  • @Swed040 Aretha wrote this song.

  • How can anyone dislike this fucking song *FORGIVE ME LORD*

  • As good as it was 30 or more years ago. A classic - so timeless - played at my sisters husband;s funereal just this year - we all grew up on RERE. A flawlees live perform by THE QUEEN of SOUL and MUSIC period!!!!!

  • Maybe I'm selfish, for lovin both.

  • Our QUEEN!!!

  • this song gets me to the very depth of my soul it pierces my heat! now this is trult soul music

  • I love you so much. You're one the most beautiful soulful singers that reach down deep in a person's soul. Girl, girl, girl........

  • My favorite singer in the whole-wide world, Aretha Franklin and I love you!!!!!!

  • That's what the Lord want us to do: Call Him!!!

  • @scbella: I agree with you 1000%.....that is a very true statement. The standards of excellence in music are way down low.....no pun intended...lol !

  • ez ám a hang!! nem is a Tolvaj Renié!!!

    Meghalok ezekért a gyönyörű nótákért!

  • ez ám a hang!! nem is a Tolvaj Renié!!!

    Meghalok ezekért a gyönyörű nótákért!

  • call me the minute you get there

  • bloody awful dancing..ruins a wonderful vocal performance

  • If ever a doubt as to why she is called the Queen of Soul, here it is. You'd better sing the hell out of that song Aretha.

  • The Queen of soul, true music royality, please stay with us Aretha get well soon

  • KYM WHITLEY COULD PLAY MS FRANKLIN

  • I have only seen two people sing on You Tube sitting down live and still kick ass vocally one is Marvin Gaye and the other is Aretha Franklin that tells you something about the gift God gave them and they have enriched so many people's lives through their music and creativity. When you hear THEM SING YOU HEAR ANGELS SING WITH JOY .

  • @TheNewsoul2 don't get me wrong, I really like Aretha. she's really talented, and i'm definitely not trying to compare either, because i'm not that type of person. but make Patti Labelle the 3rd person when it comes to sitting and sanging.............or even lying on her back or even rolling around more than once on the floor with the mic still in her hand while she's still sanging. there are only a few good "sangers" now, but nothing can compare to the back in the day "SANGERS"....lol.

  • I love this lady and her music. Her music is always in rotation long before the surgery AND STILL REMAINS. QUEEN OF SOUL MS ARETHA FRANKLIN I LOVE YOU AND GET WELL SOON. #NOTHINGBUTRESPECT #LEGEND

  • She's definitley the Queen!

  • i like it. incrediable voice

  • this woman voice is beautiful sing mrs franklin

  • ive always had an unnatrual attraction to this song

  • For 43 of my 61 years I have had Aretha...she has enriched my life, made my heart sing with her music and made my ears realise what they were made for.... no one can match this Lady of Soul.

  • There was a reason Rolling Stone named her the singer of the century....simple and plain

  • A true artist. Not a singer today compares.

  • @douwd20 there are a couple but some are deceased sadly.

  • The special with tom jones - i remember the night this was broadcast - great television.

  • 2:21-2:26- Her timing is absolutely rindonkulous! The way she sings the phrase "call me the moment you get there" a shade behind the beat, yet ends right on cue. You barely notice her even sing the word "me". The best, the absolute best.

  • @Chimier U are 100% on point!! Arethas Phenomenal timing at 2:21-2:26 was Dangerous and Fierce beyond words!! No other singer has the ability to be as Vocally Acrobatic with the speed, timing and Soul Artistry as Queen Aetha does with such ease!! Sho U Right Climber, Arethas Timing aint nothin' to play with!!!

  • its like someone opened up a can of soul and poured it down her throat !! so soulful

  • I know that as people age they say that "those were the days." But my god what in the hell is this now?? My own personal experience and analysis: republicans and the last 30 years.

