  • "I've realized that you are not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment. But you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus." --Agent Smith, from "The Matrix"

  • There are some videos out there that everyone should be forced to watch before using the internet. This is one of them.

  • I wish this series was among the most viewed videos on Youtube.

  • Population growth will become a problem if it isn't one already. This guys a genius, I thoroughly enjoyed this series of vids. Oh, and some of the comments here are retarded. I hate you to all I disagree with. lol

  • Im actually surprised that i managed to watch all 8 parts, very interesting indeed, its amazing how much the human race has devistated this world in such a short time, maybe the cure is coming this year as predicted?

Like a Virus, the human race is spreading, consuming and devistating, mother nature needs to find a cure asap.

  • this guy should be president

  • Question: What's wrong with these three statements?

The country is in economic distress because of the irrational action of crowds.

The fluctuating price of pre-civil war cotton was the result of the poor working habits of slaves.

The emerging decline of available non-renewable resources can only be fixed by mandating zero population growth.

    Answer: They are all fallacious.

  • I hate it when people say "we should set an example and reduce our own population".

All that will happen is that the space and resources freed by our own population reduction is only going to be used by other populations coming here from places that haven't reduced their population.

It's like saying we should make our own culture and race extinct so that a different one can come and take its place, just so that they can continue to do the very thing we were supposed to be trying to stop

  • @wootlanter This is the kind of nationalistic propaganda the world has dumped on its-self, we are all human beings! Why don't we as a species believe all human beings have the right to live comfortably? Another emerging culture to replace yours? WTF, countries in Europe have lasted thousands of years on a very small growth rate with less real estate compared to America. The solution lies in our species being selfless to help the world as whole. It's sad that there are places that

  • @wootlanter...haven't even experienced the modern world of the USA. They still live in a world where illiteracy is common, and education is sparse. The US is the leader on this issue cuz we consume the most. We started the oil boom and now its ending. We need innovation, not hostility. I don't care who solves the problem, Germany, Ireland, China, UK, Sweden, etc. He/She will be a fellow person and I will be proud of my species on that day.

  • @thegodd02 OH MY GOD. you have no idea the kind of world we live in. wootlanter is someone who actually wants to be realistic. The people of the world DO NOT just come together for the greater good, hold hands and sing kum bai yah until the problems gone. As the VERY SIMPLE ARITHMETIC shows you,NO AMOUNT OF SELFLESSNESS and human ingenuity will stop an impending implosion of the global population. But if you want to hug your trees then be my guest. Set an example and throw yourself on the alter

  • Absolutely FANTASTIC series. The man is a genius. Its a shame that the current government doesnt employ him or have him as an advisor. What he is saying is what I have been saying to my family and friends for years. How can we continue to grow, as a species when we have 7 BILLION people on this planet. I hate to say it but world depopulation is probably where we are currently heading, especially with Iran,Israel, economic collapse, etc. Scary times are ahead, and I for one CAN see them....

  • i like this vid a lot but he doesnt factor in many other variables, for example growing education and emancipation of woman is leading to a decline in birth rates, education is the answer.

  • people always cite war as some means of population control. this is false. the first and second world wars did not even represent a blip in world population trends so stfu

  • War over food and land might be the final ultimate solution here. But we shouldn't stand for politicians and other people in power deciding who lives and who dies on this earth.

  • This man should have been president.of the world= like we ever "elected" anyone with a vote. USA

  • And 3) starvation of large populations (likely). Pressed "send" by accident. Incidentally, when the bible told man to go forth and multiply, that was 2000 years ago. Kindly not forget it was written... TWO THOUSAND YEARS AGO.

  • It's very simple really. Population will grow to a limit. That limit will be when any of the following start to control it: 1) war/murder over scare resources (very likely), 2) mortal disease spreading more rapidly than medical science can slow (likely)

  • Everyone who is born should get 1 coupon. The coupon is redeemed upon having a child. When you die, your child is given the coupon. The cycle continues. Also, if your child dies before you do, you get your coupon back.

  • @Kiwibird Good idea but I dont think they should have to wait for the parent to die. What happens with the people who choose not to have children, do we chalk that up to population reduction? how do we enforce justice on people who sneakily have another?

Also I personally think parenthood should come with responsibilities, if you are a parent you have to work and not be a leech on society expecting benefits, regardless of how much your spouse earns, if you have a spouse.

  • Now I see why the nwo wants to kill off so many.

