  • Why do people get upset about a film winning best picture and not best director. It allows the voters to "spread the wealth" between two movies they really like. If there is no difference between the two then just abolish the best director award - and give best picture to the producer AND director. John Ford was one of the finest director in history - and he holds the Oscar record as a 4 time winner of the best director oscar. However, only one of his films won the best picture oscar !!!

  • CHICAGO IS SOO AMAZING

  • I hated Chicago, I couldant believed it even got nominated

  • chicago is a great movie

  • Pretty good movie, but The Pianist is waaaaaaaay better.

  • funny how everyone knew The Two Towers wasn't going to win

  • I LUV CHICAGO

  • It's funny that they panned over to Hilary and her husband when Marty couldn't remember who to thank because Hilary forgot to thank her husband when she won her first Oscar for Boys Don't Cry.

  • And all that jazz!!

  • I can't believe Michael Douglas's dad is still alive

  • @renfieldvonklauss im pretty sure that the 8 oscars cabaret won were not all over the godfather, such as best actress and cinematography. i guess the academy wanted to honor both films by giving the directing oscar to cabaret but since there was no way they could choose cabaret as the best picture over the godfather, the right film won

  • people are saying chicago is not serious, but there is alot of serious stuff in there. corruption, and crimes of passion are the recurring themes in this beautiful and amazing and perfect film. but i do love a good holocaust film, like the pianist and the LOTR: two towers is amazing.

  • how the can the pianist win best screenplay, actor and director but not best picture??????? chicago had no excuse to win

  • @vadimzdonutube The moment Kirk and Michael Douglas came to present the Oscar, I was like,"Chicago has won, hasn't it?" Catherine Zeta-Jones won for Best Supporting Actress earlier on, so to have her father-in-law AND husband present Best Pic only meant that CZJ's film had won Best Pic...

  • @88narayandivya so what harrison ford presented best picture in 1999 and it went to shakespeare in love instead of saving private ryan

  • @vadimzdonutube I think that "Best Picture" is based on more "well-roundedness", or sometimes, the most nominations. Chicago also has a screenplay nod, but it has 4 ACTING NOMS, compared to The Pianist's single acting nod.. and Chicago also had a best director nod as well as a whole bunch of other crap for nods.

  • @drxwnedxwxrld yeah but it think its nonsense that a film wins best picture but not for directing or screenplay, which confuses me why gladiator won

  • @vadimzdonutube Or sometimes it's the effect of the "Weistein Oscar Campaigning" hahaha

  • WOW! what a strong category. ive seen all of these films (apart from gangs of new york so i cant speak for that) and to be honest i would have been pleased if any of them had won. the hours and the pianist are both tear-jerking dramas, the tow towers is the epic blockbuster with amazing effects and chicago is probably the most entertaining of them all in my opinion. i think over all chicago deserved it but its a really difficult choice.

  • clever movie.

  • Tough tight choices that year. It's so hard to choose.

  • Can you guys please post the video of roman polanski winning the award? i know he wasnt there, but still

  • Minority Report should have at least been nominated.

  • CHICAGO ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Harvey Weinstein is an executive producer for Chicago, The Lord of the Rings and Gangs of New York. He rules!!

  • @lilianhide his oscar compaign for shakespeare in love created the biggest travesty in oscar history: that film beat saving private ryan for best picture wtf?????

  • @vadimzdonutube and life is beautiful. which was an amazing and horribly sad movie. they both were.

  • Chicago is the best musical ever Done. Ever Ever!!!

  • Chicago is the best musical ever!!! and the movie is just much better than the musical!!!

  • Chicago is good, but in my opinion The pianist was better !!

  • I thought Chicago was a excellent film for sure, but the pianist was a artistic masterpeice, with some of the finest direction and acting. my opinion is pianist should have won.

  • Ok, for me, The Lord of the Rings: the two towers should have won, but i'm suspect to say because i'm addicted to this trilogy

  • lord of the rings II should have won, but mostly Attack of the Clones should have been nominated and won for Best Pictue! it was really good and deserved that award.

  • The best musical ever!! xD

  • Well, lots of people say it's one of the worst Best Picture winners ever. I, personally liked Chicago. It was fun to watch. And a very good movie. The Pianist was good too. But most of those who rank Best Picture winners are male, and men usually don't like musicals. I'm a guy too (16) and I liked it. But who am I too judge? Both were great films!

  • @thatsnotmyname90210 I'm a man, and I'm hetero and I love musicals.

  • @thatsnotmyname90210 I agree, it was a fun film, but for it to win, I don't know what was going on, I guess the Oscars wanted to make the mother of all surprises that year.

Personally, I thought "Around the World in 80 Days" was the worst Best PIcture Winner.

