No, i disagree. He is probably the best chord improviser ever. And when he does that thing where he plays a couple of chords clean and then busts out a couple of fast licks and switches back to clean, thats breathtaking. But i feel like when he starts playing really fast, you can feel him hesitating. We all know hes a perfectionist, and you can sense him holding back and judging instead of just really letting loose like hendrix or satch or vai.

I think what Satch and Vai tend to improvise is easier than what EJ tries to improv. They use more legato and stock sweeps/tapping (esp. vai) that they've practiced a billion times - EJ goes for more weird pentatonic/speed pick runs when improvising electric runs, which are more difficult to make sound good let alone clean.

For all those who are experts on the subject, I have some questions for you. I have recently been introduced to this man because of guitar hero. I have always known about slash. So my question is who is better? What makes a great guitar player? Are these the questions I even need to ask? What are the questions I need to ask? Please enlighten me. EJ and Slash play different types of music, so it would be unfair to make a comparison. BUt IMO, a great guitarist is one who plays cleanly w/ even tempo. He also plays such that the overall sound of the band is great. He is creative and open-minded to music. And most of all, he's expressive and enjoys what he's doing. :D

well, Iron Maiden created the fundamentals of Heavy Metal, but none of them is a genius, and Dragonforce can't play live what they do in studio. And most of all,being a good guitarist does not mean play fast. Skill and speed are only tools. You need taste, knowledge and expression, which are the primary focuses of Eric johnson, for example. Slash plays in a band, so he's different from a soloist, but i'd say that Johnson is far better. Man, he's far better than almost everyone :)