  • arithmetic u scary

  • @plutoend99 a jihad on math will surely solve this problem

  • I'd like to buy the DVD with this lecture, but I'm from outside of US. Can anyone tell me where can I get it?

  • his math is correct. His conclusions from the math are fallible.

  • no bloopers?

  • 7% will double in between 11 and 12 year !!! But 90% it's ok :)

  • To the make the problem far worse is the dysgenic nature of the modern world, especially in the 1st world. The welfare state and several other modern social phenomena has fostered a negative correlation between IQ and fertility, an unprecedented state of affairs in the traditionally natural selection governed world. Not only is our population growing unsustainably but this growth is the growth of less cognitively able people. I mean no offense to anyone but its the other major problem.

  • @TheAsianEngineer That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. People that are less well off have been having more kids than those that are well off for the last couple hundred years, but the IQ has increased, technologies have improved, society has gotten more stable, etc. You are clearly incorrect.

  • @alexfishieable What you allude to is the flynn effect and it is caused by the significantly improved living standards (particularly nutrition) in the 1st world. It will, however, eventually peak and, in fact, it is already masking a decline in genotypic IQ.

  • war is inevitable unfortunately

  • "...Please don't take what I say blindly or non-critically, because of rhetoric or for any other reason. Please check the facts. Please check my arithmetic. If you find errors please let me know, but if you don't find errors, then I hope you take this very very seriously: You are important people you can think and if there was ever a time when the human race needs people who will think it's right now. It's our responsibility as citizens in a democracy to think..."

  • at first i thought you may have over shot with the title but you were right on. thanx for posting.

  • "Well the bible tells me to go forth an multiply....so dats what i'm gonna do." Another example of how religion poisons EVERYTHING!!

  • so how would he stop population growth.... forced sterilization? get real the problems will come in the future but we should let nature pull the plug, not become murderers

  • So.....make war, not love?

  • Thnx for sharing this Video, Thnx Dr Albert A. Bartlett.

  • Very enlightening and answers a few questions i'd been pondering. I can only hope everyone else takes the time to watch the WHOLE of this seminar; some important stuff here folks.

  • Ashton Kutcher was in that class! Did you notice?

  • so it was 1 hour and 20 mins of this guy telling us how fucked we all are

  • with more people we can think of more solutions thats the only thing that will get better, the thing is they kept us stupid:D

  • anyone pick up on the end of video 7, beginning of video 8 he mentions global warming but does not elaborate further, yet he states that global warming is a much greater threat than population.

hmmmm teleprompter must have skipped his lines, or maybe there was no evidence to elaborate on, maybe he was just planting a seed, hmmmm he did tell us to think for ourselves

fact: all the other planets are heating up too, and where does our heat come from?

whats the sun doing these days, ask john moore!

  • When people are not over-anxious about their survival, they reproduce less. For instance, white college-educated people often have fewer than two children per family, are not replacing themselves. Uneducated, at-risk populations on the other hand, reproduce like crazy! In Europe, I've heard 12 or 16 children per family of Muslims, and in America, 2.11 children per family of Latinos. So, based on that, a society that's secure and confident of its survival would probably solve overpopulation.

  • We're all fucked. Period.

  • He's certainly a compelling speaker.

  • As a student, I am absolutely befuddled by the implications this has on the present and future of our human race. Consumption WILL decrease... it's guaranteed. People will die. The growth rate of population will invert. The good news is, at some point this will level off... the bad news is that the living situation will likely be pretty terrible when it does.

  • Thank you Mr Barlett, you have opened my eyes and enlightened me, I am simply lost to find a solution. Lets hope we arnt too late to make the change. I am going to make it a priority in my life. Thank you for sharing...

  • - and thanks for sharing, he is a brilliant speaker.

  • Ethical mathematics supports the argument that gay marriage should be made legal on a federal level - NOW!!!

  • I only clicked on this video because the thumbnail looks like Larry David

  • Maybe if we get our reading, writing, and arithmetic down we can begin to make anything better. More people means more teachers, right? So what if we all innately understood exponential growth? The problem would still be there, to maintain 0% growth. That means you have two kids and die before you're a grandparent, doesn't it. The problem would still be there. This jerk is smart, but he's a baby boomer. You can't blame him for being so fatalistic.

  • He goes on to talk about what is and isn't sufficient. Some people say we should evolve into sexless androgynous beings of pure intellect. That sounds boring as hell. If you want to depopulate, help yourself. Just remember you have to start with you. Arithmetic is not the only logic there is, Turtlepower? TMT? It's all good. The bathroom rule is nice and funny, but the bedroom rule is the one that matters. You really think it's going to get that crowded? The bedroom rule balances the rates. def

  • @zssamgh The movie Idiocracy = foreshadowing.