  • and we all still are in love with you tooo

  • Aretha brought the house down effortlessly with her hair wrapped up in a scarf... Come on, she is the REAL DEAL! Not like these artists today that need wigs and weaves and pounds of makeup to market themselves. We will NEVER see pure talent like this again.

  • man this is my shit

  • Epitome of soul !!!!!!!!!!

  • Aretha cuts up like no one else! I LOVE IT!

  • Haunting.......

  • Back when just singing was enough. You didn't have to dress in underwear, look a certain way, or be able to "dance" a jig to be a big star. Models were models, dancers were dancers, and singers were singers. Music WAS beautiful!!

  • my lover m'appelle trop i must to cut my line ohoh!!!!!!!!!!

  • I really like this song

  • I was a teenager and in love when this came out. My love was in a band that was on the road. This song meant so much. We had so much great music for so many years.. I see that now that I can look back. Whew

  • Aretha Franklin, everyone. There ain't nobody else like her.

  • love her then loving her now

  • I wish the video quality was better but Aretha's voice IS SUPREME. I just can never stop watching and listening to this. The whole performance (dancers stage) and of course Aretha are perfect.

  • Oh how I love this song!!!,Brenda Battle Jordan.

  • Sing the song QUEEN!

  • slum village feat. kanye west- selfish

  • Damn I keep coming back to this performance. WOOOH! KILLER QUEEN REE!

  • Her voice is so beautiful!

  • Hitting all the note while sitting down ! HOLLA - ALL HAIL TO THE QUEEN !

  • Absolutely Awesome!!!

  • i second that!

  • Aretha in her prime has a magic no one else can touch. What we see now is simply the result of the corrosive acid of time. Something we are all slowly cooking in. I love her for devoting her life to sharing her gift.

  • As much as i love Ms. Tina Turner, this particular song has to be by far the most favorite song of mine by Ms.Aretha!!!!!!!

  • The fabulous Undisputed Queen of Soul,Gospel,Blues,Jazz,Big Band, and Rock, Miss Aretha Franklin has just BLOWN ME AWAY,MESMERIZED AND ELECTRIFIED the hell out of me with her UNIQUE,COMPLETELY RARE,100%SOUL ARTISTRY at its finest! Aretha simply has the VOICE OF GOD!! The POWER,PASSIONS,RANGE,BEAUTY and the SUPERIOR TECHNICAL SKILLS of Queen Arethas regal voice is beyond HUMAN UNDERSTANDING! I just feasted my eyes on Arethas total BLACK MAGNIFICENCE and ineed, Aretha is #1 and the GREATEST EVER!!!

  • God, love the way she sings this song. She has that thing in her singing that is just so...real.

  • This is my favourite Aretha's song. I wonder why wasn't it a bigger hit?. This song reached only Nr. 13. It should have been a Nr. 1 hit.

  • YES!!! Why was I in Borders and almost caught the spirit when this came on!?!?

  • It did reach no. 1 on the RnB charts.

  • it was number one the r&b chart, she has always reigned supreme there. she has charted the most. she has 20 number 1's

  • Yes, I knew it was nr. 1 onr&b chart, but the song was so good, that it deserved to be Nr. on the so called Hot Hundred.

Aretha is the singer with the highest number of entries in the top hundred or top forty in the history, but sadly she had only two Nr. ones. One with "Respect" in 67. and the other in duet with George Michael in 87. "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me). She deserved much more.

  • Yes, she did. But numbers arent everything. At least all of rees songs, were superbly sung. and had substance. i would rather that, than her to have 20 number 1s, and none of them have any meaning or substance. this version should be released on cd.

  • i agree with monraydayizback the chart numbers dont matter its all about the song and the feeling in it because some people have number 1 hits that sound so bad

  • She's not the Queen of Soul ...

    She the Queen of Music.

  • You betta say that!!!!! Bravo!!! I agree.

