thank you joni for writing this and thank you roger for if i was in hospital with the pins and needles and pipes pretending it's worth hanging in for i'd have to die to your vocal of this song
I wish I could play guitar with the emotion he "sings" with, and write songs as awesome as this. I feel honored to be an apprentice, learning from the masters
Nightmare creatures on the prowl, the full moon light the chilling howl! The flasking fangs the savage growl, I've looked at wolves that way. But now I'm told they don't come near, they run away they hide in fear. They'd rather pre/ay on elk & deer. I looked at wolves that way. I looked at wolves from both sides now, from shy to bold but still somehow, it's wolf illusions I recall, I really don't know wolves at all.
Wow! Más allá de lo fantástico ... un espectáculo hermoso y terrible ... sólo me conmovió tan profundamente .... les encanta !.... Gracias por subir. ~ Descansar su alma en paz ~
I love this song so much...................................Joni Mitchel sings it good as she would with it being her song but in my opinion this version is brilliant
What a great great version of this song.I like listening to this song after a ruff day.It really puts me at ease.A glass or two of wine, good music, and good friends. Thanks!!!
Joni wrote an amazing song, and she sings it fantastically. However, it seems it was written for Mr Whittaker - the combination of an amazing song, with a unique yet simple voice - moves the human spirit beyond words.
I am curious where this great version was performed given that the artist suggests the author is just a bit north. Mr. Whittaker received important health care in my home town, Markdale, Ontario. He donated generously to the hospital of my birth afterwards. Boy, he sings this song beautifully.
@michaels7 There is a live DVD of Roger from Edmonton and Joni was born in Saskatchewan. So my guess is this is the Edmonton concert and when he says not to far away he doesn't necessarily mean north.
He's doing it Judy Collins style' which was a big hit record for Judy. Joni's early recorded version with just her and her guitar didn't get much airplay' but I have to say that her more recent 2000 version is the best one I've heard.
At the Vancouver 2010 OlympicOpening Ceremony, the Both Sides Now performance was interrupted by the commercial breaks. It really spoilt millions of viewers' mood, including me!!!!
A beautiful rendition, second only to Frank Sinatra's on his CYCLES LP. People often associate this song with woman singers (Mitchell and Collins), but Roger and Frank make it a man's song as well, especially for middle-aged men who have experienced what the song describes.
ryecroft57: Maybe it's associate with woman singers because Joni Mitchell wrote it, and Judy Colllins who first record it in 1968 got a Grammy for it. BTW Frank also recorded it in 1968. But you may be right about the "middle-aged men" part. Joni wrote it based on the novel "Henderson The Rain King". It's about an unfulfilled "middle-aged" man looking for spiritual contentment.
You're right, YT. And while I like Mitchell's and Collins' versions, I love Sinatra's and Whittaker's because the song is written fromthe perspective of a middle-aged man (like how men wrote "The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down," but it carries more weight and pathos when a woman sings it). I did not know what inspired the song, so appreciated learning that. Saul Bellow is a favorite author (Herzog, Mr. Sammler's Planet), but Henderson has thus far evaded my nightstand. Thanks again, YT! --Gary
RW is a fine singer with a lovely voice. I've heard him with pleasure since his recording of "The Last Farewell" was released in the US some 35 years ago. But for me, "Both Sides Now" is most moving with minimal accompaniment. Compare, for example, Judy Collins' recording and Joni Mitchell's performance of her great song on "The Johnny Cash Show" circa 1969-70. Mitchell's performances are on YouTube and I'm 99 percent sure that Collins' is.
I've always liked Roger Whittaker. I can discern something honest and genuine in his voice. I also like Bob Dylan. No two artists could have styles that are of greater contrast. But one thing they have in common. They both have an honest voice.
I know you loved RW so much. I listened to a few for you this am . As I was always honest with you I have to say this is the only one I could stomach. I love you and I will take care of Sean, I promise you.
A girl from my 8th grade wrote a song to this tune & our choir sang it on the last day of school. Its chorus was "I've looked at school from both sides now, from bad to good but still somehow, it's just the good I think of now. It really wasn't bad at all. Good tribute to this song.
Há muito que ouço Roger Whitaker. Gosto da sua voz e de muitas das suas canções. Esta é uma delas. Também gosto da versão desta canção de Engelbert Humperdink e de Frank Sinatra
This is a classic and one of my all time favourites.Originally penned by Joni Mitchell in 1967, it became a world wide hit for Judy Collins in 1968. Covered by so many artists, including the late, great Viola Wills, who recorded a stunning disco version. Paul Young (wherever I lay my hat) also recorded his super slow interpretation. Roger Whittaker's version is one of my favourites.Listen out for his mix up of the words in the final verse ....
The greatest testimony to a singers talent is when their music is sung generations later (classics). That is true, with songs and singers. This man is a classic, a legend and his music will remain for many, many years to come. Class and talent never die, and are always appreciated.
I wrote a 2 verse parody to this song.."Nightmare creatures on the prowl. The full moon glow the chilling howl! The flashing fangs, the savage growl! I've looked at wolves that way. But now I'm told they don't come near. They run away thet hide in fear. They'd rather pr(a/y)...on elk & deer ! I've looked at wolves that way! (chorus)...

Roger Whittaker is great, he has such a strong voice, that colors his notes. I was into Rock in the 60 and 70s but I listened to Roger, he was that good and from what I see he still is
This is sooo funny with the Dutch subtitels! From which channel was it recorded?
I think one word is actually translated wrong, kinda funny. When the lyrics are "dreams and schemes and circuscrowds" schemes is translated as "schema's" in Dutch. This just means the mathematical scheme, while I think the meaning should be more like "(devious) plans" which could be translated with "plannen"
But apart from that I think the translater did very well.
I have to agree - RW is fab ! this song just doesnt show of his vocal talent the best. My favourite of his songs is Mon Payes Bleu (i think thats the right spelling)
Let your friends laugh. I wonder if what passes for music in THEIR opinions will still be played and loved in 40 years time.

I absolutely love Roger Whittaker. His voice is so mellow and beautiful to listen to.
