I'll agree with you on the fact that the latest Alk3 album was a disappointment. I really like both bands, although neither one is my favorite. I've never seen HWM live, so I can't speak for that (even though I live near Gainesville), but Alk3 is great live. But I think Alk3's morbid lyrics are truly intellectual. It's not like they're a generic metal band spewing attention-getting filth, they're actually dark.

Well Alkaline Trio is a punk band that started in the late 90s. If you want some of their best stuff, listen to 'Goddammit'. Hot Water Music is also a hardcore band that has a lot of it's own music which is really awesome too. Personally, I like Alkaline Trio better but it's really an opinion.