  • I love Aretha, plain and simple. I have had whole nights and days of Aretha: Yes, I'm addicted to her. I agree with so many of you. We all love her. I hate that years of cigarettes and more than her share of really bad material that was just not meant for her has lead to a drop in her range overall, but there are still glimpses of the old Aretha when she is in good form.

  • For most of Aretha's singing life, it came effortlessly to her. There are many great singers but none with her control up and down the range. Patty has the voice, but not the same level of control. The built-in embellishments simply aren't there, so it sounds more forced and hurried. For Aretha it seems effortless and flows in seemingly limitless rivers of soul. Of course now its different.

  • Phil Perry :)

  • Thank God for recorded sound!!!!! Aretha's voice is timeless. This is one of my favorite examples of her brilliance! She is "The Greatest!"

  • Pure, clear and elegant. Aretha is magnificent. Today's singers would never convey the beauty of the lyric or the melody. There's no one like Aretha and Diana. (Yes, you can like them both. Different as their voices are, what they share is the most sophisticated and varied approaches to songs and a generally refined musical sense. The Pattis and Gladys' and Mariahs are limited in what they can sing even if they have strong voices.)

  • My ultimate favorite from Aretha. So romantic and soul-searching. Love it.

  • I'll be you're witness Soul Sir, and I entirely agree with you, cos nobody touches this Lady when it comes to expressing her soul. She's a fantastic and untouchable singer who's the essence of SOUL.

  • Everyone who claims to be the queen of anything has some huge shoes to TRY and fill!!!!!!!!!

  • Unbelievable!!! ARETHA is indeed the queen of the soul! I am glad that she came when she did because if she was around today she may not be recognized for how true and geniune her gift is...Garbage is ruling the airwaves today, so sad.

  • Comment removed

  • @scbella42 You are so right!!!!

  • Ree's voice capture the essence of, "soul" in this footage. Can, I receive a witness, somebody?

  • amen!

  • Right, on!

  • hey mr. peterpan wat u talkin about...i bet ur fav singer would loose her voice singing this song the way aretha does...but aretha made this song effortless and awsome

  • I think I got your point petergriffin9901. This is indeed a great performance. but it doesn't impress/touch me more than what she usually does

  • What are you talkking about, this performance was flawless. One of her best vocal performance.

  • lol i'm not saying she did something bad. being flawless doesn't mean anything. what i'm saying is that this is common for aretha. I just don't see how this performance is superior to what she usually does

  • This is not a common performance by any means. She is vocally at her best, hitting G#5 back to back. Not mean people do that and have it be so effortless. Because she is over vocalizing with long notes and runs doesn't mean much in my eye.

  • her voice is just so beautiful and pure

  • excellent, voice and song

  • This is why she is The Queen of Soul. Sheer brilliance, simply beyond category. :)

  • nicely put.

  • there is no one like Aretha Franklin she has the most unique voice that has ever been heard. she is really a national treasure. just once in a life time will you have someone with her phrasing of a song that can make you shiver in your seat. when god made her he said there will never be another like her. the one and only queen of soul

  • Without taking nothing from the mentioned artists that song this, (they are all talented in their on right) Aretha's voice is so uplifting and so powerful!!! Truly a God-Gifted talent individual! Sing on Baby...Sing on!!

  • Listening to this ABSOLUTE CLASSIC and seeing so many of our most talented cultural icons leave us, it makes me wonder about Aretha....

  • Jus gimme the number Baby i always have CHANGE when it's necesssary....................LOL

  • lord have mercy

  • Great Aretha!!!!! I love Her!!

  • Diana Ross did a great version of this too in 1970. It got her a Grammy nomination.

  • How could anybody compare the likes of Mariah Carey, as good as she is, with the vocals of this brilliant singer beggars belief. Here's proof to anyone who disputes the vocal powers of our wonderful Queen of soul, Aretha Franklin.

  • His name is Phil Perry. I really like his version too! I like his spin on it. This performance is amazing though! YES ARETHA!!! YES!!!

