear. NOTHING helps, i am still in constant pain =[
it has been a week since i had this operation to solve my flat feet problem. after 6 days i took my bandaging of and i saw for the first time my foot had an arch which i was very pleased and i can walk little distances but i have to wait a couple of months before i can play sports :( Over all the pain isnt too bad but my mum dose pester me to keep taking more pain killers.
Does the operation really help to lift arches of the flatfeet and futhermore to get rid of the flatfeet at all? Anyone has done that operation?Whom the operation may help?
I had this surgery, and it did not work for me at all. The implant had to be removed. It was hard to move my foot with it in and it actually hurt even more with the implant. I also saw no change in the appearance of my foot.
It works for some people. But it didn't for me. The orthopedic surgeons I saw after I had the surgery said they don't recommend it. And I was one of two people that my doctor had to remove the implant from.
Really? I got my flat feet surgically corrected in 1997 when I was about 6 and I've had nice arches ever since and I don't recall pain at all. For the past three years I've been on my school's cross-country ski team and track team and my feet never hurt.
if its only just been picked up and was told to u casually u probably only have slight flat feet. flat feet would not increase ur balance if anything it makes it worse cause ur feet bones are in the wrong spot so are ur ankle bones, then ur knees and hips which makes u more clumbsy.
now i understand why i cannot run as well as other ppl in my gym class when i was in high school. i have back pain and i dont know if this is because i have flat feet. i am going to try buying arch aupport
i have flat feet but i dont really have SEVERE pain. after i watched this video i realized something. after i would run or something my feet would burn like it was on fire. and when i would take off my shoes it would hurt. And after I run the next day I would have back aches. I never realized until now that it might be because of my flat feet...
i think its safe to say that we all have flat feet, but do u guys also have bowed legs and one leg shorter than the other. to top it all off i have short legs to begin with. i just want to know if there are any other atheletes around who have the same problems that i do
i have bow legs n flat feet, but ive always been a great athlete which is something ppl never understood and even myself. id say the only problem i have is as im getting older, i have to warm up more often before playing then i did before.
This is probably because flat feet do make your other muscles stronger, because they have to compensate for your bones' lack of ability to support your body. However, your endurance is probably not what you want it to be, unless you have trained extensively in that aspect.
Wow; I do not play sports but it's good to see I am not alone. I have flst feet also; my feet arw not in extreme pain, but can hurt just a little at times like if I walk in heels for a long period of time. I just hate that I can't wear (well on't wear) too many high heels.
Right With You Guys. I'm In My Teens And I'm Unable To Walk Today, As The Pain It's Causing Me Is EXCRUSIATING! I'm Seeing A GP Tonight Who Hopefully Should Refer Me To A Podiatrist. Ouch!
@christiansizer wow, I said that 3 years ago. And no, I hate to have flat feet. Can you share your experience with the implant?, I believe this is great.
@maakkupaax Yes. I might have a different case of flat foot from you, but this surgery worked exceedingly. It is a little sore because I just got it. I highly suggest it.
I have always had flat feet...and I mean FLAT..didnt really bother me until I was about 36 and now my achiles, ankles, knees and lower back kill me. I have tired legs below the knee and ankle and heel pain constantly...I wonder if I can afford this procedure and if it really works.
You're lucky. I got cut from the team my senior year because I would finish the 5 mile run every day, and after that, not even be able to walk. The pain was so much, I couldn't take a step without my leg giving out on me. Plus walking feels like the tendon in the bottom of my feet is ripping apart with every step.
I think some flat feet are a lot more severe than others. I wish with all my life I didn't have to quit the sports I loved playing, and that I could afford this surgery.
i cant participating in my college team becoz my flat feet can support me playing basketball for long time. sometimes flat feet leads to lower back pain as well.
it hurts real bad like what u said, with every steps that i take, it jus hurt so much, especially after half an hour playing non stop.
After a footscan my podiatrist says I've got flat feet, but I have no pain in my feet nor do my arches look flat. I've had chondromalacia (Runner's knee) for 4 years now, so I must have developed flat feet from my knee condition.
I've got severely flat feet, and I'm in pain all the time with them- point of the matter is bits of your foot that shouldnt be touching the ground are- and this puts pressure and strain on certain muscles in both the foot and the leg that cause a looot of discomfott.
i agree with the pain, but not all people with flat feet have pain, but from what I have read, those without the pain - can actually run faster than those without flat feet.
I just found a site for shoe inserts by a Dr. Pryce (flat feet insoles) that help correct the pronation of flat feet and I am going to order them to try. Hey, $40 has to be way less than surgery and I'll know in a week if it works.
Wow I aughta tell my podiatrist! I have severe flat feet. Now I'm dealing with morton's neuroma because of it. It messes with my knees because my flat feet over pronate. I need the surgery because it's causing all kinds of problems.
Hey, someone else with Morton's neuroma! Mine are pretty severe to the point where it's hard to walk or stand some days. The other surgeries he's talking about were pitched to me 2 years ago; I'd be getting out of my second cast right now if I had done it so this is exactly what I was hoping to see
omg i hav flat feet i reali wish i cud get sumthin dun bout it, cos yh it hurts like hell, u cnt do much excersise,u ache all the time and its so hard to do wot other kids do is there ne other vids on youtube about this surgerey?
i have flat feet too =( i love basketball so much... but somehow flat feet restrain me from participating competition. coz if hurts when i play. real sad...

@maakkupaax You said you hated the foot surgery procedure? Why?
Because I just got it
christiansizer 2 weeks ago
@christiansizer wow, I said that 3 years ago. And no, I hate to have flat feet. Can you share your experience with the implant?, I believe this is great.
maakkupaax 2 weeks ago

God bless.

After a footscan my podiatrist says I've got flat feet, but I have no pain in my feet nor do my arches look flat. I've had chondromalacia (Runner's knee) for 4 years now, so I must have developed flat feet from my knee condition.

i have flat
feet i now wear orthtotics inside my shoes and my feet are just fine! i got no problems i can do everything people with high arches can!
but when i had falt feet and didnt use orthotics my feet were aching all the time!
and it messes with my knees.
but now my orthotics lifted my arch a little bit
so i got no problems!

I've got severely flat feet, and I'm in pain all the time with them- point of the matter is bits of your foot that shouldnt be touching the ground are- and this puts pressure and strain on certain muscles in both the foot and the leg that cause a looot of discomfott.

actually, people with flat feet can run faster.
itstastybacon 4 years ago
not really :/ it hurts to even walk sometimes
ahazzamylady10 3 years ago 3
i agree with the pain, but not all people with flat feet have pain, but from what I have read, those without the pain - can actually run faster than those without flat feet.

Rose71346 4 years ago
:D its weird to find other people with flat feet!
uberspecialfizz 4 years ago 3
Hey, someone else with Morton's neuroma! Mine are pretty severe to the point where it's hard to walk or stand some days. The other surgeries he's talking about were pitched to me 2 years ago; I'd be getting out of my second cast right now if I had done it so this is exactly what I was hoping to see
