I still love this model. It doesn't matter really, just as long as there is no intrusion into the cabin, the car is fine with me. There are no cars made that are indestructible.
And remember, this is for older models. In fact, if you go to IIHS's website, the injury ratings are all Good, which is remarkable because visually it doesn't look so. The only one that is Poor is the movement because the door opened.
@jaffacake1578 I'm not sure why you're bringing up the Taurus, but yes, it had good ratings except that it was hobbled with poor head restraint design up until a few years ago.
The new E-class has excellent scores, so I'm not sure how you're saying the Taurus still performs better. It's not like Fords have all had superb results--look at the older F-150 tests.
HOW CAN THIS BE!!! GERMANS ARE GODS OF CARS RIGHT?!?! LOL, guess not. But don't worry. The electrical problems will prob cause the car to quit before this happens : )
Pah, opinionated people arguing like children, just accept facts.
This model is the W210 E class from 1997, after this test was taken, within two months the front end and pillars was redesigned in order to improve safety.
This particular Mercedes is not safe, by Mercedes standards, and does NOT represent the entire brand. Stop arguing now.
These E-Class Mercedes from 1996-97 were a disgrace to Mercedes. I think by 1998 they kept the same design, but changed the structure to where it would perform much better. I think the 1998 model actually earned a good rating.
@Toni7859 I believe that merger took place in 1998, before this crash test was administered. Most of the 1996-1997 models derive from the W210 development between 1990-1994.
hey if you put w140 to this test it will perform much much worse, something like w202, in this model roof buckles and that safes some of your chest-be thankful to that. Try falling from second floor and landing on a rigid piece of concrete and then if you are still alive try to do that say with a deformable piece of anything you find and then decide the difference....
@ataskaita do some research before making bold and stupid claims ... in what way would a 2 ton luxury limo perform worse than a pocket sized c class watch this .. /watch?v=AenIm5ljNBk ..... w202 is an extremely unsafe car but the w140 is in an entirely different league .....
@ilia93 that's the thing about these tests its not the weight of the car but the performance IF it would crash into a car of the same weight and size... W140 has very similar design to w202. It's like try crashing an old 70 ton truck into a wall-it will perform poor and then crash it into a safest modern SUV - SUV will be dead...
@ataskaita the a pillars in the w140 are much stronger so it wouldn't crumple even when hitting a concrete block. the fact that the roof crumpled on the w210 doesn't make it safe ... in fact just the opposite .. the whole front end of the car is pushed in the cockpit meaning that the dashboard will be shoved in your face and the pedals will brake your legs ... crumple zones in front of the car are designed to absorb energy together with the engine not a pillars
@ataskaita so the fact that this car has a 3 star rating somehow is a good thing ... are you out of your mind ... the fact that the roof buckles only means you'll have the steering wheel shoved in your face and the pedals will brake your legs .. the whole point is that the cabin stays intact and the front of the car and the engine absorb the energy .. thats what deformation zones are for ...
this and the c-class of the same era were the only mercs i can think of that fold like this, although compared to most other cars it isnt too bad and was fixed in the facelift models, but mercs b4 and after this were extremely safe for their time, like the 80's s-class and e class and also the w201 190e was one of the safest small sedans of the 80's
its actually not a shitty german car..., its shitty american car. Mercedes was a great make until Chrysler took over.... So if u want a Mercedes out of those years do urself a favour and go buy a chrysler - same sh*t less money.
btw. I think the S class and CL class where the only models that were left untouched and sold like the original merc made them.
@palebeachbum The 850 / S70 had considerably lower injury rates, however. And I do mean *considerably*. Volvo actually built in the deformation into the car's steel safety cage. This can be seen if you remove the headliner from the car.
This was around the time frontal offset crashes were getting popular, I think.......kinda sad to know that a $52,000 + mercedes did worse in a crash than a $22,000 ford taurus.
@thegmcar keep in mind this is exactly when merc had started to adopt all of chryslers cost cutting shit oh and do ur research the only reason the LX series cars exsist is because of merc p.s. LX cars = Dodge Charger & Chrysler 300
mercedesE320fan, You talk about crumple zones... To hell with crumple zones. What I saw here was significant intrusion into the passenger compartment. A crumple zone doesn't include the passenger compartment. When it does, your dead! This Merc' E-class fails miserably when compared to many more economical vehicles.
MERCEDES auch komplette FAILURE die Scheisse MUCH IS Demaçi. Für diesen Preis Vergleich zu ihren Wettbewerbern könnte besser sein. Wo waren die selbsttätige Bremsung SENSORS vor einem möglichen Absturz. CART ist Mist. WALLIS FULL MERCEDES SHIT
much safer than this w210 actually the w210 of 97 was just one of what, thousands of benz models made, and it was fixed to quickly. its the most unsafe benz on the market. but the 98+ models are extremly safe now
I think your right, but back then they just didn't test the W123 at such a speed and it was always a full frontal, but because of the safety cage it would hold up well. I can't believe that Mercedes let this car go to market with such a poor structure.
@Metalgear55 Mercedes is one of the worst cars you can buy, I would rather drive a civic that a mercedes piece of shit. I work for a mercedes dealer and I know how bad they are it's a crime how much they are sold for.