  • i love her

  • sang Aretha!

  • the story behind this song comes from Aretha standing on an avenue in New York waiting on a cab and she saw this couple saying goodbye and i love you...thus she went into the studio and recorded this lovely song.

  • This is the best version I have ever heard of this song! Does anyone know what other artist recorded this song? In particular I think it was a african american singing group. They had a singing style like the Chambers Brothers. It's a great version as well.

  • This rendition by Aretha is absolutely amazing, and is a prime example of why she's the legendary Queen of Soul. Her power is effortless, and her interpretation instinctive. Thats a natural gift that can't be taught, and comes staight from the heart, and after listening to this my heart is definately melting.

  • PREACH!

  • I see similarities with Aretha and Jennifer Hudson alot; with both of their effortless magnificent voices; thats why Aretha is the Queen and and people like Jennifer of the new generation will definatly make a mark in the business following in the footsteps of TRUE GREATNESS!!

  • i think mary's more effortless than jennifer along wih fantasia jennifer she's would be bu she take it over board with high notes they somewhat sound alot but jennifer she's too hard sometimes she gotta stop im a big rere fan too know that aretha here isnt tryna she simply just singing jennifer trys 2 hit 2 many notes maybe its just live cuz i have sum songs frm her album n there good but i wish she hit more notes funny huh but the differences is....

  • Damn!!! The vocal clarity, range and expression are beyond compare! Thank GOD for recorded sound! Her legacy is sealed! All Hail The QUEEN!!!!!

  • aretha the best singer!!!!

  • S T U N N I N G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love Sinatra and Ella and the rest but after viewing this there is no doubt in my mind about this woman's position as the greatest singer of the 20th century. Just listen to the awesome totality of that instrument, it's as if the angels were strumming her vocal chords.

    God save the Soul Queen!!!

May she live to be one hundred!!!!!!!!!

  • 12wizard i agree with you, finally someone telling the naked truth!! With all the greats that American music has produced there was a time when no one but no one could touch Queen Aretha!!! yes naysayers can argue about Aretha of today and rightly so! But in her prime and ONLY when the mood hit her (which was unfortunately not often enough) Aretha could truly evoke the voice of an ANGEL. I wept when first hearing this! The poignancy was quite literally celestrial!!!!

  • YES YES YES!

Your comment is as perfect as this womans performance.

    xx

  • Brilliant ! Brilliant ! Brilliant ! The greatest popular singer that's ever lived.

  • Sadly, Aretha cannot sing like this anymore. Decades of smoking and all of the weight on her diaphragm have made her voice garbled and distorted from it's original timber.

  • She may not sound like this anymore, but she can sure as heck SING like this still to this day-- as she has far beyond 1971, which is why she's forever the queen of soul- one of the greatest interpreters of song in life. Who Better?

  • a diva will always be a diva. no weight can that away. till mshe dies.

  • Does years of smoking really ching up your voice?

  • this song makes me miss my boyfriend who is in natal i love you baby always

  • She's the GREATEST ever! I can't believe she was thin back then.

  • believe it lol. but she was not thin here. but from from 65 and before she was very thin, had great shape and curves. then in 74 to 76 she was at her most beautiful period she was also thin to, but she started dressing good, most of the time lol.

  • Wow, she looks like a different person. The strangely-colored wig and the video quality don't help much either, but there's no mistaking that amazing voice. She's my favorite singer.

  • That's a head wrap on her head. She has her afro underneath it. On here search the video the partys over with tom jones and ree. Its clearer and she's wearing the same outfit. She looked beautiful eitherway though. Yea this is one of the greatest vocal moments in history.

  • So moving, but I can do without the weird dancing guy. lol

  • It is amazing how she just sits there and belts out this tune almost effortlessly. Not many back then could do it, and no one now can. God bless the Queen!!!

  • Aretha is the QUEEN and Elvis the King

  • RIP King.