  • @zssamgh not sure what you mean, Turltepower? TMNT? TMT are my initials : ) LOL. Thank you for making me smile. But hey if I can have turtle powers I will take them, haha.

  • Wow, I think my priorities in life are changing

    :(

  • The human dignity is inversely proportional to the number of human beings! - The Bathroom example.

One of the best videos I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing! The video is rightly titled.

  • Ahhh FUCK!

  • This is awesome simple infallible math! Thank you for sharing this. Thank you Dr Barlett for explaining how the source of the problem is people thinking they are creating solutions when in fact they hide the truth and usurp resources while pretending to be advocates of sustainability. Thanks and blessings to those who truly are searching for real answers to this problem.

  • @TMT462 If you have a moment another interesting video is called "The Code" by Carl Munck, interesting analysis of the locations of many ancient structures, pretty cool to me. I am not a math wizard at all but if you consider that religions spanned the globe with similar creation stories than why couldn't the ancients have shared their technology & mathematically arranged megalithic structures all over this world.

  • @TMT462 I guess the only connection to this video is the fact that Math assists & regulates many facets of our lives.

  • @TMT462 thanks tmt gonna look this up, this sounds similar to bruce cathies work if your familliar with it,, the harmonic conquest of space,, im like you no math wizard, i wish this guy had been my teacher...

  • the crazy thing is 3 million people watched the first part,, two hundred thousand watched the part 4 and 500,000 watched part 8, that tells you,, if we assumed that 300,000 skipped the middle just to watch the end,... that tells you an estimate that only one in fifteen people are actually bothered,, this is such an important thing too,, that if we dont take notice, we will be done for,, all of us

  • @wit113 I would imagine that it has something to do with the fact that only 1 in 15 people isn't an idiot.

  • @wit113 we're already done for

  • @wit113 since i dont have an hour and a half to waste watching a video, could you please do a recap of what he said?

    thanks in advance

  • @zenoparodie yep, zeno, what hes done is taken some issues, population growth, oil usage, oil left for example. with population growth as reported in statistics as an average of 7 % inflation and worked out in maths what this means, that it doubles in ten years, done the same thing with oil how usage is going up while the oil is running low,. i guess we all knew this, but to see it worked out in such a way is a little worrrying, he takes no prisoners and tells it as it is

  • @wit113 this is such a basic review zeno,, i aint doing it justice,. but it is well worth watching even if its just one part at a time,, i think if this guy taught us all at school we wouldnt be in such a mess,,.. hope this helps a little,,

  • @wit113 Because there is simply too much talking. We live in the age of information overload and most of what is out there isn't even very good information. Keeping things simple, to the point and stop brow-beating people with doomsday crap and politicized nonsense would be a good start. The problem with academics is that they spend too much time thinking and talking when everyone else has to do stuff to get on with it.

  • @bannol1 information overload ? i see whats going on around me with my own eyes, i agree with you that there is too much talking not enough action,i imagine existence on earth to be like scales, how far have we come to tippin these scales, where do you think we sit , i feel like we are teatering on the edge, where its about to tip, things are suffering, natures suffering, am i wrong to say this, im no doomsdayer, i have two kids and there is nothing more id like than for us to find

  • @wit113 a perfect balance, i dont feel like we are living in harmony with whats around us, considering how important the enviroment is to everything, i still dont see my kids being taught how to look after it,, its still the same, based on grades, rush rush rush, without a minute to spare about resources or consequence, i feel schools would be more concerned about how you spell enviromental concerns, rather than for us to know ,, what it means,, anyway i hope im wrong

  • @wit113 we are screwed:P well at least those who ignore, prepare

  • @wit113 They probably stopped watching because they realised that the information presented here actually isn't very important. At least not in the sense that Albert is implying.

  • "the nature of the human species to reject what is true but unpleasant and embrace what is obviously false but comforting." - H.L. Mencken

  • @wit113 I agree, either we demand change or the elite will carry it out their way. We don't want what they have planned.

  • Thanks for sharing this

  • Reminiscent of the conclusions of the Club of Rome publication: The Limits of Growth. Ties into the ideas naturally falling from the concept of an expanding globe and that of abiotic oil. Apart from abstinence, it seems his conclusion can only be inferred that we must limit our own growth and limit family size along with recycling extant resources. Even a brand new energy source or 'zero-point' extraction wouldn't obviate our need to restrain growth. Homeostasis is a key term.

