I agree with cridantes. That's his approach to playing the character, people. Many actors will tell you this, if asked. AR doesn't play cardboard cut out villains. He prefers that they have some depth. To do this, the actor must portray the character as if he believes he is right, as if he (the character) believes he is not a villain. He simply wants the money, at any cost.
Good lord, he's speaking in terms of acting, of portraying a villain on screen. He's not talking about immoral, unethical, arguably evil people in history.
Die Hard makes it very easy to, if not sympathize for Hans and his gang, at least root for them in some ways. Overall it is a very anti-authoritarian film, largely portraying the police and Feds as incompetent and mindlessly brutish, respectively. Hans may not be a good guy, but he's smart, and charming.
At the very least, Hans Gruber is one of the most charismatic bad guys Hollywood has ever come up with. Even though he is the bad guy in the movie, you can't help but be charmed by him.
I read the 2nd top comment first, "oh! watching him in glorious bastards was just one permanent drool." I was like wtf?! Hans Gruber was in inglorious bastards?! Then I read the top comment.... =( haha
Ok,Alan, have another hit of acid, lol. If Hans Gruber isn't a villian then Osama Bin Laden was a 75 year old librarian with a wicked penchant for lavender panty drawer fresheners. ok,kidding. That IS was he is playing as an actor. PS. I wanna lick his face too.
@Dustwitch I want to lick him too but that being said I hope hope hope for Alan's sake that he never never plays a Nazi. The world would condemn him if he tried to say 'Nazi's aren't bad people they just have a checklist of things they want to achieve' Alan seems to enjoy being contradictory. He's played some of the worst villians in movie history. They are bad people. Period
@GrissomLovesSara I don't think you get what he is saying. He doesn't care if you (the audience) want to judge a character's morality. He's saying that he doesn't judge them. That's his approach as an actor. It would be very difficult to portray a three dimensional character if you view them as a two dimensional villain.
@MsAppassionata You make a fair point. He's not telling us how to judge his characters only how he goes about playing them (brilliantly) but he does seem comfortable playing 'devil's advocate ' as they say when a person seems compelled to suggest the last thing someone else expects or really even wants to hear. Then again, he's not responsible, nor should he change his own opinions, in deference to popular opinion or sentiment. Forcing people to think outside the box often incites criticism
Ok,Alan, have another hit of acid, lol. If Hans Gruber isn't a villian then Osama Bin Laden was a 75 year old librarian with a wicked penchant for lavender panty drawer fresheners. PS. I wanna lick his face too.
Ok,Alan, have another hit of acid, lol. If Hans Gruber isn't a villian then Osama Bin Laden was a 75 year old librarian with a wicked penchant for lavender panty drawer fresheners.
@Myathewolfeh1 don't be rude, he looks more deeply into his characters other than "good guy" "bad guy" and gives them more thought than that ... which is WHY he is such a great actor!
@JDavis4U I wasn't being rude. In fact, I absolutely adore Alan Rickman's acting. I just think there's no point in explaining his character if he explains it himself when he plays his characters. It's because he's so good at becoming the character that makes me wonder why he even gives the time for an interview when all that is needed to be said is right there is his superb acting.
So if somebody burgles his house he isn't allowed to be angry about it. The burglar is just an individual who wants certain things and is going after them.
hes not a villain he just has an english accent, all english people are "bad guys" when there are all american heroes near by to defeat us but the rest of the time we just drink tea.
one of the reasons they picked rickman was that they needed a european guy who despite how thick his accent is can imitate an american perfectly so he can talk he can have a dialouge scene with bruce willis without using CB radios nor nearly getting his head blown off.
@Shanethefilmmaker They discovered Alan could do a really good American accent after he was given the part. I can't remember how they found out, but that's what gave them the idea (or, actually, if I remember rightly it was Alan's idea) for the scene with Alan and Bruce Willis.
His point I think is that bad people, villains, rarely think of themselves as bad. They believe they are going after what they want, what they deserve. And as an actor, he must approach being the character that way as well, otherwise the villain won't be believable.
And as far as I am concerned I want to meet Alan Rickman whatever it takes, I've made my mind... He is the first celebrity that makes me feel so. I really respect him and adore his acting skills. Wish I had been born much earlier... I have known him only for one year :SSS
@nxebn Go to see one of Alan Rickman's plays or to one of his movie premiers if it's in or near your home town. He often comes out to meet with his fans and sign autographs.
@MsMesmer1 Actually we are not even on the same continent, But I will be in Europe via Erasmus, I would definitely try my best to see him, if I could get a visa to England, I guess you can't just get in UK with Schengen, right? Thanks btw... it's good to know he is easily accessible :))
in truth, Alan doesnt really like to play villains but he is great at it. he likes to play the knight in the shining armour sometimes. from what i heard in an interview.
@EchoBoomer1987 Even though Ellis wasn't the best guy to be around in real life due to his attitude, he was damned funny in the movie though. I loved him and his actor was funny too. I wanted him to become a recurring character... TT.TT We lacked comedy in Die Hards 2 and 3 until Warlock came in Die Hard 4 as the comedy.
Hans Gruber is my second favorite villain of all times. PM me for my first. But first take a guess... First name begins with R, last name is Black. ^^ Fancy a guess?
My goodness. No wonder he gave up playing villains for awhile. It's almost exactly word for word what he says while dressed as the Sheriff of Nottingham when interviewed briefly for the Bonus DVD that comes with the extended version of RHPOT!