@betrayergrandma I got a 1991 with 450k no problems just rebuilt the trans and motor and she runs like a clock. I bet my TL will last just as long its a great vehicle.
@Metalgear55 actually the merc didn't do that bad as it looks, you can find it on IIHS's official site. the only significant problam was the door opening... it's still very safe car, having in mind most other cars. and generally daimler-benz is the brand that makes one of the safest cars, along side with volvo and renault...
@harisdeva ive seen other crash tests of this model and it does very well, they were mercedes crash tests and i would trust them over the ihs. after seeing the vid here and liking this model i was thinking twice about getting one, but after seeing more than just this i realise they are safe..... look up mercedes e430 vs vw golf, it held its shape well :)
@betrayergrandma yes exactly, when compared to oher cars it's an very safe vehicle. IIHS tests are very hard to pass, just look up vehicles of other car makers and u will see what i'm talking about. the truth is that 95-97e class models didn't have the quality expected from mercedes but still it's a very good car, much bether then the comparable audi a6 for exemple. and after 97' mercedes corrected almost all of the mistakes they've made on the first models....
@harisdeva haha yeah they do rule :). if i go for a e class of this shape i will go for a post 97! in australia we have ancap with is our version of euro-ncap....... it is also based on the five star system, and i am appauled at some of the cars that aust gives 3 and 4 stars lol, alot worse than this merc. thanks 4 ur help :).
Mercedes is a classist organization. I'm not saying they haven't been innovative but they look down on the "common folk" and this lower "e class" is a testament to that.
You can also research how they've treated their e class customers. Not like true customers, but just something to make money off of.
i compltely disagree with that statement. Actually, the E-class is Mercedes' cash cow. It outsells the more expensive S-class and cheaper C-class. Mercedes arent rated the best for customer satisfaction, but they definetely value their strong E-class customer base
true, even the 01 e class had a serious corrosion problem in the front strut, the bracket rots and breaks causing the car to lay down on one side. and thats 01
they revised the design immediately after this test and the results can be found on IIHS's website. It is a benz, but it was the "blip" model, where they tried not to over-engineer their cars, but went too far the other way. This is also found in the late 90s C class, and the late 90's Audi A4.
Im driving this car and eh, i have to say that the brakes of this car are really powerfull. And in emergency cases (there were some in my life) the brakes always made me laugh at the end...
And dont forget... with 80 Km/h against a strong object like a wall... No cars made for such crashs.
not for 80km/h crashes on a rigid wall... the euro ncap tests are made at 64kmh, on deformable walls. and yes renaults get good grades in crash tests. these are the only tests they actually pass
I still love this model. It doesn't matter really, just as long as there is no intrusion into the cabin, the car is fine with me. There are no cars made that are indestructible.

Just stay away from the 95-97 models.
In 1998, improvements were made that enhanced safety.
And, this is an old car. Today, it's a challenge to find a new car that DOESN'T perform well in crash testing.