  • This brings us to the outer limits of morality. If there is an external reality, a spiritual precedent for ethical law and indeed an eternal and post existence of man, than the dignity of individual human life would be predicated upon that law, in spite of seemingly impossibly material problems. Contrariwise, if there is no external spiritual reality and all existence is solely materialistic, morality's relativity become apparent and what it right is merely cold utility.

  • Think I’ve pissed a few people off on here, sorry guys I really didn’t mean to. Think I’ll stick to maths.

  • Man I slept 6 parts. Hey, it was 3.5 m viewers in the beginning and now 0.5. Amazing.:D

  • I am not an advocate of increased population, but he posed a question: Will anything get better in the long term from increasing population? Yes, knowledge.

  • Clear, informative, thought provoking! This could be a very useful education tool - for so many people.

  • More energy is not a solution to over population. Education and accepting responsibility for the resources and space we consume is. People popping kids out left right and all over, without thought of consequence for even their child's future in an unsustainable world. It's ignorance. Wasting the energy we have and thinking that what it takes for us to live with luxuries comes from an infinite tap of hopes and dreams. It's ignorance.

  • So what! All we need to do is find away to rapidly decrease the population. But before that start we need to gather as much money/recourse as we can, repress technology that could solve some of the problems and trap people in a way of life that will lead them to ignorance. Now let everyone else die.

  • Remarkable in its clarity and insight.

  • It's been a decade since this video...

  • The best solution is renewable energy such as sun and wind. it is free and harmless to the environment. then why we use the oil. because oil companies want our money. then why the government don't support the renewable energy stuff such as solar panels. because government rulers are not more different than the oil company owners, they rule the united states! sad but true.

  • @paintlaca I hate to correct you but even if we could build enough solar and wind power solution for all our energy not just electrcal and cut our usage by 50%, then you would be the slave of the people who own the windmills.

When we made Carbon our slave we started to act like humans, take that away make people’s lives hard again and well what horrors can we think up.

  • @wispa2 if solar and wind energy may not be enough, it is possible to separate hydrogen and oxygen from water and use the hydrogen as a natural gas. there are many project about this but we have to wait until no oil left. in worst scenario we can use the nuclear energy to produce electricity and start to use electric cars. also all the roofs of houses and cars may be solar panel! "solutions never end in democracies."

  • @paintlaca Yeah because we can just magically create the resources needed to create THOSE things out of thin air, right? We're already getting close to running out of the fuel for some nuclear reactors, and solar panels don't exactly grow on trees either.

  • @MrCattlehunter look up LFTR uses thorium in a liquid form. I used to be anti-nuclear.

oh and solar panels that grow on trees are called leaves and in power stations they call them bio-mass.

  • @wispa2 Thorium is also a limited resource; but call me back when you get trees to produce electricity for you without the need to farm them, chop them down, transport them around, and then process them, without using fossil fuels to do any of that, and doing it in such a way that it actually makes sense from a practicality and efficiency standpoint (time investment, space used, etc), not merely as a hypothetical - in a way that produces enough energy to take it seriously.

  • @MrCattlehunter ok I agree bio mass is not the answer to all our problems, although it does work very well and without the need for oil in some places. Thorium is a finite resource but enough to provide the world’s population with energy at the same rate as the average US citizen for at least 1000 years. We already have maps of where it is on the moon and mars. This is one of the answers. assuming we can halt western exponential growth.

  • @paintlaca you can use the sun to make gasoline from air. It’s just we use a staggering amount of energy and there is a environmental cost the manufacturing rentables on mass. But your right we should use lots of different way to get our energy (oh and just read about a battery that you pee in to charge it up:-) just one more way.) So no argument from me, but it assumes that we have a true democracy, with an informed electorate. And I’m not sure what we have anymore!

  • Did he figure this out at the start of his academic career or wait until he was old and had his life to reveal it? The problem I have is that those who put money behind the less than ethical solutions are generally mega rich evil old farts who consume much much more than ordinary individuals of the earths limited resources. While using advanced medicine to prolong their life span. They don't want to die and many of us don't want ppl like that being the genetic pool of the future of humanity.

