  • The Manhattan Bridge (Brooklyn, NY) built 1909.. still standing. The Silver Bridge was not that old in 1967 ! It was in its prime as a bridge. Without the defective eye bar, it could still be standing strong now.

  • @PositivFritid 2002 The Mothman Prophesies starring Richard Gere.

  • @MrBSylvester Yes I have watched that a couple of times, love it :)

  • @PositivFritid I just saw the movie today which prompted my search for the real story.

  • It's a wonder that the old train bridge, seen beside the silver bridge, is still standing to this day.

  • @GenX6887 The railroad bridge..I am thinking they refurbished it or remodeled it or something years ago.

  • @MickeyMorandini1 Didn't know that

  • we traveled that way every year to my grandparents in Indiana, I crossed that bridge about 6 months before collapse.

  • i bet the moth man was in california NYC and japan

  • @soldier2975 may be you are right, but if he did this in Japan, he gets stronger than he was

  • @soldier2975 well in my apartment at 5:00AM i swear i saw a bird like thing flying 500 feet in the air then i heard something like a nuke had exploded thinking my car blew up

  • Good lord folks. I guess the Mothman was hanging out in Japan last week as well. I don't understand how people connect this bridge tragedy to a "mothman". It is nonsense.

  • My grandparents, aunt and my mom (she was like 3 then) were on this bridge on the morning of 12/15/1967,,. just hours before it collapsed !

  • This is a cool song, has the Patsy Kline feel to it!

  • A sad event.I pray for those who lost their lives that day/ I was born that very day.

  • What's interesting is that the mindset of the designer was similar to that of those responsiblel for the Titanic/Gigantic/the third one?...too much confidence in a single part of a design. In the twin bridge design, the designed was lulled into complacency that the high tensile steel obviated the need for redundancy. Proof that the BBC showed was that the pitting and stress cracking was almost as bad as with milder steel. The Titanic also had problems with brittle steel.

  • What I found most interesting in my own investigation into this whole matter was two "Men in Black" type figures were seen snooping around the end of the bridge minutes before it "suddenly collapsed". Did this whole "Mothman" story have anything to do with Black Ops and UFOs?...most definately. As for the movie,it was ok. What was great about the movie was it brought this matter up for more public discussion. I highly reccommend John Keels' :The Mothman Prophesies...THE BOOK. Excellent work.

  • u know there was alot of sightings of mothman till the bridge collapsed and then no more sightings so what happened if he was killed by the bridge he could have lived under there

  • This bridge collapsed due to bad design and maintenance. Dowel pins that formed the suspension links had worn and rusted nearly through, and were unable to be inspected because of the link's design. Years went by, and the defect was never noted because it was hidden. This bridge was built by profiteers in the '20s, not any government agency. When profit enters the public arena, watch OUT!

  • @DeserTBoB93535 And when the government builds anything using government contracts, look out. It works both ways.

  • @DeserTBoB93535 well that may be partly right, but, they actually found the particular eyebar that caused the entire bridge to come down.It wasn't really the failure of the dowel pins initially, but, when the eyebar broke. The pins then worked back out of the other eyebar and it vibrated off of the pins. The weight caused them to twist, and, when the one support fell, the entire thing fell.

  • @DeserTBoB93535 If you go to "The Silver Bridge Disaster" video here by BBC OU or OUlearn,it describes it in detail, very informative video in 3 parts.

  • @crowleysridgegirl Excellent coverage! Thanks. There was a report published that blamed the dowel pins proper. I didn't see that they'd actually recovered a severed eyebar, but your explanation makes sense. In that sort of suspension system, an unbalanced load on a circular load bearer will cause that bearer to move away from the load, which explains why the whole eyebar set went down just as well as a broken dowel pin. Either way, it was a marginal design.

  • @DeserTBoB93535 Well your explanation was a lot more detailed and technical, and,I'm certainly no engineer.A report, not sure if it was the BBC one or which, described that: when the fractured eyebar gave way,the remaining load caused the dowel pin remaining to twist. The bridge should have been designed for the remaining structure to be able to bear the load should one member fail, but,it wasn't.Apparently the eyebar had a hairline crack when it was first cast.

  • @crowleysridgegirl Yes, the design and materials and (lack of) maintenance were all at fault. Also, vehicles in the 1960s were about three times heavier than they were in the 1920s when the bridge was built.

  • @skifusya You can say that. But the George Washington Bridge was built around the same time (1931) and it carries 280,718 vehicles per day. Metropolitan traffic. The Silver Bridge, without that one eyebar defect, most likely would still be standing today ! (but would no longer be US 35, we will never where/how the alternate "freeway route" would have been constructed if the Silver Bridge had not collapsed)

  • Wasn't the collapse do to like a moth creature aka mothman

  • @ghettochildlB

There is some stories about the bridge collapsed due to a sonic boom from the mothmans wings, and a "man in black" character called indrid cold, I think.... There is a movie with Richard Gere called the Mothman Prophecies, good movie, but if you are into the supernatural causes, the movies mixes up some of the facts....

  • @ghettochildlB II think mothman tried to WARN us about it!

  • @ghettochildlB No.The Silver Bridge collapsed due to a hairline crack in an eyebar that occurred during the casting of the high strength steel that it was made from. When that eyebar broke, the rest of the structure couldn't handle the remaining load and the entire bridge came down.Do some internet research, and you will see.I'm very familiar with this bridge and personally know the ladies that operate the Point Pleasant River Museum. Those are just stupid myths.

  • @ghettochildlB The story ive heard is that the mothman was trying to warn everyone because most sighting appeared around or near the bridge. It was said the creature was trying to warn the people their. But whats really strange is that the Silver bridge collapses and the mothman was their. Type in the search box mothman at 911 and you will see a picture of a winged creature much to large to be a bird flying away from the wreckage of 911

  • @ghettochildlB ...."The MothMan Prophecies" is a movie with Richard Gere...The movie is well done. Not a typical Gere role...quite surprising and quite good...Riveting . The movie is based on "The Mothman"...apparently seen throughout the history of mankind dating back to Roman times or thereabouts...and a sighting of M-Man means cryptique impending doom..." Whatever brought you here, brought you here to die"..Google it...The movie is great..."Wake up number 37".

  • cool

  • Anyone remotely interested in the history of the Silver Bridge tragedy must visit the Point Pleasant River Museum at 28 Main Street downtown . . . excellent videos of survivor accounts.

  • the old photo at 2:27 is a much older than 1967 vintage and sometimes identified (incorrectly) as the remains of the Silver Bridge collapse.

  • Thank you very much for the information. I am not an expert on this, just got very interested in the real story about the bridge after watching the movie about the Mothman.

  • you're welcome...i crossed that bridge MANY, MANY times in childhood...we lived about forty miles away and on sundays, we'd travel just to be able to see and cross the unusual structure. we'd usually then eat sunday dinner in gallipolis, oh. of course, that would then mean a cross back over the silver bridge to get home in winfield, wv.

  • Indeed this photo at 2:27 in the Silver Bridge segment is the much earlier collapse of the Elk River Bridge.

  • OMG i never saw a clip of this be4

    thanks for post
