Why do people get upset about a film winning best picture and not best director. It allows the voters to "spread the wealth" between two movies they really like. If there is no difference between the two then just abolish the best director award - and give best picture to the producer AND director. John Ford was one of the finest director in history - and he holds the Oscar record as a 4 time winner of the best director oscar. However, only one of his films won the best picture oscar !!!
It's funny that they panned over to Hilary and her husband when Marty couldn't remember who to thank because Hilary forgot to thank her husband when she won her first Oscar for Boys Don't Cry.
@renfieldvonklauss im pretty sure that the 8 oscars cabaret won were not all over the godfather, such as best actress and cinematography. i guess the academy wanted to honor both films by giving the directing oscar to cabaret but since there was no way they could choose cabaret as the best picture over the godfather, the right film won
people are saying chicago is not serious, but there is alot of serious stuff in there. corruption, and crimes of passion are the recurring themes in this beautiful and amazing and perfect film. but i do love a good holocaust film, like the pianist and the LOTR: two towers is amazing.
@vadimzdonutube The moment Kirk and Michael Douglas came to present the Oscar, I was like,"Chicago has won, hasn't it?" Catherine Zeta-Jones won for Best Supporting Actress earlier on, so to have her father-in-law AND husband present Best Pic only meant that CZJ's film had won Best Pic...
@vadimzdonutube I think that "Best Picture" is based on more "well-roundedness", or sometimes, the most nominations. Chicago also has a screenplay nod, but it has 4 ACTING NOMS, compared to The Pianist's single acting nod.. and Chicago also had a best director nod as well as a whole bunch of other crap for nods.
WOW! what a strong category. ive seen all of these films (apart from gangs of new york so i cant speak for that) and to be honest i would have been pleased if any of them had won. the hours and the pianist are both tear-jerking dramas, the tow towers is the epic blockbuster with amazing effects and chicago is probably the most entertaining of them all in my opinion. i think over all chicago deserved it but its a really difficult choice.
@lilianhide his oscar compaign for shakespeare in love created the biggest travesty in oscar history: that film beat saving private ryan for best picture wtf?????
I thought Chicago was a excellent film for sure, but the pianist was a artistic masterpeice, with some of the finest direction and acting. my opinion is pianist should have won.
lord of the rings II should have won, but mostly Attack of the Clones should have been nominated and won for Best Pictue! it was really good and deserved that award.
Well, lots of people say it's one of the worst Best Picture winners ever. I, personally liked Chicago. It was fun to watch. And a very good movie. The Pianist was good too. But most of those who rank Best Picture winners are male, and men usually don't like musicals. I'm a guy too (16) and I liked it. But who am I too judge? Both were great films!
@thatsnotmyname90210 I agree, it was a fun film, but for it to win, I don't know what was going on, I guess the Oscars wanted to make the mother of all surprises that year.
Personally, I thought "Around the World in 80 Days" was the worst Best PIcture Winner.
Maybe Chicago wasn't the best movie that year - but it was certainly the most unique film - the other contenders were a big epic fantasy, a holocaust piece, and a historical crime drama.
Chicago, on the other hand, was a very biting satire of show business, the justice system, the media, and public morality. You don't see many movies like that. It's kinda Brechtian.
So it might not've deserved the win, but I think it gets a lot of undue scorn.
Chicago deserved the win. My personal favorite films were The Hours and The Pianist, but I understand why Chicago won. First, it is an amazing black comedy/musical, secondly the performances were fantastic and it is a project that couldn't have been filmed for decades. And it has endless re-watch value. This was one of the toughest years of the 2000s.
This is the last year that the movies nominated were actually REALLY good. I saw all of them and I thought Chicago was the best but it was against some really hard hitters
The Pianist was robbed, its just completely ridiculous how it did not win. It was a movie with a message of such massive importance with a brilliant performance by Brody and outstanding directing by Polanski, in my mind it beats chicago by a mile
I remember watching this and Chicago winning all these Oscars. Then Dustin Hoffman introduced The Pianist, then showed a clip.
Hoffmans words about the film were so intense, so striking, that when the cameras cut to people in the crowd, you could see in their eyes the regret for not voting The Pianist Best Picture.
Chicago was entertaining, but The Pianist is a film people still talk about, that has still stuck with audiences, for almost a decade now. THAT'S best picture quality.
I turned off the TV when I saw Chicago winning, I wanted Two Towers to win, I'm sorry Lord of the Rings deserved every best picture award for each film.
@Hyman74Roth Then, the next year, Return of the King made Academy Award history by winning 11 awards. Chicago is the last of the great musical movies. Rob Marshall is one of the best directors of our time, and has he gotten an award yet?! No. The actors were amazing, and they all dominated their parts. This movie has been argued to be better than the stage show.
oh yea Chicago! One of my favourite movies and musicals ever! I don't see why people dont' think this deserves to win. The first time I watched Chicago was on DVD and it blew me away the very first time i watched it, and the next day I put in the DVD again because it's that good! It's really one of those really flawless films you want to watch over and over again. Why does a Best Picture need to be a sombre film to win? Chicago is extremely well made.
Oh I bet this was so difficult - They're all absolutely great!!!! Gangs of NY is an amazing picture... not to mention The Two Towers... but Chicago is a great movie as well.
Chicago pales next Lord of the Rings: Two Towers. However, it was the next best in the category. The Pianist was overrated (and Polanski's worst Oscar effort). The Hours was a bit heavyhanded (better peformance film than production). Gangs of NY was not Scorsese at his best (but close). Chicago was the best. THough Far From Heaven should've been included.