  • One of the best clips on here. There used to be another live version of this song from montreaux. Was that yours also? It is not on anymore and I miss watching it. Thanks for all the great clips.

  • i Love u...I love u....I love u tooo aretha franklin

    wooh!

  • Jamia Simone Nash did an OUTSTANDING cover of this song...very emotional

  • tried lookin for it but i dnt see it

  • LONG LIVE THE QUEEN

  • Excuse my French, but Aretha sung the shyt out of this song!! She sung it better LIVE compared to the album version!!

  • best performance i ever heard, puts today's artists to shame

  • i think 1971 was Aretha's best year her voice was just pure magic listen to this and then check out Live at Filmore West Cooooooooooooooold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She is wonderful

  • what a beautiful song... i soo love it...

Now this is why she is the Queen

  • THE QUEEN.

  • WOW...hitting those notes sitting down is pure talent

  • there's only one diva - effortless excellence.

  • I have to give her her props for this one, she sang the hell out of this song. One of her best in my opinion.

  • I have searching for this song for 41 years,I first heard it in Vietnam, while watching a very beautiful woman whom I grew to love and care for so very much..This song said it all..So young ,She's the best and has gotten me through many a day, with her music..

  • without any doubt, the greatest female vocalist of our time.

  • Check out Obama "Today is my day" feat.Coloria

  • [Aretha explains] "There were two people on park ave., and they were just getting ready to leave each other, going in different directions. As he got across the street and she was on the other side, he turned around and said, I love youuu!' And she said, 'I love you too!'. He said 'call me the moment you get there." ...Inspired by those two lovers' parting words on the street corner, Aretha sat down at the piano and wrote one of the most memorable songs of her career."

    -AF bio, Mark Bego.

  • Now this is a singer of all the world, no one, I mean no one will never, ever even try to come close to a goddess of song like Aretha! No disrespect to The Queen, but motherfucka you better sing!

  • Damn!!! This needs to be included in all college level voice 101 courses!

  • Aretha Franklin the greatest female vocal range......

David Ruffin the greatest male vocal range........

  • What a tune......my favourite song from Rhe....Bring that one back and start it from the top!

  • Music that feeds the Soul. Love you Rere, just spectacular!!!

  • She really makes you hate all these "McSingers" of our day. I mean, holy cow. Don't play me like you didn't try to sing along to this and sound like her... Don't even play.

  • Music that makes you want to cry... so sad how music has changed im 20 yrs old but i feel so sorry for the children now days they dont know what real music is its so sad.

  • Haunting version of a soul classic

  • OMG the chills that voice sends through you.

  • call me call me call me ...

  • Aretha doing Aretha! A writer, composer, singer, pianist with no formal training. Fast forward- today we have reality shows where contestants are put thru rigorous training & competition only to turn out not being a 10th as good as this. lol

  • They dont give her background singers enough credit - those girls were fierce!

  • that was amazing!!!

  • SHE SOUNDS GREAT

  • very romantic...

  • I just love the Vintage Aretha!

  • the sista can flat-out S A N G. thats right Sang with an (A).

  • this is electrifying

  • this is my song i swear it is

  • Aretha Franklin is just stunning. I wish there were more of these incredible artists but it seems like we've run out.

  • The industry now wants mediocre singers that are 110 pound supermodels.

  • No- the major record labels have simply stopped signing artists whose work needs several years of nurturing.

There's another Aretha out there. Not the same one or with the like style.

That singer, I suspect, will likely be found online better than on mainstream radio.

  • Aretha Franklin does a spectacular job with this song. No one else could perform a song in such a way - seated.Imagine the impact if she actually stood up and belted. I truly admire her talent. Her voice is incomparable. When she sings a song she truly makes it her own. That's a true singer.I especially like this song and most of the earlier material that she recorded. I call it "Vintage Aretha". There's none like her vocally and there probably will never be.My girl "Ree" is one of a kind.
