Some of you should try and find the book "The Dead Sea Scrolls". It reveals that one of the scrolls was signed by Jesus of the Garden of Nazerath, stating that he watched his son Jesus, his son by Mary die on the cross. That said this is my favourite musical and the 1973 version is by far the best!
I've always had a bit of sympathy for Judas. It was probably predetermined that he would betray Jesus, and do you really think any one of us could resist if the devil entered our body? (Jesus refrences this fact) I truly think that if he had not killed himself, and had devoted the rest of his life to God's service, he could have been saved. But none of us could deal with the grief of killing The Messiah either.
@puregraffiti1 ... There are records of it happening. Wether you believe the religion is up to you but there are historical records that christ was a real person, he was betrayed by judas, and he did die on the cross.
This song is the most truthful of all of songs in Jesus Christ Superstar. Judas has spent over 1,900 years in the torments of Hell with the only hope of eternal damnation in the Lake of Fire, the second death.
@35TCK That doesn't surprise me, intellectual/creative people are generally not religious. Personally, though, I like it because of the music and the costume design in this film.... the theme and the relgious beliefs of the writers are kind of irrelevant to me.
@35TCK That doesn't surprise me, intellectual/creative people are generally not religious. Personally, though, I like it because of the music and the costume design in this film.... the theme and the relgious beliefs of the writers are kind of irrelevant to me.
@osamabad It's not historic, per se. It's just a different take on the Biblical story. In that way, it is religious, but it's a sort of irreverent religion.
Well, I don't know for sure if it was historically accurate. I just meant that it goes into more detail about how Jesus's life played into the politics at the time, rather than it being about religion or morals.
it's weird that they didn't offer Judas less money because black people work for much less. and knowing Carl Anderson, he probably would've taken it and ran away.
@Astraeus216 The Israelis were much much darker than the ones now living there and that's a Historical fact! Hell just look at all their neighbors! Jews used to be black compared to these now living there!
The Church decided on scriptures to be included in the bible. There are older ones which are not such as the Book of Enoch in the old testament. The early Christian era has numerous documents which were not considered canonical such as the gospel of Judas and Mary Magdalene. The early gnostic Christian sects were wiped out in favor of what we come to know as popular Christianity.
well yes thats true but some of the old scriptures related more to the hebrews and judaism and was decided if a new religion was to be made we had to get rid of some of the old storys
i dont think it was an attempt at anything serious it just had to be done
my name sake saint samuel was cut from the new testament
No one ever wonders what the bible was really about? It was based on stories, spread orally, 90 years after they happened. then they got rewritten, rewritten, destroyed, rewritten, translated, , rewritten, translated, one pope weeded out "unholy" parts, , rewritten, rewritten, approved for a certain king, he then chose his favourtie parts to keep in the book, rewritten, translated, rewritten, translated (now we probably are around 12th century), rewritten,..
The Gospels say the truth, no manipulation, and the first has been written maybe just 20 years after Jesus's death, with many of the witnesses still alive. the Curch has decided, since the beginning, to use the oldest ones as the "good ones", simply becouse they were closer to the events than the others, and for many, many other RIGHT reasons..... too long and too difficult to explain in my poor english! :)
@Mr28091995 it's neither racist nor ironic, that's the whole point. Indeed, the black color has always symbolized the evil, but here it's very ambiguous, since Judas cannot be classified as purely negative character. Personally I like Judas, he really believed that what he's doing is good (at least as it's presented in JCS). Peter denied Jesus, but for some reason his name is not "damned for all times". It's not fair.
@longfootbuddy Without Judas' "betrayal" (something he was told to do, by Jesus, in case you missed that part), the "messiah" christians worship would never have redeemed them, eh?
Like any other character, Judas fulfilled his role in the plotline, nothing more.
@BobChaos23 actually you missed it...jesus was telling him to go do what he was going to do because jesus knew he was planning his evil.. in other words, jesus was saying "look asshole, dont pretend you love me, go and do the evil your planning"
@BobChaos23 many confused christians believe in all kinds of insane doctrines based on misinterpretations of the bible.. i have no need to defend theyr misguided beliefs.. theyr wrong about most of it
@BobChaos23 they would have found jesus eventually (probably within the week) even if Judas had not betrayed Jesus. Don't take this movie to be anything accurate to what really happened.
@kennyspillsstuff Actually, there's no proof that any of it happened. It's a bible story. There are no corroberating sources for any of it. That said, if you take it on faith, then Jesus did say he would be "betrayed" and seemed to infer that it was important.
hey guys he may be black but i tell you now he fits the character perfectly and his voice is amazing. R.I.P CARL ANDERSON YOUR A LEDGEND AND HAD A BLOODY AWESOMELY BRILLIANT VOICE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@MishNMashed I know, I really loved this man in the role of Judas. he really felt the part. An awesome actor, and an awesome singer. No one could have replaced him in this role.
@Mr28091995 ahh, i see now. now that i think of it, i suppose you're right. you, know, they could have at least included some other black characters, so the bad guy wasn't the only one.
@Mr28091995 Carl Anderson is one of the finest singers to ever grace this Earth, and Judas is portrayed in a human light rather than the villainous portrayal he has in other works. This was a case of Anderson simply being the best fit for the part, and we're all the better for it.
@mican12001 the modern references in this movie are genious they represent what judas says at the end of the movie during the song superstar, he asks jesus why he came when he did and why not in modern times when there was mass communication and he could have reached the whole world during his time on earth and not just the middle east
@TheMisticalpip The Guns and Tanks + planes were to show how much of a tech barrier there was, and why they needed a messiah like Christ to guide them. They have shovels, the Romans have machine guns. They sure as heck couldn't rebel.

When a see this musical I see the apathy to make a good music for this songs... This version of Jesus Christ Superstar is really bad.