  • @sonyfier Now isn't that prejudice? It's actually quite sad you even dare utter those words after watching this one hour long series. The facts presented in this series is more than enough for people to get a HINT of what the hell is actually going on in this pitiful world we're currently creating. The majority blindly believes in what politicans say and propose in all its glory. It's a shame they can't see through their disgusting lies. Although this is just history repeating itself.

  • Indeed one of the most important presentations I’ve seen in forty two years on earth (at a steady rate of 1.5kg per year). Not sure where the professor stands on (final) solutions, but I hope we come up with more universally acceptable courses of action than the likes of Fatboy Churchill, one of the greatest mass murderers of recent history.

  • His students make me lol

  • SOYLENT GREEN IS A SERIOUS REALITY AND IT'S COMING TO YOUR LIFE SOON !

  • Zero growth economy, a true economy is the only way to go. Economy meaning preservation of resources. One such model is advocated by The Venus Project. If you don't know of it already, check it out. (Best introduction of TVP is at current, I believe the films "Zeitgest - moving forward" and "Zeitgeist - Addendum") There are some good pieces here on youtube too! Go see if you haven't already.

  • Although the simple mathematical facts presented would lead the unexpected listener to the pre-desired, but hidden agenda, whether the speaker is aware or just a pawn in a more complex game of control and disception. When one has TRUTH they see right through the lies and disception. The problem is NOT related to the number of humans on the earth. Man is not supposed to live, packed into cities, but as God describes in Genesis. WHY no mention of God, our creator, if you want the TRUTH....seek!!!

  • Fascinating, thought provoking, scary. Thanks to all who got us here, despite that atrocious title.

  • Going back to the bit about the causes of world population increase and decrease he is right we will turn to that right hand collum, meaning we will choose WAR

  • Every year cars are becoming more fuel efficient. It would be interesting to see how little effect that increasing fuel efficiency is actually having on the exponential increase of oil demand.

  • @doug65536 in the last twenty five years roughly , they have said that ! every year of my 32 years all i know is more horse power and the milage hasn't been much different except for micro cars . bigger trucks and suvs etc .

  • @doug65536 Wont matter how fuel efficient cars are if there is no fuel to power them. Fuel efficient technology will maybe delay the inevitable like you seem to agree by very little. Green energy is the only option and the sooner developed nations begin taking that seriously the better chance we have of living comfortably into the future, considering we also check population growth and can live in peace with the rest of the world.

  • @doug65536 Yes, considering the exponential growth of the number of cars it is likely to have little effect. One more interesting thing though is that studies show that if you get a fuel efficient car, you are likely to increase the use of it. Either for the reason that it is cheaper/distance or because you tell yourself it is not as bad for the environment as the last car you had.

  • Here is what people are not getting; regardless of what you believing, he has highlighted a REAL problem. It's very likely that we'll find solutions.

The problem is that those who stand back, and wonder what's happening think the solutions will come out of thin air.

So... when the problem is solved they may not even realize it existed in the first place.

  • Oh I agree, we are definitely heading into a crisis of constraint. I am however optimistic that we will stabilize population growth by 2050 by the following means:

    - Urbanization (city dwellers have fewer children)

    - Educating girls, and generally increasing literacy world wide (literate people consist a greater fraction of the population than ever before)

    - Womens rights, actually that is lame. goddess worship. Men must learn to see women as goddesses.

  • So yeah excuse me while I just go start a farm and stop depending on our absurd economy for my own survival and start depending on myself.

  • @aoeu256

The calculation is based on GDP approximating the levels of resource consumption. I agree GDP is not a precise measure, not in that is over estimates resource consumption, but that it under estimates it.

GDP is a measure of the products and services of an economy, and so yes, you are correct in that music and software is included. However, GDP does not account for waste (unless it is managed by a business) - which includes solids, liquids, and gases, NOT resonance and code.

  • @npyasi

I never argued that GDP is not proportional to resource consumption. What I argued is that amount of resource consumption per unit of GDP is decreasing, thus a high GDP in an virtual reality/ information world implies less resource consumption than if that same amount of GDP were in the 1950s.

  • If you let the free market work it will handle these problems. It always does

  • so wait... what can we do about this problem then?

i'm now aware of how serious the problem is but what do i do??

  • @LOLittleHero

Ask the teachers to put their lectures online so you don't have to waste gas going to them...

    Eat less meat...

Don't buy anything that you would regret buying later...

    Turn off your A/C

Reduce the number of times you go to the store to buy stuff, and maybe try buying in bulk with proper storage

    Learn time/money efficient cooking/fermenting/gardening

Find work close to home or take mass transit

    google "saving energy" "saving money"

  • Thanks for the presentation!