not that i'm complaining because i love chicago but i am so suprised that it beat gangs of new york, the hours, lord of the rings AND the pianist. i would have thought it would be the last movie in the list to win since the awards always seem to go to "serious" films. i'd like to see a comedy win one of these days
To artsylovelylady: Samantha Geimer spent here whole life moving on from this terrible incident. She has stated several time to the media that she wants the case dismissed (forgiven Polanski), and has no intention of going back there and reliving it. However corrupt judges and DA's (greedy for limelight recognition), are the ones who want to advance their careers by prosecuting Polanski
this is my own opinion. chicago was thought to be virtually un-filmable for decades. then with the ingenious concept of placing the musical numbers in a fantasy world inside roxie's head, this stage piece became a film. unlike all of the musicals that have won best picture especially my fair lady, chicago transformed in a film, a cinematic experience. that's why it was nominated and it's why it deserved to win.
OMG!!!I can't believe Chicago won this award...I mean,ok it was a good movie,a really good musical, but it didn't deserve this award....Having seen and the rest 4 movies, this one would be the last to give the Oscar..I think i would give it to the 'Pianist' .....

Really, LOTR is a FANTASY movie, it has no great acting, no great costmes, and is mostly two guys climbing a mountain, now Chicago, has an actual really creative story, it is beautiful to watch, has a lot of great actors, not only serious parts but also funny parts, so it's all types of movies in one, that's why it won!
I haven't seen The Hours and Gangs of New York, but I've seen The Two Towers, The Pianist and Chicago, and I think that all three were equally deserving of the Oscar, so I wasn't upset that Chicago won.
Chicago is a great movie but I hold The Pianist and The Hours in higher regard. They tell meaningful stories whereas Chicago only delivers good entertainment. Maybe after Schindler's List and Life is Beautiful many academy members didn't want to give the Oscar to another Holocaust movie. The Hours covered 'difficult' topics such as suicide and same sex love. Another problem: actors are overrepresented in the academy (1222 actors vs. 462 producers, 388 writers, 375 directors etc)
Well, I think you're looking at the movies in terms of message, meaning and story and while the movies you mentioned seem to mean more as cultural pieces the award for Best Picture goes to the movie that had the highest achievement in film making which then ties in sound and cinematography and score and acting and all the technical aspects of the film. Chicago was the best at combining these things but also had a filming concept that successfully translated an "un-filmable" musical into a hit
Wow. I didn't know Chicago beat LOTR and the Pianist. They were all such great movies. There were so many great movies that year!! How on earth did they choose? But I don't agree that other movies should have won because I think Chicago was a great movie, and it was a close close race and everyone deserved it.
I love how when they start anouncing the nominations Mr. Richards is just sitting there like he dosen't expect to win and when they say Chicago he's like," Oh my god, you're kidding." I love the expression on his face. So priceless.
Why do people get upset about a film winning best picture and not best director. It allows the voters to "spread the wealth" between two movies they really like.

Very well said.
Basically, you took the words right out of my mouth, Eyesiq.

lotr was great, amazing even but as a film it was a sequal so wasnt concluded hence why i believe the return of the king won.

Wow. I didn't know Chicago beat LOTR and the Pianist. They were all such great movies. There were so many great movies that year!! How on earth did they choose? But I don't agree that other movies should have won because I think Chicago was a great movie, and it was a close close race and everyone deserved it.

The Oscar award is not for the best and longest movie。 It is for the movie which is perfectly made。

I love it when Kirk says "to be 75 again".
The intro is one of my favourites.

at first when i haven't seen Chicago
i thought the Pianist would win
and when Chicago won
I thought, "An undeserved winner presented by the lesser of the Douglasses", until i saw it and i thought wow, this a great musical
of course pianist is better but seeing how Roman polanskis status could effect anything im just as happy that Chicago won.

I love how when they start anouncing the nominations Mr. Richards is just sitting there like he dosen't expect to win and when they say Chicago he's like," Oh my god, you're kidding." I love the expression on his face. So priceless.