Yes, they redesigned it after this test.

The most of german cars and volvos were built for 55kmh and higher.
For a car built from 94 to 2000 this is a good result.
All these cars are not designt for NCAP Tests.
Look at other cars before 1995, a lot testet poor in the 64kmh NCAP test.
But there you can find not many testet cars of other brands than german cars.
I mean cars designt before 95.
DamnSweetThing1100 1 year ago
The car was designt for 55 kmh crash s and higher. This test was made with 64kmh and not 55kmh. In this crash, the driver protectet well.
The Brilliance was designt for 64 kmh test and failt.
The Mercedes fpr 55kmh.
Look at cars before 97 and you see, all these car were built for 55kmh crash tests.

the reason it crumples is because it has big crumple zones, plus most big heavy cars like these W210s would do this at 40mph into a concrete block.
However Woe Betide a person who was being crashed into, these W210s can take a serious beating.
it would easily crumple a fiesta or 406 etc.

IIHS tests are very hard to pass, just look up vehicles of other car makers and u will see what i'm talking about. the truth is that 95-97e class models didn't have the quality expected from mercedes but still it's a very good car, much bether then the comparable audi a6 for exemple. and after 97' mercedes corrected almost all of the mistakes they've made on the first models....
ps. benz rules!!!!!!!!!!!!

everyone watch the 00-02 w210 E-class crash test. All areas were vastly improved and the 00-02 w210 E-class did very well in the frontal crash test

Mercedes is a classist organization. I'm not saying they haven't been innovative but they look down on the "common folk" and this lower "e class" is a testament to that.
You can also research how they've treated their e class customers. Not like true customers, but just something to make money off of.
keyofdavid88 2 years ago
i compltely disagree with that statement. Actually, the E-class is Mercedes' cash cow. It outsells the more expensive S-class and cheaper C-class. Mercedes arent rated the best for customer satisfaction, but they definetely value their strong E-class customer base

If they did they wouldn't have built a generation of rustboxes, which is what the W210 was.
PeowPeowPeowLasers 2 years ago
wrong
JBsWASTELAND 2 years ago
Really. Ok, well you're clearly an expert - remind me again why most W210s are noisily rusting away. Like my own.
PeowPeowPeowLasers 2 years ago
true, even the 01 e class had a serious corrosion problem in the front strut, the bracket rots and breaks causing the car to lay down on one side. and thats 01

they revised the design immediately after this test and the results can be found on IIHS's website. It is a benz, but it was the "blip" model, where they tried not to over-engineer their cars, but went too far the other way. This is also found in the late 90s C class, and the late 90's Audi A4.

The public car which is the safest in the world is "toyota corolla".
salkjdasklds 2 years ago
From 2007, I watch this video.
The safety of the car changed in three years of 97-99 years.
As for the car of the model before it, there is no safety.
salkjdasklds 2 years ago
No, there was good safety in pre-1996 E classes. The W123 and W124 models (1976-1995) were quite safe.

Bullshit salkjdasklds , they inventet the extra hardedsteel in the drivercabin so this is a version of w120

No
toyotas2006 2 years ago
That's just the crumple zones doing there job, notice all the damage is on the front end and not much is done to the safety cage.

Im driving this car and eh, i have to say that the brakes of this car are really powerfull. And in emergency cases (there were some in my life) the brakes always made me laugh at the end...
And dont forget... with 80 Km/h against a strong object like a wall... No cars made for such crashs.
Schmatko89 3 years ago
renaults are made for crashes.
Baskentli 3 years ago
not for 80km/h crashes on a rigid wall... the euro ncap tests are made at 64kmh, on deformable walls. and yes renaults get good grades in crash tests. these are the only tests they actually pass
draken117 3 years ago
Of course, if someone buys a renault, he or she cares about safety. Really good brakes, good handling and good scores from NCAP.
For anything else, buy a japanese car:D
Baskentli 3 years ago
well if i had the choice between renault and japanese cars, i'd buy me a bike
