I think the camera was made well, it hung low so that when the lion lowers its head, the chin doesn't get in the way. It was strapped by leather belts (wrapped in duct tape), with stood beating, was never taken off, did not affect the behavior of the lion. I'd say this experiment was successful. My question is why have the ability to transmit video if they can simply retrieve the came when it was done? Couldn't it already store video info? Or is the extra weight?
Allow it, they should at least put it on it's back like the sea lion. It already has a radio collar, why not incorporate a radio collar in the camera.
I want to put a critter cam on my house cat my cat goes missing for weeks then comes home, I want to know where they go, one has been missing now for 3 weeks, and one showed up today after 2 weeks. such a mystery to me
Calm down everybody. It obviously didn't hurt its hunting because they saw it hunting and then eating its prey. It's only done for a week, and its triggered by remote to come off. They don't need to tranq it again to get it off.
I imagine it suffers more abuse when it gets kicked in the chest by a pissed off zebra :P
The cameras were not nigth vision cameras, they had lights on them that disrupted the lioness's hunt at night. Next time they should use real night vision cameras.
its infrared light, which the lions can see but things like zebras cant. if anything it was like giving the lions a giant flashlight only they could use.

they are torturing the lioness with this camra stuck to her neck they should have some mercy ..she cant even hunt with this camra on her neck ..damn ..they act like they are re searchers ..re searchers my ass
It was only for a few days and at the most it gave the babies something new.
It seemed not to bother their daily lives much.
Its not like they are watching lion TV constantly they took it off.
I thought it shows how they interact with one another it can aid in helping baby orphaned lions get rehabilitated and help its human caretakers in making sure it grows up like a lion.
It has many uses the con only being she had a collier around her neck for a little big whoop it has to be done.

That critter cam thing looks so awkward, big, clunky. This video reads like a poor defense for funding the project ($7k - $13k a pop?). With all the technologies we have thesedays, is this the best tool for gathering wild-life data?
@tooltalk who the fuck do you know how "big" "awkward" and "clunky" these cameras are. have you ever fucking worn one? I didnt fucking think so, so shut your mouth
@TheHitchhikingHippie what the hell is your problem? LOL someone's on their period...
@tooktalk and people are more interested in entertainment than discovering the world around them nowadays. haven't you noticed the news makes headlines about celebrities and ipod advancements when they should be making headlines about the war and politics?
@iceshard24 : eh? how do you know what I'm interested in? I don't watch TV, nor do I enjoy watching the CNN coverage of war / political porns. No, the fact that you listen to endless thoughtless dribble, propaganda from BBC, Stewart's Dailyshow or Democracy Now, NPR, doesn't make you look any smarter.
Do you guys really think the lions care about a radio collar and a darting? It suffers more inconvenience in an everyday hunt... maybe you should go feed it
I FEEL SO SORRY FOR THOSE POOR LIONS!! How would they like to just randomly get hit with a tranquilizer dart?!! :'( And then have some annoying foreign object strapped to their neck? I would be PISSED.
We need to have radio collars on them. And the crittercam...which was probably a ittle inconvenient, really helped research on Lions' daily lives. Yeah, it sucks, shooting them with tranquillizers...but we have to do something to get the collars on the lions so that we can keep an eye on them.
This kind of surveillance is good for the lion species. The researchers are able to acquire information about lion life they wouldn't be able to by watching them.
seriously, all of you people who say take that stuff off...you try finding out more information about these animals behavior so we can save them without getting yourself killed. these camera's are nothing more than a minor bother to these lionesses. maybe you idiots should be more concerned with their shrinking habitat and them getting killed by farmers because, as the video said, they have a "taste for cattle."
People are upset about the critter cams? "Oh no! It looks uncomfortable!" "Oh no! The tranq-darts look sharp!"
You complacent latte-sipping dumbfucks! You insipid pussies who've never stepped foot in real outdoors without a tour guide & a camera! Why aren't you bitching about the fact those lions aren't eating well-cooked food that might have (gasp!) gerrrrms in it? Or about the fact that lions sleep outdoors...IN THE FREAKIN' RAIIIIN! Oh my! Oh no! Did I violate your urbanized virginity?

They aren't in pain, and they obviously don't give a shit because they still hunted and went about their daily lives. Animals need to be drugged to be radio collared to be PROTECTED, or else they'd all be poached to the end of their species or we'd never know how to protect them.

This seems to be too much. Humans already annoy them enough. Just doing it one time maybe. But with this success they will do it over and over. Just improve their environment and get the hell out of the way. Thousands of dollars in equipment could be used to create a better habitat. Sometimes I feel the scientists are being selfish and want to fulfill their aspirations more than do the right thing.

My only beef with this idea is that the camera is so bulky. The lions gotta lug it around while hunting. But, I guess is doesn't hurt them.