  • If I were experiencing a lack of pyramids I would imagine a larger local slave population would be of benefit.

  • Absolutely fantastic! This has to be one of the most well thought out, cited and delivered presentations I have ever viewed, on any subject. I wish all of my professors could of had this level of thoughtfulness and cadence in their presentations and lectures. It is truly unfortunate there are not enough people in the world, like Dr Bartlett, that can take simple concepts and apply them to complex phenomena to provoke thought in others and/or themselves. The world would be much better off!

  • efficency

    Steam Turbine 38%

Gas Turbine 23% → 77% lost at very high temperature

Diesel Engine 41% → Diesel is more efficient than petrol

Photovoltaic (solar) 10% → Physics tells us that the best that can be achieved 50%

    Wind Turbines

in other words no solar or any other renewable energy has not be found to replace oil. So there wil be wars, perhaps research wer r oil reserves, wots important is u remeber y ur country is killin oil rich under developed muslim nations

  • @ brettonlind Electricity Prices – through different supply routes Approximate baseline figures and show the cost to make (not sell) Wind 5 p/kWh Landfill Gas 4 p/kWh Waste Mass burn 4 p/kWh Biofuels 9 p/kWh Hydro (small scale) 5 p/kwh Photo Voltaic 40 p/kWh Fossil Fuels 3 p/kWh
  • Thank you for sharing the facts . . . there are other facts that prove that the same intellect we use to understand the problem can be used to SOLVE the problems without reducing the population of that "intellectual reservoir" - EDUCATION about the problem and laser focus on new energy sources that have more nearly INFINITE capacity (i.e. solar) is the key to the problem., not LIMITING the opportunity for other beings to populate this special place. Life is more precious than luxury!

  • @brettonlind, Education does not change the laws of thermodynamics, supply and demand, or exponential growth curves. Even the discovery of inexpensive fusion would not allow for unlimited growth.

And you clearly missed the part where life becomes valueless with overpopulation - a case that is made all to clearly around the world today in heavily overpopulated areas where social abuse and violence between crowded, fragmented societies becomes endemic, and children are used as soldiers.

  • @Vastin

You assume we will always live the same way forever, but tech can change our life so we can completely avoid the issue of thermodynamics. The laws of physics mean little to someone teleporting around in virtual reality. For a pre-electric society where mail is carried by horses, its true that you can't make faster horses to deliver at the same speed to an expanding population. The issue is why keep using horses, why not invent email... oh yeah you need inventors(people) for that.

  • U ignorant bastardz need 2 fukin educate urselves. N fynd out the real reasons 4 ur fukin wars. Where ur fukin killin innocent pipl. Foooookin dumb shits. May god put a curse on ur greed n ur fukin ignorance

  • there is no solution 2 the energy crisis. Research the fukin facts. I've read sum comments n it shokin how thik pipl r wot this guy has sed Is fukin basic knowledge any1 with 2 brain cells kud work out. Let me tel u alternativ energy e.g. renewabl wind solar etc ther is no solution 2 the energi crisis. Pipl if u haven't workt it out ther r guna b alot of wars

  • Anthropogenic means humans r the cause of it. U americans r killin the muslims 4 oil, but u don't undastand how long its avail 4. Research where r all the major oil reservz? they r unda muslim countriz thats y u kill muslimz. The media make u beliv muzlimz r bad same media propaganda on jews by nazis. Do u know who owns the media? who owns most ov the FTSE companies federal reserve a privatli?owned bank. Av u heard ov RFID?

  • Now do u undastand y afta kenedys report to GAO that stated the greatest threat to amerika wuz ovapopulashun n a couple yrs later ther wuz aidz in africa rise by 47%? Duz it make more sense y 911 was an inside job? Watch "loose change" and "the obama deception" Do u know about the oil pipeline america wantd beneath afganistan? What this guy got wrong was there is no such thing anthropogenic climate change its bullshit

  • Old prick should make a suicide,.. Does it not take like 2.4 children per couple just to maintain population in most western nations? It is not like people stopped dying and we are on the verge of the biggest sovereign debt crisis the world has ever seen,..

  • ~ and it follows that we need 48 planet earths by the end of the century... let's talk about pulling planets not suns.

