Ron is spot on! in the 1970s Congress removed the last fragment of the gold standard on our dollar and created the dollar index to compete with other currencies.

When the index started it was at about 160, as of the last few years the index has been around 75

So that means if you bought a stock in 1970s and held it until today, you would need to make over 110% gain just to break even in the dollars purchasing power. that's just to break even! ...the dollar is the slave as is those who use it