  • Love Chicago--the music is fantastic! : )

And to think that, since Chicago, a musical hasn't won Best Picture.

  • The Pianist was robbed!

  • Lamest music ever!

  • why do they always say 'producers' i mean we know what category is this

  • Maybe Chicago wasn't the best movie that year - but it was certainly the most unique film - the other contenders were a big epic fantasy, a holocaust piece, and a historical crime drama.

Chicago, on the other hand, was a very biting satire of show business, the justice system, the media, and public morality. You don't see many movies like that. It's kinda Brechtian.

So it might not've deserved the win, but I think it gets a lot of undue scorn.

  • I lol'd when he told michael to speak distinctly

  • Chicago deserved the win. My personal favorite films were The Hours and The Pianist, but I understand why Chicago won. First, it is an amazing black comedy/musical, secondly the performances were fantastic and it is a project that couldn't have been filmed for decades. And it has endless re-watch value. This was one of the toughest years of the 2000s.

  • @JohnTripinTokyo +1 on re-watch value

  • Oh but the ending! The ending that ruined such a nice concept! It was so cheesy and stupid. The ending cannot be forgiven.

  • This is the last year that the movies nominated were actually REALLY good. I saw all of them and I thought Chicago was the best but it was against some really hard hitters

  • The Hours was fantastic ,and Philosophic ... And Chicago was also Fantastic

  • Que grandes los dos!!!!!!

  • totally agree....the pianist should have won,,,,,

  • 1. Chicago

    2. The Hours

    3. The Pianist

    4. Gangs of New York

    5. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

  • @andrewdisney1 No I SO disagree with you, TTT all the way for me, baby!!

  • I Love Kirk Douglas "This Is My Son Michael He Has 2 Awards! While I'm Still Young!" Age 94...Amazing!

  • The Pianist was robbed, its just completely ridiculous how it did not win. It was a movie with a message of such massive importance with a brilliant performance by Brody and outstanding directing by Polanski, in my mind it beats chicago by a mile

  • @nWo315

    no, no is true

  • @nWo315

no, no is true chicago is the best

  • @nWo315 chicago is the best

  • The Pianist > Chicago

  • a very very very smart film!

  • I remember watching this and Chicago winning all these Oscars. Then Dustin Hoffman introduced The Pianist, then showed a clip.

Hoffmans words about the film were so intense, so striking, that when the cameras cut to people in the crowd, you could see in their eyes the regret for not voting The Pianist Best Picture.

Chicago was entertaining, but The Pianist is a film people still talk about, that has still stuck with audiences, for almost a decade now. THAT'S best picture quality.

  • @rattrap3 I still talk about Chicago.... : )

  • I'm shocked that Chicago won....

  • I turned off the TV when I saw Chicago winning, I wanted Two Towers to win, I'm sorry Lord of the Rings deserved every best picture award for each film.

  • @Hyman74Roth Then, the next year, Return of the King made Academy Award history by winning 11 awards. Chicago is the last of the great musical movies. Rob Marshall is one of the best directors of our time, and has he gotten an award yet?! No. The actors were amazing, and they all dominated their parts. This movie has been argued to be better than the stage show.

  • Pianist!!!

  • this movie is amazing. I love it.

  • The Pianist, Two Towers Gangs of New york > Chicago

Daniel Day Lewis > Adrien Brody

  • all the films in this category are awesome but im so glad Chicago won, well deserved.

  • but what happened then after something like that NINE, well Daniel Day worth it.

  • Lord of the Rings was so much better...

  • The Pianist should have won. Well at least Roman Polanski got his Oscar®.

  • oh yea Chicago! One of my favourite movies and musicals ever! I don't see why people dont' think this deserves to win. The first time I watched Chicago was on DVD and it blew me away the very first time i watched it, and the next day I put in the DVD again because it's that good! It's really one of those really flawless films you want to watch over and over again. Why does a Best Picture need to be a sombre film to win? Chicago is extremely well made.

  • Oh I bet this was so difficult - They're all absolutely great!!!! Gangs of NY is an amazing picture... not to mention The Two Towers... but Chicago is a great movie as well.

  • GoNY got snubbed all night long

rather weak year for Best Picture I would say

  • Chicago is a wonderful movie.

    ...

However, The Pianist was the Best Picture of the Year.

    Sorry. :\

  • i love you michael x

  • And ... Queen latifah!!!!1

  • And .... QUEEN LATIFAH!!!

  • And ... QUEEN LATIFAH !!!!

  • And ... QUEEN LATIFAH !!!!

  • ha har hilary is funny

  • ha har hilary is funny

  • Chicago is such an energetic, and amazing film. So deserved the Oscar.