  • ~ Making the assumption that GDP is an approximate measure of resource consumption (though I don't know if this accounts for waste assimilation) @ 3.69% GDP average growth over the past 10 years, which divided into 70 would amount to about 19 years for the world economy to double, or in other words, resource consumption (currently @ 1.5 planet earths worth) to scale to 3 planet earths by 2029, and 6 planet earths by 2048,

  • @npyasi

GDP isn't a measure of resource consumption its a measure of transactions. The more software & music you buy the less GDP is a good predictor of resource consumption since these are not hard "objects". What you are describing is our transition to an information economy. Also what about the billions of stars in the milky way, each having about 5-10 planets?

  • Socialism isn't helping the situation. Intelligent people who work and try to do the right thing are having less kids, while idiots keep breeding and raising their large families on welfare. I think we are already seeing the signs that socialism is failing all over the world. It's time to start promoting Nationalism and people looking out for their own countries, populations, and families instead of this unrealistic, "everyone is entitled to a piece of the pie" bullshit. Natural section

  • @Populist1488 The notion to segment people and culture will have as consequence that any means of global awareness of such problems will be dinished by a factor as large as the number of nations involved. If any result was to be a natural default results it would be indifference , ignorance , petty distinctions and war. None of which have any place in this discussion. If we could speak of ourselves as humans rather then nations we could start a discussion on helping us (No pun intended on U.S.)

  • this sucks, alberts calculations are inevitable.

its true that what goes up must come down.this only leaves questions for me.

  • @aoeu256 your not making sense, your just saying the solution to the problem is to add MORE to the problem.starvation still proceeds even in this country today.but food shortage isnt the problem, its to many plates to fill.think about it too, more technology=more resources being used to make that technology, wich just results in being more resources used.the answer is in plain sight-to cut off growth.but even that has its faults

  • @JacklyneB

Starvation is caused by distribution problems...

Just because we lose some of our current culture doesn't mean we won't be happier as long as we gain new horizons.

    The following save oil:

Mass transit, video conferencing, 3D printers, virtual reality, remote control robots, alternate energy, cultured foods, genetic engineeing in general, consumer "auto-farming", more efficient engines, temperature control, processes, space, "3D" city layout. The list is not exhaustive btw.

  • Albert Bartlett has more students from the Internet that watch him then he ever saw IRL

  • Too pessimistic on technology. Do you know how much technology we have now that we didn't have in the 1950s? Oil is not needed for anything, it just is the cheapest source of fuel. However, when oil is more scarce then its price increases. Will our life be different in the future, yes? However, overall we will be better off. There are a million ways of solving the oil problem that aren't solved because we don't have enough people to research them.

    More population = More technology

  • @aoeu256 dude, sorry but your kinda stupid, acquire some knowledge for a few years then maybe you would be able to say something correctly,or at least understand how the world works

  • @drinkbudyXD

Oil is just one resource. Back in the day Malthus predicted mass starvation of people by now. However, food technology improved and now we make more food per person even with less land. The more people you have the more researchers you have. New technology is the reason our standard of living has improved even with fewer natural resources. If the average human being gives us more value in technology than they use in natural resources then we should have more children/immigrants

  • @aoeu256 dude, read a book or google or something involving research. If there r a million ways of solving the oil problem, name one. Or do u believe that we've just gotta wait for the birth of "the energy crisis messiah", who will solve our resource/population/pollution problems with an app on his iphone. Wake up, man!

More population=more technology=more consumption=less resources=more pollution=lower standard of living=hell on earth...how can humans breeding like rabbits fix this situation??

  • @aoeu256, you should bear in mind that regardless of our energy sources, much of our fertilizer is petrochemical - oil-based. Even if we were able to replace 100% of our power and fuel needs with solar/fusion/nuclear, our food production will still drop considerably once oil runs out - and the energy costs of synthesizing fertilizers will likely be enormous. No matter what solutions we come up with, continuous population growth will beat them.

Far easier to find a pop cap and live with it.

  • @Vastin

Solar & fusion are NOW more expensive, but only b/c current tech watch Michio Kaku on youtube. Tech reduces oil in other areas like replacing lectures with adv video conferencing increases the oil available for food. Most of our food is used to make meat, so if you could culture soybeans/rice directly into meat (cooler if we could do it in our homes) would save lots. 3D printers that could print food, circuits, and stuff could reduce our need to travel so can good augmented reality.

  • World population 7 billion Nov 2011

  • he has the mental fortitude to see through the hogwash that is spouted by so called experts and calls a spade by it's name.

a brilliant mind -what this world needs today more than ever.

  • @harryTization /watch?v=BOoBTufkEog

Mr Bartlett is the one who doesn't understand arithmetic. Energy consumption & prosperity contribute to stabilizing/decreasing population. He needs to stop brainwashing people.

  • @harryTization

He misinterpreted the quote that went like "when we run out of suns... we'll find new suns". The problem with technology is that while its true you can't bet for any specific technology, there are thousands of possible ways to reduce oil and land use and just because I can't list them all doesn't mean they don't exist. [Give me some time and I can list 40, and NO they are not the only 40]. Look how much tech we have now that we didn't have in the 50s, and thats in 2050.

  • @aoeu256 Technology is great, no arguments there, i love my monster pc & widescreen hd monitor, but i think yr missing something. As great as tech is, its extremely wasteful. Think of all the pcs, mobile phones etc that get thrown out every year. Those throw away gadgets r made of plastics or metal alloys. The raw materials required to make most plastics r petroleum based. Metals we know, r mined. So before u even turn on yr pc, phone, etc. U r already consuming resources & most arent recyclable

  • That was an immensely bad ass lecture.

  • Interesting that he mentioned tobacco.

We should have commercials encouraging smoking :)

  • The title of this video is terrible. It is like to videos that use similar wording to attract attention when the content is something odd or whacky or disgusting. CHANGE THE TITLE OF THIS VIDEO! Suggestion: "Growth Rates Will Ruin the World".

  • @SailingMonsoon You are wrong. This was the most important video I have ever seen.

  • @SailingMonsoon not true, scientific videos of this sort are MUCH LESS viewed with unattractive titles

a video with that title wouldn't get 500k views

the fact that this video received this much attention is proof

  • It's funny how the Catholic Church's position in the last 50 years has changed to promote population decline. Now, the advocation of birth control, contraceptives, abortion are no longer immoral and homosexuality is slowly being accepted... all things which lead to population decline.

  • We should have a resource base economy system & political parties based on science..

  • Yes, I have any problem that gets better: Any problem where population is lower than the ideal balance! Conclusion: Less population is JUST AS BAD as more population IF (yes, IF) it means deviating from the ideal. But this is not a problem. Since nature balances this out by itself. In fact it’s physically impossible not to balance itself out if it’s overpopulation. And it’s practical nonsense to think a population would not grow if below the ideal.

  • The problem is that “stopping the population growth” is very very simply just an euphemism for mass murder on a massive global scale. And everyone thinks “And you want ME to be the victim, yes? So you and your kids can live on happily? Fuck you, I’m stopping YOUR population growth!” ^^

So the wise (Not “smart”. WISE) question to ask is: What do we, if we don’t want to bash our heads in in a couple of decades, do?

Any suggestions? Cause I’m already sharpening the nails on my club. ^^

  • @Evi1M4chine I think you are right. What this professor is teaching is very similar to what I think is naturally occurring though. I don't think it needs to be mass murder but I think we, ourselves, will be the authors of our own demise. Poverty kills - and it's bound to happen to the USA soon (and probably even Canada). If and when the government defaults there will be social unrest leading to many deaths. Global warming, peak oil, shortages in medications... will all lead to pop. decline.

  • @Evi1M4chine Yes we know the answer. 3 things have been shown to have a high correlation with population decline and are humane: Availability of family planning and contraception. Education of women. Empowerment (Equality) of women.

His question was "name a problem that gets better with population growth". "Population Decline" is not an answer because it contradicts the scenario described in the question.

  • @PastafarianMinister first up, all hail the flying spaghetti monster, may he always hold u in his noodly appendage... its a tough question, for sure, there's a few things i can think of improving as the population increases 1) our awareness of the importance of sustainability (possibly too late)..2) Our understanding that death isn't such a bad thing, so we should stop trying to live to 150, just let it go! and 3) Our appreciation of personal space and untouched wilderness would go thru he roof!

  • @eleptheria1 if anything then more people would require a higher need for education which was CLEARLY on the left side of the list for good reasons, not to mention that your statement on longevity consequently destroys the long term investment made in and by the people. you would have to guard that investement instead where it has the highest payback. I doubt that any truly effective means have been stated here by you but I would love to see myself proven wrong on this.

  • @Evi1M4chine

Stop the catholics who teach that condoms and contraception to 3rd world countries. Fight more for women's rights in the 3rd world. However, I think he underestimates technological growth driven by population increase here. How come even though we have fewer natural resources in total now than we did in the 1900s, our avg std of living is higher? Don't you think oil need is driven by our current technology limits?