  • Chicago pales next Lord of the Rings: Two Towers. However, it was the next best in the category. The Pianist was overrated (and Polanski's worst Oscar effort). The Hours was a bit heavyhanded (better peformance film than production). Gangs of NY was not Scorsese at his best (but close). Chicago was the best. THough Far From Heaven should've been included.

  • @wolfben22 Chicago is overrated,dumb musical

  • Chicago best picture???

    BIG JOKE !!!

  • That was a very good year for hollywood, many good movies but i think The pianist was the one who should have one that year.

  • not that i'm complaining because i love chicago but i am so suprised that it beat gangs of new york, the hours, lord of the rings AND the pianist. i would have thought it would be the last movie in the list to win since the awards always seem to go to "serious" films. i'd like to see a comedy win one of these days

  • Gangs Of New York should have won!

  • at the moment there was a great hype about chicago, but looking back in retrospect.....it was a bad idea, the pianist shuld have won

  • great movies that year and so different too.

I loved Chicago, the hours and the pianist made me cried so much...

and the two towers was a great sequel.

When i think about the hours i think about julianne moore too,she didn't win and she's a great actress. In the hours there were 3 gods acting for me

  • To artsylovelylady: Samantha Geimer spent here whole life moving on from this terrible incident. She has stated several time to the media that she wants the case dismissed (forgiven Polanski), and has no intention of going back there and reliving it. However corrupt judges and DA's (greedy for limelight recognition), are the ones who want to advance their careers by prosecuting Polanski

  • I cringe every time I hear "Roman Polanski." That guy should be in jail.

  • @artsylovelylady what did he do ?

  • Chicago is great movie, but The Pianist should have won

  • why

  • @MlodyGoblin i hope the academy burns in hell, the pianist was a peice of art that wass one of the greatest

  • lol hilary swank!!! i love her!!!

  • Hilary Swank and Sissy Spacek at 4:43.

  • BEST MOVIE EVER !

  • i LOVED chicago!!!!

  • who was that tghat screemed queen latifah

  • this is my own opinion. chicago was thought to be virtually un-filmable for decades. then with the ingenious concept of placing the musical numbers in a fantasy world inside roxie's head, this stage piece became a film. unlike all of the musicals that have won best picture especially my fair lady, chicago transformed in a film, a cinematic experience. that's why it was nominated and it's why it deserved to win.

  • @perfectajo thanks a lot, I've been pondering why it should've won.

  • @perfectajo don't forget the amazing lighting artists

  • @perfectajo I have to tell you somenthing:

in my opinion your comment is THE BEST COMMENT EVER!!!!!

    WOW!!!

you explain in the best words possible, why chicago deserved to win!!!!!

    THANK YOU!!!

  • im so glad it won an oscar

  • i love kirk douglas, he's so charismatic even with the speech impediment from this stroke...i love when he deliberately says 'and the winner is'

  • I think it should have gone to either Gangs of New York or The Pianist.

  • Chicago is BORING¡¡.

It's the worst movie than won an Oscar in this decade.

'The Pianist' and 'The Hours' are SO MUCH BETTER¡¡

  • I think "Adaptation." should´ve been nominated for Best Picture and Director.

"Chicago" is great, my favorite musical but "The Pianist" is far better

  • LOL. Kirk Douglas is so funny. I love it.

  • "Excellent" ! :)

  • OMG!!!I can't believe Chicago won this award...I mean,ok it was a good movie,a really good musical, but it didn't deserve this award....Having seen and the rest 4 movies, this one would be the last to give the Oscar..I think i would give it to the 'Pianist' .....

  • I absolutely agree wiht you

  • gangs of new york was totaly robbed, 10 nominatins, 0 wins, i guess the academy didnt see it this year or this year, benjamin button all they way

  • Yeah! Chicago!

I'm still pissed off that Moulin Rouge! was fail the year before, but hey, Chicago is fine!

  • I am thrilled that movie musicals are back in style thanks to Chicago!

I wonder if Bob Fosse is looking down now and smiling, and probably coming up with new dance moves in Heaven!

  • hey.. i love it... bravo chicago!!!! love roxie and velma :))

  • I completely understand why he ripped it.

  • I hear you. Lord of the Rings FTW!

  • You mean "WTF".

  • it is one of the reasons for the preferential voting system this year.

  • This was wrong on so many levels!

  • of course chicago is amazing movie

  • Pianist and LotR: TTT much more deserving

  • NO Just NO... those are extremely depressive films!!!

  • seriously....wtf....chicago?!?!?!?! GoNY,TP,LotR MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH more deserving

  • okay...chicago was good but it did not deserve tp win

  • chicago could have beaten the pianist, but nor in 1000 years, rob marshall would have beaten roman polanski

  • Kirk Douglas really an actor....He pretended to be an old man....His mind was still crystal clear!!!!

  • kirk and michael are so sweet together!!!!!

  • OMG. The great auteurs were turning in their graves when they learned of this. A fucking musical? I saw this film, it's nothing special. LOTR got robbed of the Oscar :/ I understand where many of you "Chicago" Fanboys and Fangirls are coming from but honestly you're full of shit.

  • I can honestly say LOTR was the worst film I have seen in my life!

  • fuck you

  • Really, LOTR is a FANTASY movie, it has no great acting, no great costmes, and is mostly two guys climbing a mountain, now Chicago, has an actual really creative story, it is beautiful to watch, has a lot of great actors, not only serious parts but also funny parts, so it's all types of movies in one, that's why it won!

  • I haven't seen The Hours and Gangs of New York, but I've seen The Two Towers, The Pianist and Chicago, and I think that all three were equally deserving of the Oscar, so I wasn't upset that Chicago won.

  • Chicago is a great movie but I hold The Pianist and The Hours in higher regard. They tell meaningful stories whereas Chicago only delivers good entertainment. Maybe after Schindler's List and Life is Beautiful many academy members didn't want to give the Oscar to another Holocaust movie. The Hours covered 'difficult' topics such as suicide and same sex love. Another problem: actors are overrepresented in the academy (1222 actors vs. 462 producers, 388 writers, 375 directors etc)

  • Well, I think you're looking at the movies in terms of message, meaning and story and while the movies you mentioned seem to mean more as cultural pieces the award for Best Picture goes to the movie that had the highest achievement in film making which then ties in sound and cinematography and score and acting and all the technical aspects of the film. Chicago was the best at combining these things but also had a filming concept that successfully translated an "un-filmable" musical into a hit

  • Very well said.

Basically, you took the words right out of my mouth, Eyesiq.

  • Life is Beautiful, my favourite movie, just wanted to respond to this comment as I haven't seen it in ages

  • lotr was great, amazing even but as a film it was a sequal so wasnt concluded hence why i believe the return of the king won.

chicago was the best made musical for many years, thats why i believe it won and it was a great film

  • Wow. I didn't know Chicago beat LOTR and the Pianist. They were all such great movies. There were so many great movies that year!! How on earth did they choose? But I don't agree that other movies should have won because I think Chicago was a great movie, and it was a close close race and everyone deserved it.

  • Shoulda been LotR

  • The Pianist should have owned this award...

  • Oops... won.:)

  • The Pianist should have one.

  • pfft, gangs of new york should've won.

  • I havent seen Chicago yet but this is still a great moment

  • one of my favorite oscar moments

  • Did Micheal win the oscar twice? I know that he won it 4 Wall Street, but what else?

  • One flew over the Cuckcoo's nest which won best picture.

  • he won as producer for One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest

  • the hours should have won

  • 2:37 - 2:39 amuses considering the mr cellophane number he played. The man rushed right by him. Even irl the poor guy gets no attention. *sigh*

  • LMFAO its true!!!!

  • Catherine Zeta Jones also snubbed him when she won.

  • Amazing moment in time.

  • The Oscar award is not for the best and longest movie。 It is for the movie which is perfectly made。

  • I love it when Kirk says "to be 75 again".

The intro is one of my favourites.

  • lol

at first when i haven't seen Chicago

i thought the Pianist would win

    and when Chicago won

I thought, "An undeserved winner presented by the lesser of the Douglasses", until i saw it and i thought wow, this a great musical

of course pianist is better but seeing how Roman polanskis status could effect anything im just as happy that Chicago won.

  • @MarvelDCComicsHero You are aware he won best director that year, right?

  • Gangs of New York should have one.

  • I like it when Kirk Douglas rips the paper in half

  • Can you say Oh my God, again?

  • Chicago was a good one but when i first watched this i really wanted The Pianist to win

  • Chicago is awesome.

  • Comment removed

  • I love how when they start anouncing the nominations Mr. Richards is just sitting there like he dosen't expect to win and when they say Chicago he's like," Oh my god, you're kidding." I love the expression on his face. So priceless.

    CHICAGO RULES!!!

    Peace.

  • you're crazy, CHICAGO RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yeah I love Chicago!

  • What did Hilary Swank shouted?

  • The Pianist was robbed!!!

  • Is Kurt Douglas still with us? That was so couragous for him to make that presentation. Still, presenting himself as a man with real class!

  • Yah, he;s still alive.

  • Awesome that it won! It was one of the greatest movies of the year, well the greatest of course!

Did he forgot to mention the one and only Christine Baranski?
